Hard racing games that you actually finished...

All this talk about F-Zero GX. I'm not sure if I've ever actually played it (though I think I may have). Is it worth throwing on my Gamefly queue?

And to answer this thread, I found Diddy Kong Racing to be the hardest to beat. Just got it for my DS, I'm hoping it's an exact port. (Also hoping they release it on VC)
No.

I'd be like reading the second chapter of a 10-chapter book. You just won't play it the same way as if you own it. It's a game that you can only get good at by playing, not a game that you can "check out" or "try" by playing it a couple of times.

If you invest the time and effort into it, the rewards are unparalleled. If you give it a quick spin, you'll be disappointed.

Pretty much none of them. I play racing games for a bit but quit after a while when they become too repetitive . . . doing the same races just trying to shave off a second or so.

+1 for my theory that Mario Kart players don't actually like racing games and those series aren't made for those who do like racing games.

I don't usually see racing games (or any game without a story really) as something I have to finish, unless it can be done in one sitting. I usually just play to as far as I can get until I'm bored. Of all the hundreds of games I've played and beaten, I honestly don't think I've ever finished a racing game. Wow...

I saved and saved and saved my lunch money back in junior high to buy Hard Drivin' for Genesis. I had a less frustrating time counting out the single dollar bills and quarters for the store clerk than I had playing that piece, but I did beat that fucking computer racer.

Stuntman (the first one)...that game was F'n ridiculous :P tho, i did pick up the new stuntman game, will have to make my way through that one at some point ;)

play PGR2 and beat it.

i think every nintendo fan has come here claiming f zero.

The third mission of story mode on the normal difficulty level took me about two hours.

The game is haaaaard. I've probably played the game for at least 80 hours or so and I stilll haven't unlocked the AX tracks or gone beyond normal in the story mode.

I usually don't finish racing games, i just have fun racing. I finished zone mode in wipeout pure but thats easy, never did finish unlocking all the speeds because I played too much add on content trying to fill the grids from slow up. When I get HD i'll try to fully finish it before getting any add-ons.

The Original Wipeout. It only gave you 3 continues and the last track was Silverstream!! FAAAK!! it was hard, and getting full points unlocked Firestar on Mars. Total Awesomeness.
Paul Jackson :bow

NFSMW: Those bloody side challenges were hard and time consuming, i battled on and finished it to 100% though.

Motorstorm. Wasn't really hard, but apparently a lot of people found it hard.
Buggy race on Messa was probably the only real hard ticket, but the tension which built up on the final stretch after the U turn all the way to clipping a rock on the final corner and just managing to cross the finishing line = most satisfying moment in gaming history.
Ah yeah, on the first speed I got up to silverstream fairly fast then I had a huge dummy moment of why it was so hard, I didn't load my save file so my air brakes were on the wrong buttons the whole time...

F-Zero GX made me it's bitch. God damn that game was hard, but bloody brilliant. Without a doubt one of the greatest racing games of all time. EGM's review from back then still makes my blood boil.

I guess the hardest racing game I ever finished completely was Wave Race: Blue Storm. I finished Diddy Kong completely back in the day, but I didn't think it was so much hard as it was just a lot of work. I even unlocked that stupid Clock.

Futuristic racing games are my favorite, so they're most of what I think of...

I beat F-Zero GX's story mode on Normal... hardest racing game I ever finished, I think. That was far, far harder than beating F-Zero X's cups in Master difficulty. That was hard too, but not as hard as GX's story mode in Normal.

Hmm... Extreme-G 2 (the final challenge, where you need to finish every race in first place) was very difficult too... finishing the final four tracks of that (because it only saves every four races so fail one and you restart the four-race segment from the beginning) was really hard...

Ridge Racer (64 or R4) are hard too, but that seems more just cruel frustration than anything else. Wipeout is really hard. XL and 64 aren't quite as hard as the original, but they're very challenging too (Sokana Time Trial...). Wipeout 3 is kind of insane difficulty wise, and is maybe the hardest game in the franchise...

Of course for real challenge there's nothing that matches up to serious (PC) sim racers, but I don't play those much, mostly because they're just to hard to learn to really be worth it for me.

F-Zero GX on the master difficulty.

Nothing comes close.

Stunt Race FX on the snes, surprised it hasn't been mentioned yet...(partially because of the framerate) and a timer is one of the most evil things you can have in a racing game; you might be in first place, yet, "time's up!" :(

Another F-Zero GX guy here

Grand Prix mode was amazingly fun on all difficulties, but screw Story Mode. That was just sadistic and memorization-based.

