Halo Wars gametype DLC released, overpriced

Three new gimmicky game modes to supplement the paltry two that were offered at launch, for 800MSP. Completely overpriced. The worst thing is that Halo Wars is a great game but really needs new multiplayer maps and leader/factions, not stupid gametypes that people just won't end up playing.

Anyway if you've got money to spare or just feel like validating insulting pricing plans, the content is available for download now.

I thought I'd take the time to point out how entertained I am to see how Valve's recent Left 4 Dead Survival Pack is "brought to you by <X>" on XBL. Perceived value!

At least the game modes should be free IMO. Sad really, I was looking forward to this.

I guess I'll have to wait until next summer and hope they drop the price for a deal of the week. :D

Rewind a few years ago:

"800 points for 3 maps! Disgusting!

Present day:

"800 points for 3 gametypes! Disgusting!"

Things have definitely gotten worse. I hope to go we don't end up with "800 points for 3 continues!"

Every new DLC announcement makes the DLC supporters/apologists even more wrong than they always were.
I can't believe so many people were talking as if DLC was going to be great for gamers. I have some magic beans you guys can buy as well.

Well, the publisher is Microsoft after all. They're the same chaps that held a Halo 3 map pack from release for about 6 months when it was already finished.

It doesn't need other gametypes, it needs new maps, new races, new leaders, new units/vehicles etc.
Exactly. The core mechanic is great - we just need more of the same. The requirement is so simple you have to wonder what's going on.

I know people underestimate just how much work is involved in producing content for games, but here's 100MSP worth of content that could be done in no time:
New Leader
Special Unit: Sniper Infantry. Model exists in game
Super Unit Upgrade: Cobra > Rhino. Model exists in game
Economy Bonus: Turrets half priced, half build time. No new assets
Special Power: Spy Satellite - reveals map for fifteen seconds. No new assets

What? They're seriously charging that much just for game modes? If it was the modes and new maps it would be worth it, but this would be overpriced at 400.

ba-zing!

how is the game anyway? my 20gb has zero space on it so retail demos are a no go (not that i would be rushing to download the demo if i could).

i've heavily played PC RTS games for years, so it's natural for me to be extremely skeptical of the controls. i am probably more biased against it than most, as Warcraft III has always been my RTS of choice and that game revolves around micro finesse. it doesn't help that i never liked Ensemble's previous efforts. their Star Wars RTS was a big disappointment.

it's o-k.

i mean it's not bad. but it's not really good. held my attention for like a week or two. probably would play it again in a couple months.

i'm a big pc rts player too. so yea.

From what I've played, there isn't much to attract the PC RTS gamer here. Simplistic units and resource model, terrible framerate, and well, terrible content support. Don't know how the balance is, since I just haven't played it much.

I think you'd be far happier with Dawn of War 2, especially if you liked Warcraft 3.

I fully agree with the units you mentioned above. What about some other leaders coming from the Halo universe in general.

Leader: Cortana
Special Unit: Master Chief himself
Baracks consisting of only Spartans: Spartan with sniper, Spartan with laser, Spartan with turret, Spartan with sword, smtn like that. Of course with the same limit Spartans normally have.

I'm a pretty big PC RTS player too, though I prefer games like EU, Victoria and Hearts of Iron... That said, I love Halo Wars. There aren't many PC RTS' that can match it for balance; Star Craft being literally the only one that comes to mind. And it's different enough in it's quicker pace that it compliments existing mainstays rather than competing with them.

I rate the core Halo Wars game very highly.

EDIT: On topic, I suspect some manager at Microsoft wanted to trial a new price point on something relatively harmless... >:(

I was going to pick this up when I first saw it advertised and then I saw 800 MS points. No way, not for new gametypes, if it included some new maps, then maybe.

Halo Wars is a heavy macro game. It's just not possible to do really good micro with a controller, no matter what it plays like. I don't think you'd dig it. It feels like playing Starcraft with two fingers missing, and I generally enjoyed Halo Wars.

yeah, i figured my playtime and cash dollars were better spent on Relic's games. i still need to sink more time into Company of Heroes, but Dawn of War 2 does look pretty sweet.

really interested in Men of War as well.

In many cases, it has been. I've bought DLC for many - but not all - of the games I bought and I've been pleased with it.

Buy the good stuff. Don't buy the overpriced stuff. And wow does this fall into the latter category.
