Has a consoles look ever been a factor for you?

I've never thought about it. As for the mass-market consumer, I'm sure they would. Home-style and all that junk.

In retrospect, I love the lunch-box. PAL SNES/Famicom is a thing of beauty too. But it was never a factor in my actual purchase decision.

Not to mention the CD add-on made it look like a toilet :

LOL

So fun to look at old tech and old 'fashion' in general :)

The PS2 slim has such a timeless & sleek feeling to it. Still one of my favourites.

Yes, I like good designs. I hate the ps3 old and new slims so I don't own a ps3 eventhough I would like one. I can't stand looking at something that looks cheap. I also once bought a 360s cause of looks + upgrades unlike ps3 slims with each one getting downgrades. I make sure eveything I buy has a nice design just cause of the cool factor.

The physical appearance of a console has not been a factor in my decision to purchase one, except for maybe the original Gameboy, but that had a bit more to do with the lack of games that interested me. Plus, I couldn't afford to buy one at the time anyway.I ended up buying a Gameboy Pocket instead during middle school mainly due to the release of Pokemon Red/Blue.

The original DS was ugly, but I avoided getting one due to the lack of games that interested me, and also because I was saving my money toward the purchase of the Nintendo's next home console first. I bought a DS Lite more so it because of its updated features, but it was nice that it looked more sleek and modern ( but in terms of ergonimics, DS Lite wasn't that comfortable to hold and I also was not a fan of the flat shoulder buttons) If I could afford it, I would have considered possibly buying a PS3, but in terms of its appearance, all of the models look ugly to me.

Generally, a console that's ugly isn't so bad so long as it offers improved features.

Yes, but only recently. I didnt care when my parents bought my consoles. Now, I'm not buying a 3ds until they have colors that aren't for 5 year olds. I also hate piano block on anything. I bought a 360 slim arcade and put my own HDD in it just to have the matte color.

The SNES looks bad and the n64 looks worse. I think the GameCube looks better now looking back than it did at the time though.

Maybe with handhelds, since how they look can determine how they actually function in your hands (meaning, the ergonomics).

But outside of that, no. I don't care how good looking or ugly a console is. It's just going to sit by the TV. I care more about how it runs.

I'm all about aesthetics. That's why I have an AV Famicom and Super Famicom under my TV and not a NES or US SNES. I got a white LL for the sex appeal, ditto Game Boy Micro. Of-course they are all also amazing games machines.

Hasn't happened yet but if the 720 actually looked like this:

The specs would have to 100% floor me before I'd be willing to drop the cash, where the hell would I even put that monstrosity?

Has it ever been a factor? Sure. The original Xbox was so damn ugly that it made me hesitate. I ended buying it anyway because I really wanted to play Halo. But yeah, it was a small factor.

The only time i would consider NOT buying a console because of its looks it would be i f they made it transparent.
Thank God it's not the 90's anymore.

No way.

The GameCube is the most awesome-looking console ever, though.

Looks are really important when we're tlking about handhelds, though. It's the reason why I quickly sold my original 3DS to buy the XL.

Absolutely not.

Also, this is my favorite console design. Maybe it's rose-colored glasses, but I think it's just beautiful.

This minimal/functional design really factored into my purchase decision (for the first and the last time). I imagined myself just sticking it into my pocket and going over to friends to play (surprisingly happened far fewer times than I had imagined ;).
It all went down the drains after that im ironic o ...

No. but when i have a choise between a black or white or other colour console i choose what fits the colour-style of my home.

I can't think of anything I care less about in all of gaming. It has no factor in how I play my games or how they're made, that's what the insides of the console are for.

Nope, the OG DS barely looked better than a Game & Watch and I bought it.

I can say that Gamecube being so tiny was a nice thing to have given my cramped setup.

The only impact the look had was certain versions of consoles made me wish I had those instead, either because they looked way sexier or crossed the threshold of looking like a toy to looking like serious piece of hardware.

