Has a game's visuals completely repelled you from playing it?

Borderlands (especially the cover art)

Minecraft blocky crap

Bastion/Transistor - I still purchased Bastion on iOS due to the rave reviews... i played it for about 5 minutes before I turned it off.

Conversely -

I really love the look of Xenoblade Chronicles X, Oreshika: Bloodlines and Bloodborne.

Mass Effect - There was no whimsy or charm to its design... just generic sci-fi mixed with too much realism.
Revolution 60 - Early 90's CGI meets Early 80's Hentai. Even Reboot had a better sense of style.
Oblivion - I tried it at a friend's house and couldn't create a player that didn't look like a bloated carcass. I typically REALLY enjoy character creation, too.

Super Meat Boy and especially Binding of Isaac have a pretty gross aesthetic that turns me off. They're like rummaging through a garbage can.

Yeah, I'm not a fan of anything that screams, "I was made in Flash, and I never figured out my tablet's pressure settings!" I tried Super Meat Boy and sort of enjoyed it, but skipped Isaac because I thoought, "Nah, I don't want to see anymore of that."

The more that games strive for photo-realism, the less I'm interested in playing them. I'd rather watch a film instead.

This rule applies for me, too.

Final Fantasy VII

Coming from the nice-looking sprites of FF6, 7's awful ugly polygon characters were such a shock that it killed my passion for the franchise.

Oddworld. All of them. So hideous. Couldn't stand to look at them since I was a kid.

I stopped playing Oblivion for lots of reasons, and one of them was how much I hated looking at all of the characters.

The art of Skullgirls turns me off but I still plan to actually play it one of these days.

Mortal Kombat 9 and especially Injustice. Injustice is particularly egregious because superheroes are usually so colourful and vibrant. Nether Realm games look like they're smeared with dirt.

And I'll throw in another vote for Super Meat Boy and The Binding of Isaac. It's like they think that making their games ugly on purpose means they don't have to try as hard.

I hate saying it, but I'd be suckered into DLC.

*GASP* I did not know this existed. This is fantastic.

I guess only fans of the 80s cartoons can enjoy the style,

Or people who have managed to avoid having that art style ruined for them by creepy furry porn.

The visuals in Megaman Legends put me off of it for awhile and the same goes for Megaman Zero. I was very, very wrong to do that with both. Megaman 8 on the other hand..results are more mixed.

You can make you own "not so ugly" face you know? They just happen to use the worst one as an example. Though I agree that the character models in XenoX are quite a horrid.

They change the design. Depends on what you like the new ones could be better(or worse).

My choice would be stuff like Dragons Crown. And Binding of Isaac, I usually don't hate that style but this one just hit my hate button or something.

VVVVVV pisses me off to look at. I hate that smiling asshole stick figure that took all of 5 seconds to create. Could be a great game, I'll never know. A retro aesthetic does not excuse laziness.

Oh there is definitely a large portion of Gaffers that do that. There isn't a visual art style that repels me, but a genre. I don't like the eroge stuff or whatever its called. That stuff that rarely leaves japan with the upskirt stuff and virtual boyfriend/girlfriend stuff. I loathe it, and the terribly written anime shows that they seem to mimic.

Jesus Christ I am not going to be able to read this thread. My blood pressure is going to spike through the roof reading some of this stuff.

Xenoblade X, as much as I try to get used to the faces they just increasingly become more and more a tough bullet to swallow.

It's a far cry from how Xenosaga looked, and a huge step in the wrong direction from Xenoblade Chronicles.

I still am looking forward to this game despite how the characters look. I think the environments look amazing.

I'm kinda proud of myself for not letting that be a thing for me. My best friend is super visually oriented though and gets repelled a lot if it's not to his taste. I feel kinda sad for people like that, you really are missing out in a lot of cases.

I have a hard time getting over shitty animu sprites in low poly 3D environments.

Ys, Recettear, that kind of stuff. Really ugly.

Someone hating on Grow Home. This is why these threads usually end in tears, and bans.

What the hell is that. Star Ocean 4? Who the heck modeled that thing? Yuck
Character creator in Xenoblade Chronicles X for WiiU. I'd say I'm sure people will be able to create a good face, but I haven't seen one yet in all the pre-release footage.

This is basically it. Kinda makes me want to avoid GAF all together, honestly. Some posts saying a game looks hideous just because of the characters for instance... no names mentioned.

Anyways, I think Lao is pretty sweet.

Minacraft and Darksiders for me.
As for Minecraft I also do not care for the gameplay but the artstyle kept me from even trying it.

