Happy Birthday Xbox Live - 10 Years old today

Ghost Recon was a release title also for Live. Again for a console only gamer I was in awe communicating with other players and using team work. =O

I remember when playing Halo 2 almost everyone had a mic and a lot of people communicated tactics while playing. Now, barely anyone I play with on Halo 4 has a mic. Is this a trend? I'd really like more mics in team games for communicating tactics. I realize you will still get the 11 year olds screaming random curse words, but that is what mute is for.

Also, 343i, fix your mute system. I would like to be able to mute people while the map is loading, or before I pick my loadout. I hate having to stop my game to hit start and then scroll using the horrible Dpad to mute.

They all have mics, they're just in a private party chat.

Party chat killed communications with strangers

I remember when mute wasn't needed. Good times. Good times T_T.

Let's go back even further.

Actual civil conversations

Civility didn't die. I had many great conversations during Links 4 player mode. If you play games that children and morons gravitate towards, regardless of console, you're going to hear dipshits saying stupid stuff. It's more prevalent on 360 simply because Microsoft makes it easier than anyone else to voice chat.

They should bring back voice masks.

No they should not =/

Damn you microsoft and your included headset

It was amazing at the time of launch.. a unified/standard on-line service for a console...

(Especially when you think about what Sony and Nintendo were offering at the time.. basicly placing on-line for their systemin the hands of the developers to handle everything, and the Dreamcasts per game style of online)

Set the trends for the indutry to follow the next gen...

I was hoping for a surprise release of MechAssault HD on XBLA. :(

Don't tease me. I would be all over that. Back then I made friends with everyone on the last man standing leaderboard. You would know exactly which person would be piloting each mech. Catapult for life.

XBL has been a huge success for them. I'm not a fan of paying, but I appreciate the reliability of it over these 10 years. I'm incredibly pleased with XBLA. Source of some of the absolute best games this gen.
Don't you get free XBL Gold cards from a friend at MicroSoft?

For the anniversary there really should have been a push to get everyone to wear their mics today. Haha could you imagine.
For some reason though I have been using a mic lately and it hasn't been bad. I think there is less of an audience(because party chat) for these dickheads that there seems to be less of them. I got a "Good game guys" in H4 the other night. I was in shock.

I came pretty late to the party when it came to online play on consoles. GRAW 2 was my first, and man was I hooked.

Had a lot of fun since then, but I haven't paid for Gold in a long time. Picked up a 1 month code here, a 48 hr code there, played on free days, etc.

This. Games on the OG Xbox were a lot more fun than the MP games now. Only games on the 360 that compared IMO are Halo 3, Gears 1, COD4, and Shadowrun.

absolutely this. it was a gaming revelation. such an amazing experience. made some good people on xbox live who I went onto meet and become friends with. it's not the same now though, full of lots of vile language and so forth. you still do come across some good people though, so it's not all bad but the number of good to bad isn't as high as it used back when I first started playing halo 2.

For me it was also the fact that I was much better at Halo back then. Maybe it's because it was before achievements when I used to play games for fun, instead of worrying about achievement requirements and thinking about how many matches I would have to play before unlocking such and such-- which makes it feel like a chore. I would just play them and have fun. I really need to stop giving a shit about that. And people wonder why I'm personally okay with Wii U not having system wide achievements.

Midtown Mutha Fuckin Madness 3 - I wish I kept all of the hilarious moments this game brought in a journal or something. Hunter, Capture the Gold, all great stuff. Was really hoping Joyride was going to be the spiritual successor when it was first announce way back, but it wasn't. There was a GAF group going on for awhile, really hysterical stuff.

Return to Castle Wolfenstein - I actually put a ton of time in this and got awesome at it, something that's pretty rare for me nowadays (though I'm really trying w/ Halo 4)

Gears Horde Mode - This has always been the highlight between me and my local friends. A lot of them don't game as much as they used to so when a new Gears comes out, everybody gets sucked back in. Sure we only get a months worth of multiplayer out of it, but it's still a blast.

Halo/Call of Duty - I guess these experiences really depend on who you play with (random racist strangers VS friends) but again, getting a group together and getting our asses kicked was always a good time. And party chat always keeps the randoms from spoiling the fun.

Phantasy Star Online - This game got me hooked bad, but I loved every minute. It got to the point where I would wake up early and set up my user shop before work, then after work reap the rewards and do a few runs. I played for about 6 months before finally saying goodbye. It was a great ride.

It's been a great service that's evolved so much over the past decade. People bitch that it should be free blah blah, but whatever. It made for some of the best gaming moments in the past 10 years...and for that I salute you, XBL.

OOooooooo the Catapault! My Kitty (MadCat) Killer!

PGR2 Cat and Mouse on Nurburgring might still be the greatest online multiplayer experience I've ever had. I played so much of that with some people from the Gamespot message boards back in the day.

I have spent some $500 on Xbox Live fees over the 10 years. Remember how magical it was to take MM3 online for the first time ever. Countless Halo 2 hours.

Has been so worth it.

Crimson Skies
Rainbow Six 3
Halo 2
Burnout 3
Unreal Championship

All fantastic experiences on the original Xbox via Live.

Anybody on GAF big into NFS: Underground 2 or SW: Republic Commando on Xbox? They had rather small online communities and most people played with each other regularly. Wondering if there are any names I'd recognize on here.

best headset ever. I don't really care for the current one, it does its job, but the one above was perfection.
What? Really? I thought that headset was all kinds of awful. The actual ear phone was connected to the head strap by that little piece of plastic, resulting in every one of my headsets breaking within the first month. It only became useable after I decided to forcefully reattach it by drilling in a screw.

Nice, just saw the timeline on the dashboard hehe...brought back nice memories for sure, although I could of done without Zune in there lol, bloody thing never came out in Canada anyway, but yeah, good times over the years...

I still have my original Xbox, what a monster lol,at the trailer park,I have a bunch of old classic rock songs on there, and I played Indiana Jones last summer...

Halo 2 starter here.

Fun times.

Does the fee suck? Yes.
Does the service kick fucking ass? Yes
Is there a better alternative that convinces me to stop paying? No.

Thems the breaks.

PGR 2 and Midtown Madness were two of my favorites to play with friends. Rainbow 6 was easily my most played original XBL game. So many fun memories.