Case in point:

1st time I saw a drawing of the new Sega Genesis in the very 1st issue of EGM, I knew I would buy that thing. It still looks really cool.

The look of the Vita really helped with my purchase. I used to tease my friends about having an XBOX because it was so big and ugly. When I got one with XBOX Live and Mech Assault 2, I was so happy that I didn't skip out on it.

Nope never cared about it, and because of this Im pretty surprised by the outcry with the PS4.

Who cares how the damn console looks.

I like it when game consoles have a unique identity, just because it's more memorable. I'd prefer more customizations, rather than being so worked up over initial design, though.

The Wii and Wii U are 2 of the most boring things I've ever seen. They look like designs for portable Hard Drives. The screen gives the Wii U some personality, though.

PSGrill is just... eh. Am I suppose to think it's bulking up at the seams with power? Or maybe it's just a way to keep from stacking things on top of it... I probably like the PS1 era stuff best with Sony, because they felt more like they had identity. I liked the XMB on PSP, and I like what some themes do with it on PS3, but on it's own, it's incredibly boring.

I kinda like the 360's Hybrid PC/Console look, though I mostly just like the Iconic X. I like the way it's pulled through all the designs of the systems UI and such. Feels "Gamey", just like how adding "Super" to everything on SNES was campy but memorable.

NES was a nice bit of form and function. SNES and Gamecube's use of color added some fun to the hardware.

I like the look of the Master System when I was young. I like the Genesis, reminds me of something that could easily have drop out of 80s anime. Dreamcast might be my favorite all around, but that's probably because PSO proved the design was great looking as a Mag.

TG16 looked like a Master system in too many ways, lol. Orange was a nice punch, but that's about it.

I loved my Bulky Atari Lynx. Neo Geo Pocket is my favorite "smaller" portable. Loved the UI, loved the blue optional designs, loved it's screen and clicky pad. I don't find the DS comfortable.

Vita looks great to me. It feels sleek, the bubbles remind me of PS1 and Saturn music players, and the deeper integration of it's apps and such feel like a step beyond the PS3. It feels unique and game-like, again.

I never decided on buying a system purely on design. But a design that has a theme that runs through all software and hardware for the brand does stick with me longer, because it makes me feel less like I'm just playing "a soulless PC that happens to run games", and more like a unique platform that attracts games and creators of a certain type to it, that fit their own ways and personality. A relic of being a 90's gamer, eh...

In terms of purchasing decisions, of course not.

But in terms of something to react to, comment about, and judge? Of course.

This. There's a reason people in the pre-conference Sony thread were talking about how they wanted it to look, even coming up with their own mockups. People want to love the look of the console, and be blown away by it. It was a boner killer for some that at a console reveal there was no console revealed. Personally I've only made decisions based on looks when it comes to the color of a handheld, and once or twice bought a console because it was a limited edition.

Nope. Not really. I don't sit and stare at it. I barely look at my console when switching discs, haha.

I do care that it is designed well and dissipates heat well and all that jazz.

Nope I bought an Xbox OG.

As long as it brings the games.

Would I prefer it to look like the PS2? Of course, but it won't stop me from buying it.

A console's appearance has never stopped me from buying one, but sometimes it does make me want it more. Case in point:

OUYA-Transparenty.png

... that reminds me of a pencil sharpner. Or a paper shredder. Unique for a game console, but it feels like something I'd glance at in a Sharper Image...

No, it's always about the games. But I do appreciate a good looking console. The Super Famicom/European SNES, for example, is quite a lovely little device, certainly much better looking than the grey block that is the American SNES.

Favourite consoles or console editions would be the Dreamcast, white Saturn, N64, black Wii U, silver GameCube, PSOne and the Amiga CD32. Least favourites would be the PS2 (it looks like an 80's car radio from the front), first edition slim PS3 (ugh), X-Box and original version Xbox 360, first edition Megadrive and the Atari 5200 and 7800.