Metal Gear soild 2 on extreme with game over when seen! OMFG was it hard.
The hardest part in particular was fighting vamp the second time( in the little room with a pool he dove in) I had 20% health no rations so I had to kill him with C4!:D lol

Fail.

first game that comes to mind is need for speed most wanted. those last pursuit challanges were boring, long and hard.

need for speed III was quite difficult on hard

stuntman is also a pain in the ass. i've finished after some years that i had lefted collecting dust.

if i recall, colin mcrae 2 on PS was also difficult if you played on hard. i remember the last 11 stages on the UK... it was quite the challenge.

In general I suck at racers, but probably my pride and joy is slogging through the entirety of MSR. I adored the game, too.

PGR's never felt quite the same for me.

Well, aside from the most popular response so far....I'd say as far as 'hard and rewarding' World Driver Championship on the N64...some of the best racer AI in a game ever, great tracks, and some grueling races.

I hate you all for not playing it.

Rage Racer, for me. Having said that, I remembered this USENET post from a while back (ok, 9 years ago...memory not dead yet!).

Dude completes Rage Racer with a digital pad.

That alway struck me as awesome hardcore.

I managed to finally beat Rage Racer with a standard controller. I first completed the game without worrying about gold trophies, then I went back and placed first on each and every class. Acquiring all gold trophies in every class took some doing, but perserverance paid off. Someone here (Usenet) once had said that he thought the only way to beat this game was with an analog controller, and ever since then I have had it in my mind that I was going to beat it using a digital controller.
To those who are stuck in class six-- do not despair. The game is beatable (though it would probably be wise to master it using a NeGcon controller as opposed to the caveman tool I was using!)

Oh, he's easy, just burn a nitro immediately after the last corner.

Beating Wizpig was hard.
:lol So true - I forgot all about that but I felt great when I finally beat Diddy Kong Racing.

The hardest thing I've done lately is try to get near the top of the online leaderboards on some tracks on DiRT - I don't know how some of these bastards are so quick but I have to work on these tracks for hours to get even within 10-20 seconds of their times.

Wreckless: The Yakuza Missions :D

Not TERRIBLY hard, but really enjoyed the game and had great graphics for its time.

dont know about hard but heres all i can remember
motorstorm, all golds
mario kart ds, all golds
nfs carbon, every race
nfs hot pursuit 2, think everything but a few cars
gt3, not done but im proud to be half way through hard races:D
crazy taxi 2, need the last mission

When people say they finished the GT games, did you get all golds or are you talking about 100%?

Motorstorm is not in the same league as that, as far as difficulty goes.

F1CE with all damage, weather, tyre and fuel settings on is another galaxy of difficulty compared to anything I have ever played. 1 mistake and it's over. Try finishing all the World Championship Races (Full lenght races) in 1st.

For me Wipeout's were hardest, it's just reaction time in that game and nothing else. 2097 was the last Wipeout I finished.

I finished most of F-Zero GX. Only Chapter 7, Very Hard remains unbeaten in Story Mode along with a couple of Master cups in Grand Prix. I'd like to go back to it and finish the Grand Prix stuff, at the very least. I think the Master Class stuff is probably the most difficult thing I've ever played (that doesn't feel cheap or broken).

F-Zero GX

wtf FZero GX? That game was cake.

did you beat all the story chapters on very hard? if you did and you call it cake then i bow down to you because it was the death of me and when i beat it i felt damn satisfied.

Ridge Racer 6 - Completed Xplorer mode
Diddy Kong Racing - Got TT. Beat the game on normal. Failed to beat some of the silver coin challenges in mirror mode. Greenwood Village was one of the two I couldn't get, I think.

Also, I tried to play P.O.D. (Planet of Death) and I failed miserably. I doubt I got much past the first few races.

Another vote for F-Zero GX here. I'm counting this as I did beat Story Mode, although not 100% including all the harder difficulties. I did beat quite a few of them on Very Hard, but the rest just broke me. I could barely finish Chapter 7 on Normal as it was.

Anyways, it's an amazing game and totally worth picking up as long as you're ready for a challenge. Probably my favourite racing game of last gen.

+1 for F-Zero GX: all cups on all difficulties, around half of the ending movies unlocked, and a little over half of the Very Hard story chapters. (2, 3, 4, 6, and 8.) Like everybody else can testify to, the game is 100% awesome. Possibly more than that.

I think what's more likely is that he beat all the basic easy chapters and declared himself king of Nintendo.
