Seriously. I can't believe there are people complaining about Halo 4 and then saying Halo 3 was great.
Halo 4 made me appreciate it more than ever. The BR spread, netcode and equipment is shit, but just having power-ups, static weapon spawns, no loadouts, no flinch and no AAs makes it incredibly refreshing.

Dropping a piece of equipment into a man cannon was sublime. Worked well on Narrows CTF - whether it's dropping a bubble shield and then going through the cannon yourself, or dropping a power drain and some 'nades to soften the defense...so much fun.

If infinity Slayer was really like Mario Kart the deadl last players would get a weapon that kills anyone who you can see on your screen.

...or something like that, in not sure what the Halo equivalent of a blue turtle shell and comeback AI would be. All I know is ordnance drops aren't close.

I didn't say Infinity Slayer was like Mario Kart, I said that power weapons in the mode were distributed in the style of Mario Kart ie randomly and in the fashion of a slot machine (doesn't a specialisation allow you to re-roll? Lol). Pretty bad reading comprehension there bro.

As for the blue shell, it's not a flawless analogy but the King in FFA Regicide is unfairly punished for no other crime than performing the best up until that point in the game.

Also, Halo 3 is my favourite Halo. Best meta features, memorable campaign, 1-50, some great maps and the best sniper. CE and 2 do a lot of things better but Halo 3 wins as an overall package.

Hey at least people are praising Halo 3 with rose tinted glasses now instead of Halo 2 with rose-tinted glasses. So we're making progress in this thread.

How long did it take them to fix melee in Halo 3? Just curious.

Halo 3 was great
Reach was awful
Halo 4 is good
Good man.

Equipment was dumb because it was all about swinging extremes. You're either super defensive with bubble shields or regeneration, or you're instantly killing with power drain. Then there's grav lift which might as well have been a piece of the map design since it had its designated spots and rarely anything else.

I feel like I'm the only one who honestly didn't care for equipment in Halo 3. Most times you knew whether or not someone had it, and even if you didn't they weren't particularly overpowered, IMO. The netcode + non-hitscan BR was really bad though... So many times my shots wouldn't register.

Game was still better than 4 though. And custom games were awesome.

Wow I guess I just played again some MLG kids on Solace. One kid is a 130, the other 106. Now I know what people mean when they say jetpack breaks map design. These two were like fucking experts with the jet pack .. Always managing to grab sight line advantages on every player in the game. Just a slight height advantage with jetpack enabled them to aim over objects on the map. Our team got demolished

Bungie faces always looked like ass. This example is more fair.

You can say what you want about these textures, but the art design in Halo 3 is unmatched.

Really? The art was terrible. The Brutes in that game were really sad looking. Shitty armor. Same goes for the marines. Some really generic looking levels too.

I'm just joshin' fellas, though I'd hardly call a theater mode screen of Halo 3 "fair."

Though if you ask me, environment art in Halo 4 surpasses 3, and Reach had the best looking Elites.

Reach had the best looking elites, but they were the least fun to fight for me compared to their Halo 1 and Halo 2 iterations.

The halo 4 elites are a cut and paste job from reach so they aren't up for consideration.

I can pretty much agree to this.

Let me say due to the less played games overall from the last two halo games were partially because they both were dramatically different than the previous haloz. The numbers show that.

Halo 3 is best Halo.

Was just playing it now. In the first 30 seconds of holding my first Sniper I had more fun than I have had with Halo 4 in a long time.

I am sure that the Halo 4 BR has spread which is just as bad as 3's. Can someone do like a proper scientific study on it? Whats the best way to measure it other than just shooting at a wall?

Halo 3 ran at like 20 frames a second.
The jaggies. I still have nightmares.

And the faces, and the blocky heads. And bad dialogue, and gravemind/cortana slowdowns to spout nonsense.

Campaign was top notch otherwise though, and had some nice memorable encounters. I prefer Reach for the most part though, all things considered. Reach was more coherent, tried some new things, and ended so damn well.

Bros for life.

On another note: Wreckage and Shatter finally showed up for me in BTB. Played two matches on Wreckage and initial impression is that the map is even too big for BTB (Yes, you read that correctly).

