Harada ponders "Xenosaga HD Collection"

... isn't mobile supposed to be very popular in Japan?

Is that just iOS phones? Or does that also mean things like tablets and Android and Windows ones too?

Because lots of popular tablets like the Surface Pro 3 would probably be able to play Xenosaga. And putting more games on the PC would probably help sell to the mobile audience if Windows tablets are popular in Japan.

So that seems like a good reason for more Japanese developers and publishers to put more games on the PC.

Mostly iOS from what I understand. As for tablets, this could change since Microsoft is now "giving windows for free" to manufacturers for tablets smaller than 9 inch. This led to 100 to 150 dollars devices with a true Windows and x86 CPU capable of running decent UE3 games.

We need to gather as much support as possible from every gaming community we know.

We need to make this beautiful dream comes true.

Let's do the impossible and bring Xenosaga Trilogy HD to life.

Come on... it's time of sharing love & support for one of the most epic and underrated Trilogy ever and give it the credit it deserves.

As someone who has Xenogears in a top 5 list, would I like Xenosaga? I've never played any of them. I had always heard that they're absolutely nothing like Xenogears.

Most websites aren't even reporting it yet. Not rpgfan, rpgamer, heck not even the operation rainfall website.

How did that campaign even get started for Xenoblade anyway?

They're definitely different than xenogears but they pull elements from that game ie (mech battles--which vary from 1,2,3, combos in saga1,2, not 3, and the religious crazy plot). Also they fall in the same universe.

I for one would love xenosaga as a ps2 classic or hd version. I lent out 1 to a friend and haven't played it again. 3 is still a great game. 2 is the meh. Uncensored version of 3 would be amazing

Yeah, I also heard that they're not all equal in regards to quality. So 3 is the good one? Would I have to start from 1, or would it be better to bypass 1 and just play 3? I'm more interested in seeing the best experience possible up front.

Xenogears was ( and still ) one of the greatest games in my list... and Xenosaga gave me everything I wanted and much much more, it even TOPPED it with Xenosaga Episode III.

Do yourself a huge favor and play the Trilogy,,,, and help us to bring it to the HD era.

Edit: lol no you can't just skip to 3... it's like jumping to the last 3rd of a book you are reading or the last 30 minute of a movie you are watching, you have to experience the trilogy the right and correct way or you are going to miss A LOOOOOOOOOT and get lost.

Play 1 and 3, skip 2. They're not that long RPGs either, but get ready to watch some long-ass cut scenes.

Oh, that's disappointing. I'm glad that Microsoft is doing that, though.

I wonder why iOS is so popular in Japan.

Alright, thanks guys! I've always been worried that I'll hate it, so I've just stayed away from it. I guess it's time to jump into it, though. I've played through enough MGS that cutscenes aren't much of a deterrent.

I think this thread convinced me to start playing the Xeno games (Aside from -balde and XCX).

I've heard great things about Xenogears, and Xenosaga is apparently three games? This'll take a while. :V

Honestly the best thing to do would be actually play 1/3 and then just watch the cutscenes for 2 on youtube, you get the full story that way and don't have to sit through the combat system. Story wise 2 honestly wasn't "that" bad since it was primarily a character development chapter for 2 of the more interesting characters and one of the best villians in the series(or rpgs in general).

What's so bad about the combat system? It's different from the other two? Or is this just one of those things where I'd need to play it to fully understand how awful it is?

You had to weaken individual parts of the enemy or something, and it wasn't trivial. I only know I suffered a couple of hours of that shit and dropped the game, random encounters could go to 10 minutes each easily. I don't know what were they thinking.

3 is flawless in every sense, though. Awesome game until the end if you could stomach the most silly parts of the story.

And I liked the cartoonish style of 1. Come at me.

It's one of those things you'd really need to see to get the idea yourself. However the best description I can really give for it is "have fun spending 2+ mins on trash enemies for half the game". They really didn't think the whole "hp doubling for the west" thing through when they planned out the combat since it was bad enough in the original. Bosses at least aren't "too" terrible other than a boss about halfway through the game and the final one which takes 30-40mins due to his multiple forms and you hitting like a kitten even at higher levels.

I can't remember it fully. The system wasn't hard, just incredibly slow and tedious. Figuring out the correct pattern to break and either knock down or launch enemies, and then spamming it for the rest of the battle. Made random battles last longer than bosses in other games

Wow. What is happening in the world? This is an insanely awesome prospect. Episode II, not so great, but I'd love all three in HD. I would. WHERE DO I SIGN UP?!!?

Yeah, it's one of those things you need to experience yourself. I can't explain it well. It actually isn't a terrible battle system, when it clicked it felt really good. Lots of aerial acrobatics and pizzaz. BUT battles took way way too long. A trash mob would take over five minutes on average, which may not seem like much, but consider most RPG battles are over and done with in under a minute. It was just a battle of attrition. I remember my party's attacks did ridiculously small damage and it was just not a good feeling. Especially after the fairly friction free combat of XS 1. XS3 takes the battle system of part 1 and refines it.

