If you don't know Hans Niemann by name, you likely heard about recent chess cheating accusations leveled against the 20-year-old when he won in an upset against Magnus Carlsen--a man who is claimed by many to be the greatest chess player who's ever lived. Rumors arose that Niemann was receiving guidance on which moves to make from an unnamed accomplice via WiFi/Bluetooth-connected anal beads. This has yet to be proven or disproven:

Cheater or no, one thing is undeniable: Niemann is a troll--imagine that trash-talking 12-year-old who just 360 no-scoped you in Call of Duty is a Chess Grand Master:

After the initial upset, Magnus Carlsen and Hans Niemann rematched, ending abruptly when Carlsen uncharacteristically stepped away from the game 2 moves in, likely due to his belief that his opponent was cheating.

Niemann has admitted to cheating in online games before but denies ever doing so in an in-person game. Many chess players will use chess engines in online games to learn from the algorithm, so that's not particularly damning. On the other hand, he was banned from Chess.com and other events due to cheating suspicions. A BBC article claims that, statistically, it's likely Hans cheated in over 100 games: https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-63140246

Some other things about Niemann add to the mystery: Why can't he explain the moves he's made, like other players can? Why does he look so anxious and disinterested in what's going on on the board? What explains his meteoric rise in the ranks in the past two years?

After the accusations, Niemann levied a $100M lawsuit against (among others) Chess.com and Magnus Carlsen for slander; libel; unlawful group boycott; tortious interference with contract and business expectancies; and civil conspiracy. This case was later thrown out by a Missouri federal judge.

So who is Hans Niemann, and just what is going on? Do we have another Billy Mitchell on our hands? A despicable cheating villain in a niche competitive scene who's nevertheless entertaining to watch? Was his match against Carlsen just a fluke? Did chess finally "click" for Niemann in the past few years?

How do you think the story will end? If he is a cheater, how do you think he pulled it off?

Video of Niemann's initial win over Carlsen:

PS: At the very least, the rumors led to one of the better It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia episodes, wherein Danny Devito's character Frank uses the rumored cheating method to win a chess tournament.