There are two major problems with Wreckage that I have encountered so far: long sight lines and unnecessary graphic effects that bog down gameplay such as fog, wind and blinding sunlight. Because the map is so big it encourages camping and use of long range weapons. The hill at the back of the map especially showcases that, from the top hill you can see a large section and easily get kills from there. I’ve seen groups straight up camp up there with camo and shoot from a far with the DMR or Light Rifle. What makes it worse is the blinding sunlight and fog when looking up the hill, you barely see who is shooting at you or if you are actually shooting anybody up there. A clear cut advantage that can and will be abused in the future.

There are some other annoyances i.e. the confusing layout, but I will chalk that up to not having played the map enough. On another note, while looking at the map overall and the size of it, it reminded me that it could have been an Firefight map. You can clearly see sections where enemies could drop in (Hill, front section and the middle section).

Halo 3 was great
Reach was decent
Halo 4 is good
I'm prolly the biggest Reach hater, but they game did have tons of features, Firefight, Active Roster and the Grenade Launcher. That atleast earns a "Decent".

You are so blinded by nostalgia.
How's it nostalgia if I've been playing halo 3 regularly since 2007?

Halo 3 is my favorite halo. Not for nostalgia, but because I had the most fun with it. Going for a 50 was the most fun I've had in a halo game and I met some really cool people playing it. Yes, there were host issues and the br sucked, but it was still a blast to play.

Personally, I base a game off of how much fun I have with it. Technically, it could be the buggiest piece of shit ever, but if I had fun playing it, that's all that matters to me.

Do not agree one bit.

Sierra 117
Tsavo Highway
Flood Gate
The Ark
The Covenant
Cortana
Halo

All of those were amazing (in regards to their art). The only generic level that I can think of is Crows Nest which was on the plain side.

Brute Chieftain's armour was awesome, IMO. Marines were an natural evolution from Halo 2's, but I will agree that they were pretty plain. Reach really nailed their design... Not even sure what happened in Halo 4. I've said it before, but green and orange trackpants, buckteeth and black eyes? Jeeeeeeeeeeeez 343i.

Halo has never been realistic.

I would imagine that many members of 343 would have a very strong understanding of physics to put together a 3d game. Going back to the above they probably realise that realistic physics would be less fun than unrealistic physics

Sprint slow down is a mechanic which stops double beatdowns and other general annoying behaviour.

Why in the ever loving fuck would you not want it to exist?

What is a ever loving fuck anyway?

I was pretty late with this - net didn't update on my phone till after I posted it - but all the same I just want to say I support 343 in adding stopping power

That said I don't think sprint should be in the game at all

I don't have an issue with stopping power, only how it's implemented. In Gears of War, stopping power applies when the bullets being fired are traveling in the opposite direction of the player being hit. IE, you run at a dude with a chainsaw, he shoots you on the approach, you're going to slow down and get killed. If I shoot somebody in the back in Gears of War while they're running away, they're only taking damage, not having their speed reduced.

I'm apathetic toward sprint. I'd be fine if they removed it and just increased the default run speed, but I'm fine with it being there. I do not agree with the notion that punishing players for trying to be smart and retreating to re-engage later or from a better position makes for better gameplay. All it does is help ensure that Halo 4 plays more like COD, where the first person to land a shot wins 75% of the time and if that first shot is landed from the side or behind, then it jumps to 95% of the time.

And I'm speaking as somebody that's both suffered from it and exploited it to my benefit.

At least you can admit it. That's the reason why I hate it.

Also, the boltshot right now is on par with the Gears 3 sawed-off, completely ruins the game.

How can anyone with a straight face say Halo 3 was great?

- Ugly
- Ugly AND shitty framerate (an insult) AND sub HD (wow)
- Poor online in terms of latency
- Awful Matchmaking management
- Awful Matchmaking in general... Would take forever to get a game.
- Heavies
- Stupid gameplay settings... Destroyed assualt
- Overpowered vehicles
- Equipment
- Slow movement
- Retarded melee lunge
- Recycled soundtrack
- Shitty maps for the most part

And a bunch of other stuff I can't recall of the top of my head... Total stinker of a game.

The fact that hardly anyone plays it now says it all. At least H2 was topping the XBOX charts even when Gears was out.

Halo 3 = Halo: Reach* > Halo 2 > Halo: CE = Halo 4 IMO thus far.

