Halo 5 Guardians: #huntthetruth

It's more then choosing a side. From what I heard, Halo Lore is misunderstood and underated. I ordered the first 6 the novels and I can't wait to get into them.
I've read many of the novels and I really don't find anything created under the helm of 343 very interesting. I'm not into the expansion of the Forerunner fiction, the Kilo-Five stuff, the drama with The Storm / Val Whatshisname / the Arbiter... I dunno, I just find very little to like about the recent plot developments. It's not a huge deal -- I still enjoyed the Halo 4 campaign well enough, and I'm more of a multiplayer guy anyways. But it's just kind of a bummer. I've been hyped as hell for past Halo games, including their story. I'm not feeling that (yet) with Halo 5.

You're really coming off as unnecessarily defensive in this thread.

It's okay Kittens. I'll get you hype when the time comes for you to make a purchase you might regret.

The first six novels have 4 of the top five Halo stories. Fall of Reach, First Strike, Ghosts of Onyx and Contact Harvest are all solid.

So The Flood doesn't exist anymore? ;)

EDIT: I'm an idiot and need sleep.
Locke saves MC at the end of the game with help from Arbiter.

New enemy appears, super spartan halsey!

I can see it. Everyone is becoming a Spartan. Jul will probably be one, too.

God, this is so uninteresting to me. At this point it feels like I'm never going to care much about Halo lore again. :-\

My exact sentiment! I was a huge lore fan until 4. It really did kill everything for me :/ I still, and always will love the concept art. My jaw is always dropped when i see them. I have a huge collection. So thank you to all those artists out there, I search for it always. At least then i can forget about the current state of its story :(

I'm not trying to be rude, but if it's so uninteresting to you after it seems like you've tried to make yourself care again, why bother posting?

I couldn't care less about anything related to Bloodborne/Souls, so I just don't post there.

I'm responding to the latest media from the video game series I care most about. It just so happens I find the current focus uninteresting. When there's something more to my liking I'll be more positive. So far the multiplayer stuff is really awesome.

Probably because he's trying to find joy in something that once absorbed him.

I kinda feel the same way. Halo 5's plot seems to be the most interesting story they've done since Halo 2. I'm not big into the Forerunner's either, I had to force myself to finish Primordium, and while I liked the Traviss novels myself, they haven't touched the first wave of books (minus The Flood and The Cole Protocol). Getting into the Lore again is feeling like a chore now, but that's just me personally. Glad that there are others enjoying it, though.

I gotcha, I apologize for coming off as rude if I did.

Im sure this has been mentioned before;

but the preliminary marketing for this is so dumb. what kind of halo fan is not going to be on #teamchief?

The ARG lasts 12 weeks right? In the master chief trailer he is clearly asking his own statue 'was it worth it'. He has obviously done something really bad that he regrets and in the coming weeks maybe we'll hear more about it.

Anyone got any idea what the chances of there being playable Elites in this game!? Considering the H2:A dialogue between Locke and Arbiter, I think it safe to assume Elites will have a large focus.

Hoping them dinosaurs will be playable in H5. HUNT THE TRUTH ABOUT PLAYABLE ELITES!

I really like Locke so far, and his trailer only cemented the kind of role he's going to have. The dude's got a great voice. Of course Chief is the king supreme, but I think Colter has done a fine job as Locke so far.

Very unlikely. Game will focus on Master Chief and Locke. The conflict of the Elites will definitely be presence as you will most likely explore their home planet, but you won't play one, you will fight along them tho.

I'd say the chances are just as good as they are bad, since we have no information on that either way. The Sanghelli are going to be a big part of Halo 5, so it's possible, but with Locke and Chief as playable characters already, I'm not sure if they'd add a third.

But I definitely wouldn't complain

I doubt that. And there is IMO no need for that.

A dialogue in a cutscene is not a indication for playable characters lol

I'm not.

Mainly because I would love to see what 343 would do in Halo 6 if they decide to kill off Chief in 5.

It would result in massive outrage and anger from everyone, but I think it would also allow them to shed a lot of baggage with the series and begin to force Halo into new territory and experiment with new gameplay ideas that fans would have revolted against, or wouldn't have fitted with the current vision of what Chief is capable of.

Out of interest, why do you feel that a struggling Halo series under 343i will benefit from killing off the master chief, yet competent publishers such as Nintendo or Konami have not had to "shed baggage" with characters from long time, critically successful series' such as Mario, Zelda or Metal Gear Solid?

I think the truer way of moving forward is to keep the core mechanics in check, but simply change the structure, scale and execution. An open world Halo campaign for example, imo would be a far superior evolution than the tired "ten missions and online multiplayer" format that I'm expecting from Halo Chive.

There's no coming back from killing Chief.

It 343i wanted to shed baggage they could easily make a spin off Halo title, with "'new gameplay" that normal Halo fans would revolt against. It's that easy.

Should have clarified, I meant in MP as I hated how H4 didn't have them. And I thought with a larger focus on them in the story, there probably is more work going into them and a possibility of them in MP.

