Has a western dev ever tried making a "jrpg"?

WRPG's have generally been superior to JRPG's the last ten years. I'm not sure why they would want to take a step back. The JRPG market has not been all bad but I think western developers have driven the market recently...

Tell that to Activision and South Park Studios.

Fun fact: the producer of this game was Ted Woolsey, who every English speaking fan of 16bit jrpgs should know.

I disagree.

The DS had a bunch of amazing JRPGs.

They have certainly had some good games for sure but I don't think they compare to The Witcher 3, Divinity: Original Sin and Pillars of Eternity just to name a few. This is just my opinion and as always YMMV...

This really depends on what you value in a game.

WRPGs are generally better when it comes to stories and immersiveness, but JRPGs I think tend to be better video games, with their battle and growth systems.

I have an idea for one where an ancient cosmic horror from the deep turns out to be a hero and saves the world.

I'll call it

Billy and the Cthulusaurus.

I'm still waiting for a black team to make one.
Wasn't there a kickstarter for a game made by African developers? I wonder what happened with that? Also not even sure it was jRPG inspired, but I definitely think it was an RPG of some sort.

I think this game had literal FF6/Chrono Trigger sprites, didn't it?
Man, every time.

Short answer: no it didn't, and no one's ever been able to prove they did conclusively.

It's funny, dungeon crawling games like Wizardry have basically been abandoned by non-indie devs in the west while the Japanese have mainly taken them over. I'd almost consider them retroactive JRPGs lol

I mean Sonic Chronicles was pretty much Bioware scribbling on a napkin what they thought a jrpg is. They were like "pff! We can do a jrpg in our sleep!", and it's one of the most boring games I have ever played.

BATTLE CHASERS NIGHTWAR Comes out Oct 3rd but seriously needs more advertising... They are digging into JRPG roots, and by all accounts (everyone whos played the alpha, convention demos, closed door demos) its going to be amazing! Everyone needs to check this out!!

Thanks for sharing this - wasn't on my radar, but it really looks fatastic.

Perhaps the more interesting question would be Japanese WRPGs.

I'm thinking Arcana, King's Field, Virtual Hydlide, the SNES Wizardry remakes. Stuff like that.

Good question. Only ones I can think of are Traverse, Record of the Lodoss War (Dreamcast), Dragons Dogma kinda, western PC games ported by Japanese companies to JP PCs/consoles. Maybe Xanadu Next but that's a bit of a stretch...