I played first two hours of Borderlands 2 three times because I know it's a great game but it hurts my eyes way too much. Abusive cell shading and bad colors choices ruin it in my opinion, I don't see shit and I can't play normally (especially when you had this UI & constant lagging).

Call of Juarez Bound in Blood. The amount of post effects on hits obfuscating view and making whole game blurry completely killed my ability to play the game.

Those generic dungeon JRPG, I bought conception 2 on a whim... oh dear
Playing the same dungeon with slight reskins for 50hours, how do people do it? :/

I'm one of those who uninstalled Dust: An Elysian Tail after playing it for about 5 minutes.
Also most new announced Metroidvania games disappoint me for being too colorful/cute, i'm more into that dark/scif-fi stuff.
Rogue Legacy is great tho...

Yum

Yeah, the hate for Xenoblade X is overblown. I'll admit the artist's style they're using doesn't translate too well and the developers should have opted more realistic or more anime (then the awkward right in the middle), but I'm more than willing to give it a pass. Hell, even the first game gets shit on enough. To me, fine, you can hate the character models, but to do so partly ignores the environment graphics which are seriously (and literally) out of this world and offering players a fantastic and fresh overworld experience
(system limitations and year of release in mind)
. But, by all means, lets comment how the faces look a bit awkward and ignore the rest. :P

Borderlands is a chore to look at. The cel-shaded characters and items clash with the non-cel-shaded environments, and the whole world is drab and boring.

Red Dead Revolver (PS2) is the only game I stopped playing cause of visuals.

I tried it after Red Dead Redemption, but the game is one of the fuzziest looking games when played on an HDTV. It literally felt like a sub 240p image was being blown up on screen. I couldn't make out anything.

Since I played all the Souls games and I wanted to lead into Bloodborne somehow, I've decided to take a stab at King's Field II, From Software's PSX "Souls" game.

...I...I can make it...

WOW I'm playing this game as well for the exact same reason! I'm actually really enjoying it. You can see a lot of dark souls/ demon's souls in it. Once you look passed the clunky controls and ps1 graphics it's quite a good game.

Oh and for me, it's really the gameplay, ambiance, and sound design that matters the most. I rarely stop playing a game solely because of it's graphics.

Psychonauts creeped me enough not to try it until the midle of the next gen.

I deeply regret it!
That game was an underrated masterpiece!

If a game is supposedly good enough then nothing, I am open to anything and limiting yourself based off of surface level impressions can keep you from finding new things. Mass Effect for example isn't something I'd normally be into but I played it based off of its rep and really enjoyed it.

That doesn't mean I don't have my prejudices.

- I find any faux-retro designs to be boring..especially since many (not all) of these games are just trying to make you go "hey remember the old days yo.." in which I would rather play those games instead.

-I watch a lot of anime but even I can't handle everything. Its weird tho as I can play of the iffy stuff but yeah not all of it.

- Overly realistic stuff. No thanks

-Scary stuff..I am a pussy. so no...

- Dust. It seemed like a good game but nah son nah.

But for the most part, like I said I am open to try things to see if I like it or not. Gameplay rules all.

Wow. I don't want to accuse anyone of hive mind, but I feel like Codename: S.T.E.A.M. got caught in the same kind of weirdly zeitgeist-driven vertex that The Order got caught in -- it's almost overwhelming how much of the community has said "this is the thing we hate now." Bizarre.

I played the demo extensively, and thought it looked quite nice. Plays even better. I mean, what 3DS screens or videos look good? I've seen very few.

Back to the question, I'd say the Gears of War/Arkham style of meathead character design repelled me from those games and a few others back when it was really en vogue. And as I said in the new screen shots thread, Final Fantasy XV's art direction looks incredibly disjointed to me. I don't think I'd be able to get over it, unless something changes drastically before release.

Nope. It's exactly like Xenosaga, same artist. People are mostly looking to one character or that one premade character creation that's being used. (the guy with the red hair)

Anyway, I have more of a problem with realism in games and get turned off by them. I prefer style and not as easily turned off by some of the more unique stuff.

Any game that uses black bars basically. Black bars to me is a huge no-no in games, if you want to make a movie that bad go make a movie but don't force that into a game. The least you could do is make the black bars optional.

Black bars are the main reason for me to skip and never pick up the Order, I refuse to play Dragons Dogma cause of it.

The only game I ever gave a pass for black bars was beyond two souls because I really wanted to see the story, never again!
