Halo 3: ODST and Halo: Reach

Protip: I just checked OT and I thought this thread would help those buying the ODST Soundtrack via Amazon. http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=372492

If you buy a DD game from Amazon, they give you $5 worth of MP3 download credit. But the link in that thread is of a DD game that's FREE on Amazon so when you download that, you get $5 worth of MP3 downloads for free. It'll help cut $5 off the ODST soundtrack.

that is such BULLSHIT if true. i'm sick of msft's cheap ass when it comes to cases.

FUCK!

Halo 2 Limited Collector's Edtion had that packaging. That's still one of my favorite game cases.

As long as they avoid the scratched disc drama from the Halo 3 release, I don't really care how they sit in the box

Halo 3 CE tin would be your ultimate nightmare then

i have it! it came with a lovely scratched essentials disc.

i've also got blue dragon, lost odyssey, and star ocean 4 and the disc stacking is just getting a wee bit annoying at this point :P

I'd say that's what they are specifically trying to avoid this time around.

(Though I am sad the LE is just a controller - I do enjoy the behind the scenes extras.)

David Ellis needs to turn his sensitivity down because he was flailing all over the place in those Mythic videos. I did enjoy that quickscope over the shoulder blain in that Longshore flag video though.

The Halo 3 LE videos were great... I wish ODST would ship with something similar to that.

Oh well, the controller is quite nice I suppose... It's just hard to validate buying the LE for just a controller; when I have about 10 wireless ones at home already.

Also, I am doing everything I can to avoid watching these new firefight videos... I had to skim past an entire page of posts to try and avoid being 'spoiled'.

Steel DVD case for the win. Along with a "making of." Those are always good.

Yeah, it's a pity there's no DVD content included but given the time line they were on it seems like a luxury they couldn't really afford.

You played Firefight! You're about as spoiled as they come! :lol

Also, picked up the second issue of Helljumpers today. A nice insight into the squad. Enjoyable read with some really gorgeous artwork. Pick it up folks!

Thanks for the heads up on this, I was wondering if this comic series was going to release in a more timely manner than the first one.

I suppose this is as good a time as any to discuss spoiler definitions and spoiler tags.

My personal definition is that anything released by Bungie does not constitute a spoiler. For instance, today's character reveal.

That's the standard I'll request be enforced with spoiler tags here and in the official thread. If your personal standard is more strict, tread carefully.

Weird. So if you want to play Halo 3 MP online, you could use either the original Halo 3 disc OR disc 2 of ODST?
Yep.

For fans of higher quality videos, we (1UP) were having some trouble with our content provider backend for a large chunk of the day. Fortunately that seems to be cleared up which means you can finally download the HD versions of the new Firefight gameplay clips.

You guys uploading full gameplay sessions (like what you did with the last three Halo 3 maps)?

I don't think you could ever have a 'full' game of FireFight seeing as though the waves don't end. Unless they put a time limit, but even then it's not full. :(

I just want something around seven minutes of continuous gameplay with not cuts and whatnot.

Haha thanks. Colbert is hilarious. I wish other books could make me laugh as much as "I Am America (And So Can You!)"

I'm not sure if you noticed, but I included the end screen for our Alpha Site play through which ran almost an hour on heroic difficulty. Not sure if I'll be able to post all of that. :)

Here's an clip that made me laugh at how dangerous even the easiest of enemies can be in Firefight.

Can you *begs* PLEASE try? At least ten minutes of it?

Edit - grenade was deadly awesome.

Looks like about six grenades go off simultaneously - in addition to a Hunter's FRG. :lol

Awesome, I was going to ask earlier but I figured I should wait.

Man, ye guys have all the fun without me (the portion of the videos I watched are great).
Good to see Ellis about :).

Not happy with the slaughter of the wonderful engineers.
Lighterthansome only wants to love!

I would have to say, Bungie gets some serious brownie points for the addition of the Engineer to the game. Ever since I saw the original design from Halo:CE, I've wanted to see them in combat. They were fun to read about in the books (Cole Protocol), and that led to some interesting questions on their back story, etc.

I'm interested to hear (if they put it into the game) exactly WHY the engineers are deployed by the covenant on the field now in New Mombasa, and not prior to this, nor anywhere in the encounters of the Master Chief? If anyone has any insight into this, I welcome it.

In Halo Wars, we were given a glimpse into their use in-game that was alluded to in all of the fiction, right, with the actual repairing on the fly of dilapidated machines and systems (i.e. health bar in Halo Wars). Given glimpses with upgrades such as "Harmonious digestion" and other upgrades, I'm interested to see if Bungie goes the same route with a green "BEAM" fixing systems, or if they actually show what the various arms of the engineer are capable of doing when fixing a system. Curious to hear how Bungie makes them sound as well.

Fictionally Chief has come across them before, just not during the games. I'm sure they could up with a reason, but I'm sure it has been a gameplay limitation until now.

I bet ONI knows why, and I bet it's the same reason the ODSTs were deployed on the ground.

I'll bet it's explained in the ODST story.

Ye think so? Seems a bit... un-necessary.
Although thinking about it a bit more, the Prophets would know they'd need the Engineers to help in excavating/activating any Forerunner artefacts(/portal to the ark... OF DOOOOOM).
So I see what ye mean.

Right I'm aware of that, I was more talking of the gameplay encounters. One fixed his fusion coil backpack if I recall correctly. (Botched the terms I know).

The existence of the engineers is obviously known, but why deploy them now? It may have to do with what the Covenant are looking for. Disparate troops, needing more effective troops who are spread thin, so it only makes sense to have field medics? Seems like such a trivial reason almost, but most plausible.

My thoughts:

A) Bungie knows that they need to add more variety to enemy encounters so they're fleshing out an enemy that they wanted to have in the game at an earlier point but couldn't for some reason.

B) Bungie will possibly patch in a story reason for the engineers as they really do tend to make up the Halo campaign story as they go along. From what I understand, Bungie begins level creation and gameplay work before they finalize or even flesh out the story. This is why both Halo 2 and 3 suffered in the story department.

It's easy to notice that this will be the most polished Halo release yet. For me that's the most impressive thing about ODST, well that and the fact that even these Firefight missions are very atmospheric. Which shouldn't be surprising because Bungie somehow ties everything into the fiction, even the MP maps. Firefight isn't just a simple botmatch. It's part of the fiction and it draws you in just as much as the campaign.

The detail in the environments and the extra layer of polish on the particle effects makes a world of a difference for me when it comes to visuals. I didn't know the Halo 3 engine could be used to produce something that looks this good.

I don't mind stacking for games like rpg's but ODST, where I am going to be bunny hopping between ODST and Halo 3 matchmaking often will get annoying, I have a spare 2 disc dvd box laying around I can swap with if required :P

I wouldn't worry about it to much.

I have the Oblivion/Bioshock bundle that has them stacked and the discs are perfect.

All this stat info got me thinking.. why doesn't the Halo 3 service record track assists? Halo 2 did.
