Halo 4 development is complete + New Screens (Spoiler)

Is it maybe some sort of lingering, left-over "top-dog-shooter-hate?" 'cause the most popular shooter, whatever it is, always gets a bunch of hate from one group or another, and Halo was top dog for a while.

I used to dimiss it as that, but sometimes it's coming from otherwise supportive Halo fans. Definitely weird to me.

Back on the subject about if 343 Industries redone anything on the engine.

"But we've also torn down the engine and rebuilt a lot of it, and certainly you've seen that in the image quality and the graphic rendering techniques we're using." - Frank O'Connor

"Sometimes you're going to have to completely throw out whole chunks of the engine. But yeah, there are always pieces you can keep. Some of that is just calculations and numbers that make his jump height feel right for example. That stuff you have to retain." - Frank O'Connor

With the exception of Halo 2, no, I really can't. Usually when pressed, it turns out they're holding it to PC standards, which isn't reasonable.

And you wonder why people think you're defensive.

Hint: It's an opinion. People have those. It's ridiculous to say anyone who doesn't have your opinion has an ax to grind.

Excuse me... when did I wonder why people think I'm defensive? Or claim not to be?

Yes, I'm defensive. I look at a game with my own two eyes and it looks fucking beautiful, and others say it looks like shit. I hate that!

HALO 3 is beautiful. Playing tonight again just because of it. Which level you recommend I should dive into?

HALO 4 is undeniably a swan song for this generation. Can not wait to play!!!!!

Well, to be honest, the snow is a letdown. It looks like a hard, solid flat surface that has no interaction. Too bad it didn't at least appear to have some more depth, even if they faked it.

In comparison, Halo 3 had some decent looking snow:

I mean, cuts are necessary so I understand, still its too bad the snow doesn't look a little better.

You can't be sure till we see more because in HALO 3 the snow didn't add those effects on all snowy surfaces. It was used in deep snow surfaces. With that one shot of HALO 4 you can't see if they add those effects till you run over deep snow. Will be fun exploring this game for sure. :)

Cheers! IMO the most breathtaking stuff is definitely in The Ark and Covenant. I also think Cortana is really overlooked in terms of sheer artful graphic design. So ugly yet so beautiful. (The level mind, not the naked blue chick.)

I'll be so happy to play a game that doesn't have just bullet firing aim down sight m16 mlg 420 ron paul weapons for once

I prefer bilinear sampling when downsizing. Bicubic looks a bit too blurry IMO.

But yeah that's a good point about snow... I'm sure there will be some sort of effects. Might only be when someone take a step. Perhaps those characters were standing still.

STALKER: Clear Sky uses it while reloading weapons, as well as during ADS.

One thing I'm having a hard time understanding is why people are so upset at the thought of Halo 4 actually being one of, if not the most technically impressive video game on consoles. Uncharted screenshots come out and people are like "oh my god, best graphics ever," even when it's pretty easy to nitpick various shortcomings, but Halo 4 does it and "NO THIS CLEARLY IS ALL BULLSHOTS AND LOOKS TERRIBLE!"

What gives? The 360 has a the best GPU and RAM setup of any current gen console. Of course it's going to do the most impressive stuff.

Yeah Crysis 2 uses DoF when you're viewing or modifying your weapon. I guess they can use it when reloading, but that never made sense to me.

Also, while I agree that there are people who will drool over one game and go out of their way to troll another, I don't think we should be making any claims of any game (or system) being the most technically impressive game. Both systems have their own strengths and weaknesses. Also every game makes trade offs, whether it's in the design of the game itself or the tech of the engine, and Halo 4 is no different.

Were you trying to use these quotes to support your assumption that the renderer has been entirely rewritten from scratch?

Might be the first accurate shot of this game I've seen.

I'm having a hard time figuring out if you're trolling or just blind. Those screens look horrible and the game looks nothing like that.

Halo 3 didn't look like shit, it just looked basic; in some ways that works but they could have used the power of the 360 to bring the basic shape visuals to life. Which Halo 4 looks to be doing; but we'll see - am sure there will be things one game does better and the other game does worse and vice versa. It is a same gen sequel after all from a different studio.

Well, it looked graphically average.

The art direction, lighting, physics and AI of H3 were sublime at the time.

However, the resolution, jaggies and character models were pretty disappointing, I agree.
