Has a consoles look ever been a factor for you?

Nope, it could be a boomerang or a giant orb I don't care.

Handhelds though I care a lot about design. I have to know if i can fit in my pocket and if it looks good enough to show off at people.
Nintendo plz make darker 3DSXL color for USA :(

Xbox

The original Xbox was a behemoth that never won any awards for its design, it's probably the only console in history capable of killing someone if you tossed it to them at floor level. It was constantly mocked because of the design and weight but it was a pretty reliable system for being Microsoft's first piece of hardware.

It was a midget compared to the Atari 5200...

But aesthetics usually don't bother me much, unless it comes to a cost of the hardware. Like the original XBox 360 for example... it suffered from a lot of heating issues because of its poor thermal dynamics due to the consoles form factor. Something that was solved in later revisions, but it was still very problematic very early on. The original XBox may have looked bulky in comparison, but at least it was really sound hardware.

I hope you've grown up since then ;)

Yeah, I was like 15 or something... And nobody wants to be the 15 year old who's purple videogame console has a lunchbox handle on it. Almost 30 now. Although, to be honest, I care a lot more about the look of my entertainment system setup now than I did when I was 15 or 16... If the next X-Box or PS4 were gaudy, hideous consoles that lacked any design sense like the OG Xbox, I'd still get one, but I might hide it away off to the side somewhere instead of having it front and center.

For a home console? Usually no. As long as it's not some purple or pink machine (or any color that isn't black or white)... I don't care.

I never bought an original Xbox, primarily due to a lack of games that interested me, but I also thought it looked bad which may have factored into it a little bit.

I thought the Gamecube looked like a stupid children's toy at the time and hated that its primary available colour was purple, but I was a teenager at the time which comes with a lot of pointless and uninformed prejudices.

Amusingly enough, purple has become one of my favourite colours since then.

Not really, but I loved the original PlayStation, the Japanese Sega Mega-Drive (best "16-BIT" lettering) and the Super Famicom (best button colouring and shape v US version and best lettering v PAL version). Gamecube was really neat too.

Are people really that shallow? Now that everything is wireless you can put a bag over it if you need to.

It wouldn't influence a buying decision for me, but it's not shallow to like to have a consistent look or a specific aesthetic in your rooms, devices, etc. Look at the design of ultrabooks, MacBooks, and the Chrome Pixel... Aesthetics are important. Same with the desire to hide wires, or have a TV with a small bezel, etc.

There's a reason LG doesn't release this hideous TV anymore

I feel like I'd be more inclined to buy nintendo handhelds if they didn't look so much like toys.

But honestly, I just don't have time for any other game platform than what I have with my pc and my steam backlog.

It isn't, and shouldn't be, a decisive factor, but we don't tolerate what we think are ugly devices as consumers unless there's a tremendous performance and price advantage, do we? I love OS X and I appreciate that my Mac is well made, but does the outer appearance make me like the device more, and does it make me more likely to buy another Apple product when the time comes? I suppose it does. Pointing to a post above, LG makes better televisions, and more aesthetically distinct televisions, and their market share improves. I'd imagine their reliability and model performance improved over time, but people who spent money on those things didn't ignore their desire to want something to look at.

I like the box to look unique, so I can look at it and say "Oh, yeah, I got me one of those..." right after launch. But otherwise, I don't really care that much. The point about not actually looking at the thing very often is very true.

To date, I haven't really been disappointed by any of them. I've never looked at a system and said "that looks stupid" (they all look cool in their own way, IMO), or based a purchase decision on the look of the console itself rather than its content.

No, never the look of the actual console.
But I'm seriously thinking of not getting the next Xbox if Kinect is mandatory, and they haven't scaled it down to at least a fourth of the current size. That panel would totally destroy the aesthetics of my gaming setup.

I would never buy a console (or not buy) just because of its looks

that being said i was super pissed when the bright orange gamecube didn't get a US release

still am, twelve years later

The console's design doesn't really matter to me, but the color does. Black is the way it should always be. Never, ever, ever, ever, should it be white.

Not really.

I do have to say for last gen, one of the reasons that I wanted a PS2 was because it looked better than the other ones. But it was just a very small part in my decision.

Never been a factor as far as purchase. I think the fat and grill PS3s and the Xbox 360 Slim are ugly though.

I remember knocking my Gamecube down by accident while playing Wave Race Blue Storm from maybe three or four feet (onto carpet) but I was amazed that the game never froze or went ape-shit. The disc was fine. No harm done.

I care far too much aesthetically about most things. And I certainly covet rare and beautiful versions of existing systems. For instance I really want a green Hatsune Miku PSP and a pink PlayStation 2.

However, I can't imagine a system ugly enough for me to not want it. Perhaps it sounds a bit cliche, but I love games. If it's so ugly, I can compensate for it with other decorations. Or find a way to customize it to look better.

One of the ugliest systems I've ever seen is the Atari Jaguar and the original XBOX. The original XBOX looks pretty cheezy. Like the people from Gak were involved in creating it. But that doesn't stop me from wanting one. If at least for the rare version of Fatal Frame II with XBOX exclusive content.

I guess. Lately I stay far away from consoles with the words Nintendo, or Wii/u written on them.

What can I say? I'm bigoted towards Uppercase N's and W's.

It doesn't really matter but Sony definitely should have shown it.

Why? What would they have shown you at E3? They got people talking about their system, so mission accomplished. Hype machine in effect for their E3 reveal. Had they shown it, who would even bother with their E3 show?

The only thing that matters is what name is on the logo. If it's the right name, I'll convince myself it looks awesome.

So you do care then.

In other news I am glad so many other people are horrified at the looks of the original XBOX. It isn't the reason I didn't buy one. But my gosh if it didn't help the decision. Being big, heavy, and ugly, and having no jRPGs pretty well killed the interest for me. If I were to buy a second system, it most certainly would have been a Gamecube.

And for that other terrible looking system I mentioned.

What on earth were Atari thinking? This thing looks ridiculous. The best thing I can say about it is that it looks like a DoDonPachi boss ship.

Colors sure. I prefer black consoles, just because they look nice and blend in with other gadgets I have.

Form factor hasn't even come to my mind. Not even Gamecube. I was too much focused on what I got to play next.

I mean it does make your gaming area look pretty but I think I mostly just consider the games that I'll be able to play on it, and the way it runs. Not necessarily the way it looks.

I bought the cube once the black model was out, so sometimes colour will delay me buying one.

I thought the original xbox was too big but after playing one and seeing some of the games I bought it anyway, glad I did.

My slim 360 is annoying and reflective, my brothers is the matte finish one and I prefer it so much more but eh.

I wanted a ps1 slim when they first came out as I had the older grey model, shoudl get around to ebay and buying one finally.

Not to mention the CD add-on made it look like a toilet :
