I like the SMG. I'll take it over the AR just about every time, especially when I have a BR for longer range combat. There's something really satisfying about that popcorn rattle followed by that meaty melee thud.

I don't and never have owned any flavour of xbox, but the bits of Halo I've played do nothing to distinguish it from any other FPS. Maybe it's because I'm not a fan of the genre that I don't see the nuances that make it "great".

Mario Galaxy is by far the best game I've played in a long long time.

Frankly, Halo bores me not because there's been dozens of Halos, but because the game is so generic I feel like I've played dozens of Halos.

I love PC RPGs. That's my favorite type of RPG. But to be honest, due to the power of my current PC, I have sort of put the current releases "out of mind" until I can upgrade. So I didn't follow Witcher closely as a result.

I'm not sure if our tastes always align, but your review highlights things I find important so that's a good way to gauge potential.

But the way your review reads, it may be time to upgrade for sure.

I took one look at Amazon's GOTY list, saw SMG on the top and stopped reading. How could they award that game GOTY when it doesn't even have MP? Pathetic.

This needs to start into a movement people. The universal praise bestowed upon Galaxy by GAF and all the Reggie moneyhatted sites is unbearable and I can't take it any more. Waaaaa!! Waa! :cry

I think you should play Halo more thoroughly before coming to a conclusion about Halo. The first Halo is still one of the best games of the last decade, Halo 2 and Halo 3? Not so much.

Aside from a few on that list, a lot of those titles potentially are GotY. Seriously, how can you argue against a lot of them? It simply comes down to what they personally enjoyed more, or had more of a taste for or any other mix of considerations. The fact is that even though Halo 3 isn't MY personal GotY, I really can't argue against it. Its an extremely polished game thats a blast to play. I've grown tired of the formula, but that isn't an excuse to bump it off to the side.

I just enjoy looking at a few opinions here and there. This is the only year in quite some time where I was just like...fuck it.

Because Halo 3 is a second rate been there done that continuation of a 6 year old game. Also COD4/TF2/MPC/BIOSHOCK all say LOLOLOLOLOLolOLO at Halo 3 Because.

I can think of about two dozen games that are better than Ace Combat 6. Top of the list isn't bad.

Seriously. The likely GOTYs from the enthusiast press are Mario, Bioshock, Halo 3, Rock Band, and Orange Box. And those are all covered here.

Unfortunately, most of the time it isn't in the least bit warranted. Sure, it may have been flawed, nobody is saying the game isn't, but the ultra-flaming of Halo 3 that is going on in here, many by people who haven't even touched the game, is utter bullshit.

Yes, I know that the melee can be a complete crapshoot at times, and yes, I do know some maps are, for lack of a better word, pretty bad, but I also know TGS 4 player co-op runs were probably some of the most memorable videogame experiences I have ever had. I do know that the SP had countless awesome moments, accompanied by an amazing score. Most of all, I do know that Halo 3 was a fun game.

While I don't necessarily agree with the list(trust me, I don't), I'm sick and tired of this "halo sux, lulz" bullcrap people are throwing around this place.

Except soldiers dont have generic crosshairs to shoot from, they can prime grenades, get into cover,and they dont heal.
Halo is about as real as Unreal Tournament.

No it was tripe because the game mostly consisted of bland level design and boring and tedious combat against the flood. The pacing was pretty bad too. First half was good then it turned to generic shit when they made you navigate corridors shooting endless zombies with out much variety in the events of the level.

The flood is about as annoying as the infinite spawning soldiers from COD4.

As for Halo 3. Its a much improved game but it doesn't deserve the #1 spot.

If you're going to rate the game by value then Orange box takes the cake.
Not only do you have a single player with great level design, pacing and variety, you also get a multiplayer with incredible balance and charm. Lets not forget about portal. The puzzles are so fresh and clever. Not only do you get the 3 new games but you also get future mods,maps, and free updates. That is way better than Forge.

SMG - Even without multiplayer, the single player more than makes up for it. It feels more fresh than halo 3.

COD4 - The multiplayer is more addictive game than. The overall combat mechanics and gun play is more visceral. Halo 3 has a better single player though.

Personality of the year isn't "Best person of the year".
 
Galaxy didn't get 10/10 from everybody who reviewed it, and it didn't get game of the year from TIME. None of the pissing and moaning on here will change that, so just do yourselves a favor and bow down to Master Chief. BOW DOWN

In any case, that was a pretty poor taste from TIME to choose Halo 3.
 
halo 3 was a boring, repetitive turd that i stopped playing the day i bought call of duty. nothing about halo 3 stood out to me except the "been there, done that" feel that was stamped over every single facet of the game, from the single player campaign that hasnt changed a bit in 3 games to the multiplayer that is still unbalanced, flawed and this time played on some of the crappiest maps ever. i stood in line at midnight for almost 2 hours for the game, i never thought it would be so average. imho it doesnt even belong anywhere on a top 10, let alone #1. hell it isnt even top 3 xbox 360 FPS of this year imho. call of duty 4, bioshock and orange box were all superior to me.

rest of the list looks decent, except ace combat being on it.

I agree. It is certainly a great game. But it is just too obvious and corporate of a choice. And other than four-player co-op (which is awesome), it didnt' bring much new.
 
I'm happy with the list, Halo 3 certainly isn't the best but I would much rather have Halo 3 than some game that is absolute garbage.
 
Personal opinions aside, it's very funny to see all these people claiming that Halo 3 is utter shite, which is patently not the case even if it's not to their personal tastes.

I really like the game and have been playing it fairly regularly since it came out, so I guess it is my GOTY, although I would hate to have to choose (at gunpoint, let's say) between Halo and the Orange Box, it'd be like choosing which testicle you'd like to have sawn off.
