I guess I haven't been paying attention---why wasn't it compatible out of the box, I know the scuttlebutt at one time was the RB would support GH guitars, but not vice versa? Why does this apply specifically to the PS3 version but not the 360 version?

I posted my hypothesis, and I'm betting it's right.

Hey idiots, this is business, thereby rendering all criticism and discussion moot.
:lol Yes. This is business, so we should just be good little sheep and continue along our merry way.

And RedOctane started by making unofficial third party controllers, right?

Hypocritical fuckwits.

I'd hold off on bitching. I think this is all Activision this time, NOT Red Octane, who in emails said to contact Activision.

So let me get this straight.

Guitar Hero 3 owners that own the 360 version can use that guitar to play Rockband for the 360.

But Guitar Hero 3 owners that have the PS3 version are now more or less fucked if they want to use that guitar with PS3 Rockband because Activison is being a bunch of fucking pricks...

So Activison hates Sony now all of a sudden?
More like Activision stops compatibility when it can. In this case, Sony had no previous guitar to test, so they can block this patch.

This only makes sense for Activision. Sony is really the one we should be saying "fuck you" to.

yeah, shame on sony for not releasing the PS3 earlier.... FOR SHAME, FU SONY...

Someone on the Rock Band forums said this:

I don't know if this is true, but it sounds scary enough to be.

I doubt it, since the patch to disable it would have to come from Harmonix/EA, and in this case they aren't the ones who yielded to Activision, Sony is. They still wrote/submitted the patch to make it compatible despite Activision's objections

Hopping on the Fuck Activision bandwagon makes you an individual.

Business is business. EA/Harmonix certainly shouldn't have banked on the competition to provide the necessary accessory to make standalone copies of Rock Band playable.
exactly.

Gigglepoo said:
My friends and I never use the standard Rock Band guitar because it sucks pretty hard.

Really? I much prefer the Rockband guitar over the GH3 one, granted I've only played both games at kiosks but the RB one just feels more comfortable to me...

Bububu RB guitar doesn't work with GH!!!1!

I've gotta agree with Activision though, business is business. Why help the competitor?

Before anyone says it makes Activision money, the GH3 guitars aren't on sale separately until January anyway so they don't profit from it, unless people where willing to spend $100 for a bass guitar.

What they're doing is hurting relations with their fans, something that can't be considered good business no matter how you spin it.

Bad move Activision.

Haha... Just fucking bought GH3 for the PS3 as well.

Big fat fuck you Activision. Just fucking spiteful.

No more Guitar Heroes for me.

Will do then.

Either way, seems as if it's a bad move. Surely this would sell more GH3/GH PS3 controllers?

Alphahawk said:
Doesn't Activision relise that this allowing this patch to go through would actually make them money?

Don't you realise that companies don't usually make you buy a controller that works specifically with their game. Why, I hope in the future I have to get different controllers to play Mario, Zelda and Mario Kart because it makes more business sense!

Yeah, they'd have to release a GHIII patch that somehow messed with RB's code. Which would just be unimaginably forward of them.

Although I suppose they could put out a mandatory firmware patch to those guitars. Which would of course ensure that many people never play GHII or III again.

Neo Child said:
This doesn't make sense.

Surely allowing old guitars to work with new ones would block out people BUYING ROCK BAND GUITARS, not GH3 guitars, as they don't need to purchase new ones. Thus the ball being in Activisions court, odd...
It's a bigger advantage to rock band to be compatible with guitars people already have than it is to activision to sell more of them. They don't want rock band to succeed, or at least not to be making guitars that contribute to its success.

Activision will prevent the rock band from working with the older guitars whenever they can. They were probably unable to do so with the 360 version, but sony is bowing to them because they need all the 3rd party support they can get.

You mean the fans that said "fuck GH, RB ftw"?

They're the only ones that will research this out to know what's happened here. Average consumer will plug in a GH guitar to play Rock Band, see it doesn't work, and say oh well, better buy a RB guitar.

Activision: Stop the Les Paul and X-Plorer from working in Rock Band or we'll sue.

HMX: OK!

Word of mouth made Guitar Hero popular. Word of mouth made Rock Band a success far beyond simply being considered a knock-off. Have faith in the fans of the game knowing how to spread this news.

Its not possible, the 360 buttons are all standard, you can't change them without breaking the rock band guitar

The problem is that it once worked. And XBL always asks if you want to download a particular patch. People would just never download it.