But obviously haven't put as much time into Halo 4 yet.

*(I consider them equal but different... Halo 3 was definitely more 'pure' while Halo: Reach added complexity but brought better weapon balance)

The lag is horrendous. There is like a 3 frame delay in grenade throw animation

Haha. Admittedly after the Brutes in Halo 2, anything could've been better... But I've always loved the sound the armour makes when it falls off in Halo 3. That kind of feedback is non-existent in Halo 4 and Reach - and that's why I love it.

Makes those final blows so satisfying.

And ironically the Chieftan armor is the only visual item 343i did not retcon in 4...

No I hated Equipment too. In fact I edited every map to remove it. However compared to AAs it was a hell of a lot better choice without a doubt. For me I rank the MPs of the games as such:

Halo1
Halo3
Halo2
Halo: Reach

I thought everyone liked Halo 3?

It is certainly my favorite Halo, MP wise. Although the netcode was atrocious.

Also, Chopper.

Steelyuhas
Kuroyume
Striker

All don't like Halo 3. All don't like it for understandable reasons. Well, Steely hasn't explained his, but I can't imagine it being much different from the other two.

Shut up, shut up! You're gonna make me start to play it again and I'll end up spending weeks on it!

I would play it with you.

- I dont care about graphics.
- Framerate sucked, but I played it so much I quickly got used to it. Halo Reach and 4 can be bad at times too - at least 3 was consistant and once you where used to it - it felt fine. With Reach and 4 the drops really screw it up.
- Only really played customs with people who lived locally and the netcode was great, when online it was a mixed back but back in 2007 and 2008 it worked really well actually. 2009 is where the netcode seemed to get shittier due to lower player pool and server moves.
- Awful Matchmaking management - agreed, the terrible playlist management made me stick to customs.
- Matchmaking times where ok for me back in the games prime. It was 2009 onwards that this turned bad.
- Heavies - yeah seriously fuck heavies. The weighting on it was low enough though.
- Stupid gameplay settings... Destroyed assualt - agreed, but I was more of a Slayer person anyway.
- Overpowered vehicles - agreed to an extent, laser neutralised this, but the vehicle/ infantry sandbox was worse than the previous games. It is no better in Reach or Halo 4 though. At least there is no mantis.
- Equipment - I would take equipment over AA's any day.
- Slow movement - yeah this sucked but I liked the strafing and jump height, and since everyone had slow movement the combat itself worked well. Just getting from battle to battle sucked.
- Retarded melee lunge - yeah fuck melee in any game.
- Recycled soundtrack - soundtrack was great, but who cares? Multiplayer is where the staying power is and soundtrack doesnt matter there.
- Shitty maps for the most part - yeah agreed. Pit and Guardian got a lot of playtime due to this.

Halo 3 is still a great game - just marred by terrible matchmaking management and now terrible lag.

Halo 3's multiplayer was disappointing considering the precedent set by Halo 2, but is solid in retrospect after the disaster zone that was Reach.

Also, Halo 2 was amazing in ideal conditions.

But the game was also really buggy. I spent most of my time in Customs which was awesome.

Why when I lose in this game do I want to rage so hard? Only other MP game that gets to me like this is Gears. Maybe I just shouldn't play MP games anymore. Like I want to be good and right now my service record is about 2700+ kills and 2250+ deaths. I guess that's decent but the higher level guys in the 80s and over 100 absolutely kick my ass

While using that term to describe players annoys me, especially when you mention SR (which is meaningless), I get the intent. Glad to see another person see the light. Solace is one map that is so ridiculously exploited by jetpack if used well. Use the copious amounts of cover to gain positioning on the map that while still providing you cover, in addition to new sightlines, negates the cover potential for other players.

"They designed the maps with jetpack usage in mind this time." Bullshit.

Hmm, number look up?

In 2004 when 2 came out I was in college, same with 3. Reach and 4 I'm in the working world. No significant other though, which does give me more time to play games. In the Halo 2 days I lived in the dorms, which is why it's such a high number. Nothing to do.

Halo 2: 4,135
Halo 3: 1,746
Reach: 1,204
Halo 4: 300 (and counting)

I was also in college in 2004. I'm seeing a trend here:

Halo 2: 1,612
Halo 3: 856
Reach: 740
Halo 4: 94 (and counting)