Because they are owned by them now. They can do the HD Collection without Monolithsoft, but if they asked Monolithsoft to make the HD Collection for them, it's essentially asking a Nintendo first-party to develop a game on a non-Nintendo console.

Square-Enix didn't let Monolithsoft break away from Square or anything like that. Monolithsoft didn't exist until Xenosaga after X amount of people who used to work for Square started the company with backing from Namco-Bandai.

They certainly can do a HD collection without them. I say give it to Bluepoint. I see where you're coming form though. It would be weird if Namco asked Nintendo to make a HD collection of a series of games that were exclusive to PS2 at the time on every console lol

Oh yeah, I really was talking about that team: the one that made Xenogears.

I've been playing the series once a year every year for quite awhile now. HD sounds nice and all but letting Monolithsoft rework episode 2's battle system would be a glorious megaton for me. Cutting through minor enemies by the end of the game is just excruciating. It's doubtful we would get any gameplay adjustments but I can dream.

Ask the the guy on twitter, its the best and only option at the moment.

Maybe they should have made a post saying they want to get at least 50k signatures. How else can you see if the demand is worth the job.

Would totally buy day 1, love Xenosaga.

You're not alone, I loved Xenosaga 1's art style (and 3).

Well it would give me an excuse to finish the third game. It would be nice to complain about this series again with you all :p

Man, I don't remember that at all. You're probably right though since I was barely on the internet when I played through the trilogy and was surprised to hear all the hate on 2 years later.

They certainly can do a HD collection without them.

They CAN, but they can't do it RIGHT without Monolithsoft's involvement. There are a lot of prerendered scenes in the series, especially in Episode I. Without Monolithsoft and the original files, the best you can get is bad upscaling of a lot of Episode I.

XS3 takes the battle system of part 1 and refines it.

No it doesn't. Episode III's battle system is nothing like Episode I. Episode I's battle system is an evolution of the Xenogears battle system. Episode III's is just another generic, turn based battle system.

The third game is amazing, but i wouldn't want to go back and play episode one or two unless they were drastically changed.

This mainly had to do with the fact that for whatever ungodly reason they felt the need to double the health of regular enemies in the western releases of the game. The original still wasn't perfect with it battle system but it made grinding for bosses/optional content far less of a chore.

Wow, I didn't know about that, who tought it was a good idea?

I LOVED the trilogy. Imported I-III from the USA versions because we only got Episode II in Europe. I was so deep into the story, couldn't stop playing and binged the whole thing in one summer :D
I don't think I would ever play it again, though.
Let's be honest: remastering three big JRPGs is a helluva work. There will never be enough support to justify that investment. I wish you guys luck with your campaign, nevertheless^^

Should I go back and play 3? I own it but never played it. I was kind of disappointed in the first two and I just wanted to support the studio.

OMG YESSSS!!!

The best JRPG of the 6th generation, just go to youtube and listen to the tracks and the next thing you will find yourself doing is starting the game.

You own it to yourself to experience this masterpiece of a JRPG.

Yes.
I loved Xenogears (duh), I quite enjoyed Xenosaga and when I played XS2 I was greatly disappointed. I thought that I would never play XS3 but then (many years later) I went back and watched all the cutscenes from 1 and 2 and read some wiki summaries and then played 3... It was totally worth it, XS3 is miles ahead of the other XS games and one of the finest JRPGs I have ever played.

So don't think too much.. if you 're up for it then just do it and you can thank me later :).

I would buy it since I really liked the first one, but even I will admit that playing Xenosaga is about 3/4 watching anime and 1/4 playing a game. The gameplay changes from game to game (and the voices!) was kind of random and jarring though.

That's how it felt for me. It wasn't very fun..

I kind of wish the battle system in Xenosaga was more like Star Ocean.

I love the Star Ocean battle system, but it's not something I think Xenosaga should have had since I like that each series has it's own style. If they had small variations of Xenosaga III's combat, it would have been fine. It still used the break and knock down systems, but in a better way.

The only problem with III's combat was how they removed speed as an equation, or at least lowered it's effects. Like how a faster weaker character would have more turns than a slower heavy hitter. But instead of one continuous battle system based using speeds to determine how often someone had a tuen, they seperated each turn into seperate rounds and simply decided who would come first on that occasion.

So someone like Ziggy got a buff because it didn't matter if he was slow since he'd still have the same amount of turns as everyone else albeit later, while faster characters from the first two games lost their advantage

The game was so long that I can't even remember why this happened, but I remember Shion was a nerdy-plucky girl with glasses in Episode I, but then by Episode III she was kind of a jerkass and looked like fashion model wearing those tsundere stockings.

YESSS!!!

I can't believe I'm actually hearing about this news. Xenosaga is one of my favorite series and Xenosaga 3 is one of my favorite games on PS2!

Yeah the combat system sounds... funky. I guess it will be interesting to see it in action, but 5+ minute trash mob fights sounds absolutely horrible. Hearing that alone shows me why people wouldn't care much for 2.

This is what we can expect ( hopefully ) if we ever get the HD collection, Xenosaga Ep I

Yeah, that about sums up Shion. She's unbearable in Episode III (which is sad since it's easily the best game of the three and the only one I'd ever want to replay).