But now that I think about it, unlikely, with with all the new spartan abilities :(

Just when the Halo 4 hype brought me down, the Lore thread and this brings me way the fuck back up. The commercials were ok, but just the constant conversations about where the series is headed has me stupid hype. We got to see chief get a piece of his humanity back in halo 4. I think were gonna get exposed to a lot more "human" flaws in his character, which makes him an enemy of ONI/UNSC based on some selfish act
(finding a way to bring Cortana back) that fucks over humanity as a result.

The game for you is Destiny. Leave Halo proper alone kthx.

Yep. We have all kinds of errant rants over at the Lore Thread, but we all keep coming to these same broad conclusions. Whatever it is that Chief does, it will more than likely be a deliberately local act that causes inadvertently widespread chaos.

343i took the cookie cutter solider character that every standard FPS has and gave Chief a soul and a heart and a mind to think for himself. It's been a really great thing to watch unfold.

Hello HaloGAF!

I'm wondering how/when Locke became a Spartan. Is it part of Nightfall (I've only stomached the first episode so far), a novel or will be be in Halo 5? From what I understand of the first nightfall episode he's just a solider/captain.

I hope they'll be using him as a second character for splitscreen, or that they'll use someone else when available. I loved having player 2 as the Arbiter in 2 and 3. (and I'm still hoping for his return to this role) It made co-op more "believable" as we're not playing as the same person.
If Locke has a small team with him, then one of those could work when MC is unavailable.

Just realised that the bullet wound on locke (when he's on the ground in the chief trailer) covers up the oni symbol. Maybe im just looking too much into it but these two trailers were so full of symbolism it's hard to ignore.

Edit

No, nightfall ends with no explanation of how he becomes a spartan. Doesn't even show him as a spartan, and it ends with him being a solider/captain.

Uhm no.

Open World First Person Shooter are awful IMO. Halo needs to be Halo and not another open world snooze fest.

So you don't have confidence 343i can innovate the Halo series outside of the current structure?

And I disagree that

1| Theyre not good (Far Cry 2/Metroid Prime)
2| That shooters cannot evolve beyond what they are today.

Thanks man. Hopefully there'll be something in 5, but to be honest I wouldn't mind if he just is a Spartan in it. In my opinion, Nightfall may have done more harm than good to the character. Perhaps they can do something similar to the Arbiter reveal in 2. I believe all the important plot points should be explained in the games and not secondary media.

odst was a nice test of sorts for a hub world leading into more traditional linear experiences. i really hope halo 5 goes this direction, i rather enjoyed it

We haven't seen that transition yet. I'd imagine it'll be something we see in the very beginning of Halo 5 in an opening cinematic of sorts, or perhaps in some extended media that will be released prior.

Yes! I loved ODST's level format. I'd like to see something similar in Halo 5, but on a much larger scale.

There is nothing innovative in creating another 0815 open world shooter.

FarCry 2 bored me to sleep. Sry but no, keep the Halo structure how it always was.

even the narrative structure of ODST seems like a nice fit for a way to tells MC's story of "betrayal" through locke

If the Division ends up being good.... I wouldn't hate an open world pseudo MMO like Halo game.

I'd assume it would be about traveling the Galaxy trying to collect forerunner artifacts from the Janus Key. Idk. I don't want it to replace Halo proper but it could be cool.

I've wanted a Halo spin off with new gameplay for a while (I thought Reach would be a lot more tactical/ghost recon esque before they showed gameplay screens) But I don't want to get rid of proper Halo multiplayer.

Ideal fix for m ode would be if they launched a sort of Halo multiplayer platform. I would call it Halo Online but I guess that's taken.... Think of it like MCC (but more functional lol) that would be the hub of proper Halo multiplayer. And then they could continuously update that while making interesting spin off games.

I wouldn't mind this. In my perfect world we’d get a game like Fallout 3/Skyrim but with Halo style combat and vehicles. However, I know others wouldn’t like it though. So I am fine with things as they are. I am just really anxious to play the game. I was kind of bummed with the release date. I had foolishly gotten my hopes up for a September release.

Yeah, based on the hints we've gotten, it certainly seems like we're in for more than your standard single player Halo fare. I'm very curious to see what they do with single player.

Fine with me. I usually care about multiplayer and gameplay most of the time. However, I'm really into science fiction and a lot of people I know IRL have no clue about the story different arcs behind the Halo universe which go beyond what is presented in the games. You seem to already have a good picture of the expanded universe so I don't blame you on anything.

I have to dwell into the universe myself before I say anything. I've enjoyed playing all of the Halo games and with what's being discussed in the community OT, I'm curious to know more.

I don't think it will go the full open world route, but probably be more semi-hub like based. Fairly large spaces that either have recurring events and/or have sections open up when the player progresses through the campaign or level cap. Spartan Ops experimented with those ideas, so it would be natural for them to keep experimenting in that space.

There's so much there to be discovered. It's kinda wild how far ahead they've planned all of this stuff, even down to the smallest of easter eggs and clues in the extended fiction and other media. They've got a firm grasp on the lore, and it's been a total hoot trying to follow the breadcrumbs.

You guys think we'll get more flashbacks in Halo 5, back to when Chief was in training? I know the MCC was presented as if a debriefing for Locke, so perhaps Halo 5 will have earlier stuff in it? I'd love to be able to play as MC going through training, or some of the missions mentioned in Fall of Reach/First Strike (Côte d'Azur, defense of Castle Base, Unyeilding Hierophant, etc)