Activision sucks for doing this, but it is actually a really smart move to combat Rock Band. Activision may have been fine with the patch going though until they, along with everyone else, realized what a piece of shit the RB guitar is. Why bail out RB with a good guitar when they can let the brand hurt itself with shoddy peripherals?

Still a dick move.

*cough*

:lol

Now I wonder is the rumor Shane B. mentioned on 1UP Yours is true (that Activision are actively attempting to also stop the 360 controllers from working with Rock Band).

booo Activision. booo to Sony for kowtowing to it as well.

I still don't see how any of the blame lies on Sony's doorstep. They were only unlucky enough to not have the code already in Harmonix's hands thanks to their work on GHII.

They already pissed off PS3 owners by not allowing there own fucking guitars to work with GHI and GHII when played on the PS3 or with GHIII. This just puts the nail in the coffin.

It kind of sucks, and while it makes senese in business terms it is still a dick move on their part. It really wont affect them at all seeing as how GH is a main stream series and what we say means jackshit. Harmonix and Rock Band so far has been good to the fans, first with an actual practical solution for DLC songs and quick support for guitar problems, and when they were trying to help out PS3 owners they got shot down.

EA and Harmonix should really just try to rush out the solo guitars in stores now, even quicker than the 360 versions if they can.

It also helps that Rock Band is a quantumload much better than GH3.

"To go online with Rock Band or use the new DLC, you must have the latest version of the game. V 0.90"

"The patch remains with Sony, but we have been told that it will unfortunately not be released due to Activision's continued objection."
that's why some of the blame lies with Sony. Sony have the patch that makes it work, and are sitting on it because Activision are asking them too.

I'm confused. Can anyone think of any legality that dictates a company can not write code so some fucking plastic controller works with their game?

I'm quite sure they are, as there is currently a version on the shelves that is 99% unplayable.

And Shane's bonkers. As has been stated, there's no way Harmonix can definitively keep people with Rock Band 360 from not using the guitars that already work.

I was commenting on his straight forward perception of this situation. He claims that since this is business, it is a moot issue and we should all move along like nothing is happening. Basically he thinks we should all be sheep and accept this issue. I, and others, say fuck that. I would hardly call it a bandwagon. I would call it a group of individuals that have an issue with a publisher's descision.

Well, that sounds pretty grey, to be honest. We have no idea what the stakes are for them. The fact is that they wouldn't be in this predicament at all if there had been a GHII released for PS3. That seems all but obvious now.

wtf @ activision ... it's like they want to lose money ???

pretty sure some people would pick up GH3 so they can have another guitar for rock band

hopefully this brings the music game genre that much closer to death

That is complete crap I own the 360 but still that is just wrong. I could not imagine having to have to play rock band with the horrible strat. EA/HX can help fix this by atleast releasing a clicky strum bar guitar. I did not like GH3 anyway so I would gladly join in a boycott of GH4 until they allow a patch. I never thought I would be happy about MS iron fist control over periferals.

I have never been so pissed/dissapointed with a gaming company in any other moment in my life. Seriously, Activision are being complete idiots. They could've actually made a lot of money by having it compatable.

They have no right blocking this patch. Fuck this. Fuck Activision. They aren't making any money off of me anytime soon. Fuckers are lucky my Dad bought GH3 under the pretense that the guitar would work with RB. They aren't making any DLC purchases off me, that's for damn sure.

I was considering guitar hero 3 when I get my financial aid check, but now......nope.

I yearn for the days before we had to boycott companies for their shitty agendas, and it was all about just playing some fucking games.

what? Here, let me explain it very slowly for you.

1) Harmonix wants to satisfy customers to make more money. They want older controllers to work with rock band.
2) Activision has a product that directly competes with rock band, and doesn't want rock band compatible with their controllers. They ask sony to intervene.
3) Sony has no balls here, so they bow to activision.

In the above scenario, if you are disappointed in the outcome (which you should be, it's bad for consumers) then you should be blaming sony. Activision's actions are completely normal and reasonable.

If the above scenario is not what is happening, please clarify for me.

They better not succeed in disabling support for the 360 version, I hate the rock band guitar and I plan on buying a 360 copy of rock band soon.

They can't piss off Activision. C'mon, you have more sense then that. Their series are far too important to even risk having an issue with.
