Halo 4 development is complete + New Screens (Spoiler)

its always been the shitty character faces in Halo that stood out for me, glad to see they finally have good faces...certainly taken long enough :P

I'm put in the awkward position of having a Halo game be my most anticipated game of the year.... It looks really good.

I'm a bit ass backwards though when it comes to this series. I hated Halo and Halo 2, and loved 3.

How could you.. Hate.. Halo 2...

Lol.

I just loved the multiplayer. First Xbox live game I ever played. First online game ever actually. Holds a special place in my heart.

Nintendo and Sony fanatics find these threads quickly and spout lots of bullshit.

You're embarrassing yourselves, so please just knock it off.

Hype is through the roof on this one. Midnight.

Right. I bet you love Killzone and Uncharted though, right?

Has your top loading slim cover broke already, you miss the ungeneric Killzone?
Don't fight ignorance with ignorance guys.

He got called out enough, lets gets back to the real party.

Looks incredible. No, really and truly incredible.

Amazing to me that the series had to be pried from the hands of its creators before finally rising to its true potential. At least I hope that's the case. I've bought many Halo games and have been mostly disappointed with them. But I keep coming back, hoping that this is the time they finally get it right.

It looks like this time, they did, in spectacular fashion.

I've only played Reach and H3, but I have Anniversary and ODST.

I feel like playing through them in the lead up to Halo 4, hopefully in the right order. Can someone correct me if I'm wrong

Halo Reach -> CE/Anniversary -> Halo 2 (God knows where I'm going to find a copy) -> Halo 3 -> ODST

?

Yeah that's about right.

Edit: actually I forgot but odst takes place during halo 2 I think.

Well, ODST takes place during Halo 2.

Fuck that, Halo: CE has some of the best combat and emergent gameplay ever in a shooter.

The first game was perfect because the story was just there to give us all kinds of crazy experiences, but Bungie totally dropped the ball when they put their awful writing to the forefront in Halo 2 and onward. In CE, the gameplay was the focus, in the sequels, the story was.

Which sucks.
If Bungie was like that, Reach's storyline would have hewed as close to FoR as possible, but it made some pretty significance changes. I've never gotten the impression that Bungie put story before gameplay when hearing about their development processes.

Play them in order of release. You'll get more out of them that way. ODST and Reach are better if you have prior knowledge from the previous games.

CE->2->3->ODST->Reach

And you can find a copy of Halo 2 on eBay for pretty cheap.

I just loved the multiplayer. First Xbox live game I ever played. First online game ever actually. Holds a special place in my heart.

I didn't hate the MP, but even by 2004 standards, it was nothing amazing to someone who had playing online shooters for five years on the PC.

Halo 2's single-player meanwhile was objectively bad. Like, one of the worst I've ever played. It had the same shitty bottlenecked corrodor segments where every second area was a copy-paste job of the last, every single time they go to something interesting - they disappointed you. I'll never forget getting to that first scarab, seeing a rocket launcher and thinking "this is gonna be awesome", only to find out you had to jump on the thing and press a button to defeat it. The arbiter segments were brutal, there was less open environments, and then the flood. I don't know what they did, but they made shooting things unfun. I didn't know that was possible in a game with fairly tight control, but they pulled it off. No feedback at all. And then what little shit I gave about the story died when it ended on the stupidest goddamn anti-climax ever.

It was hard for me to not despise the game, especially as it was right around the same time that Metroid Prime 2 and Half-Life 2 came out - both completely superior, both completely overshadowed.

So it was really weird when I eventually decided to try Halo 3, a game I knew got shit on, and pretty much loved the SP. Flood was way better, vehicle segments were way better, more open environments and variety. I thought the game looked beautiful, and I loved the warthog escape ending. I even didn't mind the cryosleep, "maybe we'll be back" ending.

Yes, Reach was a great looking game for its time, and this one looks just incredible for 7 year old hardware. The visual jump from Halo 3 to Halo 4 has to be one of the biggest jumps a series has made on the same hardware. And I think Halo 3 looked pretty good overall, although there were definitely elements (humans and IQ being the most obvious) that looked subpar even in 2007.
Oh it's definitely a massive leap, no doubt about that. Seeing a 7-year-old console pull this off makes it certain that Durango will blow our minds away. I think what we're seeing here is a team that has taken complete advantage of what the Xenos has to offer.

hmm this will be my first Halo gentlemen. Do you think itll be accessible for me to get into?

Should be. I believe there'll be a story recap vid at the start of the game. I'd suggest being daring with the difficulty BTW - with previous Halo games, IMO a lot of the greatness is lost when you play them on Easy. Also, be sure to experiment with the weapons, some newbies don't realise what an overcharged plasma pistol can do for instance.

I own a PS3 not had a 360 since about 3 months after launch and found it ended up being an expensive and underused DVD player. But damn this looks good, could make me go out and purchase a machine just for this game.

Yes Killzone looks good on the PS3 but this is a totally different art style and it looks mightily impressive. Unless GG bring something like KZ4 to the PS3 then Sony don't have an answer to this game this generation I don't think.

Lol now that you mention it, I definitely agree on that Scarab part. Such a let down.

And I was completely surprised to by the character change to Arbiter. I didn't like that at all but I guess we all had to roll with it. Haha.

Screw the flood. Hated them in Halo 1, 2 and 3. Hate hate hate them. Always dreaded those levels whenever I would do a second play through.

Yeah I know, I´m probably the only person in the universe who plays Halo games for the campaign. Now that we have this out of the way - what can I expect storywise? Everything canon? Or new canon? Or...? Please fill me in guys!

It's all new canon.

I also love Halo for the campaign but I still enjoy multiplayer.

Ah, I see. Are there any new books on the horizon to go with the new story?

Glasslands and the upcoming Thursday War which are both part of a trilogy takes place after Halo 3 and bridges the gap between Halo 3 and 4.

Cryptum and Primordium focuses on the Forerunners. Silentium will release in Jaunary 2013 because it probably contains spoilers for Halo 4.

I have to say, having not followed coverage of Halo 4 at all, those screenshots remind me of Metroid Prime because of the whole visor thing they have going on.

No, didn't you hear? It looks exactly the same!

You know, his face is one thing but what bothers me the most is how his shirt and medals almost look cell shaded because of how bad they are.

Mm because it's way better than they did with the same tech?
To be fair to Bungie, Reach looked very good and this tech is now 2 years removed from that. Also this team is the best of the best, and has nearly unlimited resources.
