Halo 3: ODST and Halo: Reach

I like the sound of that. But you never know with Bungie.

Wouldn't they have to rewrite the history though? My knowledge of Halo lore is very limited, but I don't think the Flood arrived on Earth until the prophet's ship crash landed on Earth during Halo 3. And Reach, no mention of Flood there during the events of those books.... (are there...?)

Maybe they'll find something else to take their place.... space zombies!

By design :D

You say it as if it's a good thing.
Install? Achievements?
Obviously there's the use of assets from ODST itself, that I know.
I'm not saying that they don't have a reason for it, but from a consumer stand point I'm just pointing out my own lazyness.

FYI: Flood ftw >_>. {Quiet about Cortana, yes it's poor, and yes the "blow up the power columns" was lame}

Damn, I forgot about those three-way battle moments. They certainly gave an epic feel to Halo 1 and Halo 2's campaigns; I felt more immersed in the game world during those sections of gameplay. It would be awesome to see more of that in ODST. :D

Imagine roaming around the hub near an infection outbreak. The covenant is holding out in various locations while the flood roam the streets. The squad of ODST taking advantage of the chaos to get shit done. I don't care if it's the flood or something else; I just want CE-esque three-somes.
One of my favorite parts of CE!

Story reason: the Elites aren't bad guys during Halo 2 and 3.

Which is why I can't fucking wait for Halo: Reach. A prequel means the Elites are enemies again. :D And hopefully no Brutes or Flood.
You still fight the Elites as Master Chief for a while through the campaign on Halo 2.

As for which enemy is more "fun" to fight... Brutes got the most advanced AI technology in Halo 3, so that's an easy pinup. But comparing figures in Halo 2, it's obviously the Elites. They're a much bigger challenge because of their sneaking ability, as well as going cloak (think of Halo 1 and the level Truth & Reconciliation; as soon as you and your Marines make your way up to the Covenant ship... gladly to be met by 6-7 cloaked Elites with plasma swords).

In Halo: Reach, they'll be the main focus on the Covenant combat warriors. Can't wait to see how they are in these events.

Why is it that every Halo product will only focus on New Mombassa when showing Earth (including the comics and novels). Why can't we get a game with a full scale invasion involving AMERICA?? or even europe/asia?

The graphics would look cooler too. New Mombassa is just abunch of orangeshit and gray corridors.

I am sure it has been discussed in here but I just want to give everyone a high-five about the new pistol appearing to be an instant shot instead of a spread like the BR. :D

Hell yeah, Blim, you the man.

Fireflight mode looks like chaotic fun. I love how everything gets dropped off by phantoms, makes it feel much more genuine.

Haha, I knew the fanboys would go up in flames with my post. Didn't miss on both the French and US sites. I stand by it though, I'll just add a "imho" in the news.

And it's accurate. I think ODST looks better than Halo 3 from what's be seen so far, but the engine is definately showing its age, especially in image quality.

There will be flood in ODST.

Reach? Maybe
How will the Flood be in ODST? That wouldn't fit with the timeline. The first time the Flood were on Earth is when they crash-landed piloting that Covenant ship during Halo 3.

I'm definitely a Halo fanboy ;) However, I've always tried to be really objective about Halo, particularly Halo 3, with regards to everything including graphics. The degree of aliasing is atrocious, but unless you're playing on levels with a multitude of horizontal or vertical lines, the game is gorgeous (see Cortana, most of Sierra 117, the Ark, etc).

I have yet to see a console game's lighting engine impress me as much as Halo 3's, and similar to the graphics of an open-world game, when you start to think about the things you can do with this engine (that other engines can't or won't let you do), Halo 3 stands pretty tall.

But yeah, great video. ;)

i am a huge halo fan and i agree with you. i think they could (and should) do much more with the h3 engine.

I'm still impressed by the lighting and more importantly the scope of the battles this engine puts out. Very few engines could have two phantoms swoop in, drop off two huge vehicles and a plethora of enemies and allow the player to experience that with a bud in split screen.

Graphics are nice for the first few hours but that's never why you keep playing. It's all about the gameplay and aspects that facilitate gameplay like rendering huge play arenas with a ton of enemies on screen.

I agree with your assessment, pls let Reach be on new engine.

Its a good thing websites can't be burnt down by a rabble of angry villagers ;)

No doubt it is looking its age, but 100,000s of people still play the game so I don't think its going to cause too many problems amongst the wider gaming community. I just hope that Bungie don't use the same engine for Reach (unless this time they drop dual framebuffers and put the extra bandwidth towards 720p/AA)

Moreover you can pause and fly around in these environments without a hitch, even take a video if you'd like. A fully maxed out OMG_KILLZONE2 engine would not facilitate these features on a console. Yet.

Yeah, I figure recording everything on the fly is pretty resource intensive, that's why all other developers don't do it. But now that I've tasted the glory of such features I can't let em go. I'd much rather have Reach be a 640p jag-fest then a game without saved-films and such.

Hah! Co-op of course, though I was only with one other person. No way I'm doing that in single player :lol

The Library, on the other hand, was pure hell. Pure hell.

The Library is way better than Cortana.
No possible way. The Library is where good level design goes to die a painful, horrific death. The layout is repetitive, confusing, and you fight Flood that pour out in multiple waves from the same hell-tubes. No other level in the entire series can possibly be as bad as it, it's far and away the worst element of any of the games.

We've had this discussion before, if I recall correctly. I disagree.

You could say the engine is simultaneously showing its age, as well as its strengths, over time. The scale and lighting continue to impress me in Halo 3, and that looks to be leveraged well in ODST.

I was lumping that under "scale".

And for the love of all that is holy, don't regress the thread into a debate about The Library. We just got over the AR/BR runs.

I never even thought of that.... no Flood in ODST or Reach! :D :D :D

I'm in the (admittedly tiny) camp of people who don't mind fighting the flood for a change of pace. However, even I get annoyed when the Flood take center stage for overly long levels of multiple stages.

Dax01 said:

We have. The reason you probably tolerate it is because of the quality levels that surround it (343 Guilty Spark, Assault on The Control Room and on). The rest of the game is certainly worth the time taken to suffer through that hellhole, but damn is it still terrible.

Uprising did show Cleveland, but given how low the human population is at the end of Halo 3, there might not be much left of Earth outside of Kenya. It would be somewhat anti-climactic to have the game end by having a huge blob of plasma drop on top of the player.

I don't necessarily mind the Flood, myself.

When we fought them in Two Betrayals along with the Covenant, it was bliss because of the three-way battles. It helped there wasn't an over-flood (no pun!) of the Flood itself.

I could pass on heavy Flood levels like Cortana, The Library, etc.

I don't know . . . I think the engine is aging a little less like Barry Bonds and a little more like David Ortiz.

Still, gameplay still reigns supreme in the Halo series, and I'm sure that will be intact.

Yes!! I was thinking exactly the same thing. Everyone loves a good three-way, and Two Betrayals was a perfect example of the Flood done right.

Okay, I'm done talking Flood. How 'bout that firefight, eh?
