As someone who grew up in the middle of the cold war with the threat of imminent obliteration, I remember this in my late teens as a symbol of hope. It wasn't my country or even my continent, but it was amazing.

I don't get it

Germany, Munich or Munchen, was the first real international location I visited a couple years ago during a study abroad in Austria. I visited Germany a few times during my summer and loved it. I felt most people were very welcoming and I loved the history, culture, and architecture. Congrats Germany!

....though Prague was my favorite city I visited ha.

And I would move to Innsbruck, Austria any day

It's quite the achievement to integrate a country with a nonexistent economy and providing them the same social benefits from day one without collapsing.

East germany actually had one of the strongest economies in the eastern bloc, though it traded mostly with them. After the reunion many east german companies went bankrupt or were cheaply bought by west german competitors.

Nowadays there are a few places in the former GDR, mostly the big cities, which are prosperous but much of the east never recovered.

Within the Estern Block bubble but the GDR itself was broken and bankrupt.

The best thing what happened was to close down the largest part of the industry there after the unification. Suddenly we can bath in our rivers again and it reduced the CO2 output in such a way that it was enough to reach the goals of the Kyoto protocol.

Happy birthday Deutschland-GAF! I think your country is amazing and I want to stop by for a beer and a go at the Nurburgring.

And thanks for the 7x1, we needed it.

1 hour left before my night shift ends, this'll keep me awake til my 30 min. drive home. Thanks for the thread, and wow I knew the Berlin Wall fell during the 80s, just didn't realize it was the late 80s.
