I like it when game consoles have a unique identity, just because it's more memorable. I'd prefer more customizations, rather than being so worked up over initial design, though.
The Wii and Wii U are 2 of the most boring things I've ever seen. They look like designs for portable Hard Drives. The screen gives the Wii U some personality, though.
PSGrill is just... eh. Am I suppose to think it's bulking up at the seams with power? Or maybe it's just a way to keep from stacking things on top of it... I probably like the PS1 era stuff best with Sony, because they felt more like they had identity. I liked the XMB on PSP, and I like what some themes do with it on PS3, but on it's own, it's incredibly boring.
I kinda like the 360's Hybrid PC/Console look, though I mostly just like the Iconic X. I like the way it's pulled through all the designs of the systems UI and such. Feels "Gamey", just like how adding "Super" to everything on SNES was campy but memorable.
NES was a nice bit of form and function. SNES and Gamecube's use of color added some fun to the hardware.
I like the look of the Master System when I was young. I like the Genesis, reminds me of something that could easily have drop out of 80s anime. Dreamcast might be my favorite all around, but that's probably because PSO proved the design was great looking as a Mag.
TG16 looked like a Master system in too many ways, lol. Orange was a nice punch, but that's about it.
I loved my Bulky Atari Lynx. Neo Geo Pocket is my favorite "smaller" portable. Loved the UI, loved the blue optional designs, loved it's screen and clicky pad. I don't find the DS comfortable.
Vita looks great to me. It feels sleek, the bubbles remind me of PS1 and Saturn music players, and the deeper integration of it's apps and such feel like a step beyond the PS3. It feels unique and game-like, again.
I never decided on buying a system purely on design. But a design that has a theme that runs through all software and hardware for the brand does stick with me longer, because it makes me feel less like I'm just playing "a soulless PC that happens to run games", and more like a unique platform that attracts games and creators of a certain type to it, that fit their own ways and personality. A relic of being a 90's gamer, eh...
