Has anime changed or have I changed? (Slight spoilers)

Well I watched Cowboy Bebop back in 01-02 when it first aired on adult swim. I have never seen another anime since that I loved as much as that. I feel I got spoiled by really great anime at a early age so now most of the anime I watch does not compare, even though there is still a lot of good out there. So.. I feel you.

Try My Hero Academia. It's got comedy to lighten up the mood and poke fun at the superhero genre but when things get serious, it gets serious.

You could try Fate/Zero (supernatural action in modern day). Fate/Zero is a prequel, but you can start from there (and its better than the original source anyway). It has a big exposition dump in the first episode to get things out of the way. Or Psychopass (sci-fi action) - although this one does go downhill in the 2nd season since a new writer was just filling in until the original finished a movie, which wasn't that good either.

You've mentioned Gundam there, so you could check Gundam Iron Blooded Orphans, although it has its issues, Gundam Unicorn or other recent military themed mecha anime like Argevollen.

Another great recommendation is Shinsekai Yori, also known as From the New World.
I really like Shin Sekai Yori/From the New World, but it's not really an action show (although there is some action once in a while).

As someone who has felt the same way as you OP, do not bother with the GAF anime of the year threads or the general recommendations from GAF's vocal anime community. Check out the various old school anime recommendations/modern anime isnt good threads for recommendations. There's plenty of old stuff for us to still watch.

If you're making a thread in OT and asking "what should I watch" you shouldn't be surprised when everybody and their mums just list their favorite show and try to give reasoning as to why it works. It works like clockwork everytime with "I want to watch show like X" and immediately you get flooded with "One Piece, Naruto, Hunter X Hunter" etc...

The community thread has plenty of people who will outright try to give you recommendations based off what you have listed as liked and not just list their favorite shows. It doesn't work for every member of course, there is always one that will list their favorite show.

A bit generalizing to imply nobody can give proper recommendations in the community because it didn't work for you. We've had plenty of people come to the thread asking for suggestions and leaving satisfied.

Cowboy Bebop is my favorite anime of all time and I still find great shows to watch. Yamato 2199 is the first to come to mind and there are plenty more since Bebop.

Oh, I didn't know he was specifically looking for action anime, just giving out good recommendations, genres be damned lol

1. As a kid or young adult, you watched a small portion of what anime had to offer. It was the small portion that the US Cable Networks thought would appeal people like you. A portion that was further filtered through the modification of art, music and dialogue to ensure that it was to your demographic's liking. To ensure that ratings could be obtained and profit to be earned. Thanks to the internet there's no such filters in place these days. So instead of CN or whatever spoonfeeding you the 2-4 shows you'd pick up a year, you have to search and be on the look out for them. And that search is a bitch considering that there's more than like 100 shows made per year.

2. Anime has changed a lot. But it's not like a lot of people assume. The change isn't related to moe, fanservice, harem shows or whatever. The biggest changes are that anime is now primarily done in short seasons and that the main source of income is either through advertising of the original works or through the sales of merchandise and derivative works like manga, LN, games and such. It's slightly modified version of the old OVA system. That change to the system actually has little to do with the shows people like you often quote. Your Narutos, Gundams, Bleaches, DBZs, Yu Yu Hakushos, Death Notes and shows like those aren't really affected by this.

3. I think you've changed a bit. A show like Kuroko no Basket probably would have hooked you completely before but now doesn't. Your taste has evolved. No idea where to though but I'm sure there's still something out there for you every year but you gotta put in the time to look for it.

Nah, I always go with the opinion that it's just availability and other factors which have changed how we perceive anime.

Even the ratio of good Anime to bad isn't much different IMO. We just had filters in the past because what was available was limited by broadcast schedules and physical media. We should be grateful that most Anime companies in the past had such great taste!

Ease of access tends to bring the entire industry into focus, especially the bad parts.

Some of my favorites recently:
FMA Brotherhood
New Hunter X Hunter
Samurai Flamenco
Gatchaman Crowds
My Hero Academia
DB Super
YAMATO 2199
Knights of Sidonia

Etc. Etc.

I will admit that I am nostalgic for old Anime but although stuff older than most mentioned here.

Bubblegum Crisis, Gunbuster, and Gatchaman are my GOAT! It was all down hill after that.

Anime peaked here:

Can already picture a remake of this where they use a 3d camera rotation and awful cg textures :S

It even does the MMORPG shit better than any other anime... and it DID IT FIRST.

Watch Haikyuu! OP, amazing sports anime that has potential to be at the top with the best of the best.

As for action, Fate series (start at the first one), Psycho-Pass (s1 > s2), FMA Brotherhood, Magi, Hunter x Hunter, Attack on Titan, Baccano! (dub). Start with those, I don't think you will be disappointed based on your first post.

I've not seen my Hero anime, but I've read the manga. I think you'd probably like that, best new big series that is exploding.

I won't lie tho, I definitely take comfort in the fact that there's a bunch of older stuff I have yet to watch, so I don't fret too much when I feel that an anime season is lacking.

Reread the OP.

Spoilers:
He mentions One Punch Man and says he didn't like it.

he said in the OP he has seen One Punch Man and doesn't like it because he likes 'super serious' shonen/action anime. One Punch Man is comedic.

Hell, Jojo has a lot of style but also a humorous undertone and comedic dialogue. Not sure if he'd like that.

boo, I skipped that info

well Jojo is the best anyway. NICEU

Do you like wrestling?

If you do go watch Tiger Mask W, just finished airing and it's about a wrestler who must fight an evil organisation that wants to monopolise Japanese wrestling and it's all played straight. Can be hit and miss in the early episode but starts powering through after it hits double digits.

Shit, HxH is even playing on Toonami, though the dub is only like 1/3 of the way through the series.

Just to get on a tangent... When people mention Toonami anime, I often see Tenchi Muyo being left out. That was some memorable entry-level harem shit. >__> <__<

You should definitely watch Haikyuu!

Don't watch Psycho Pass.

Entry level? It was the original.

There's nothing wrong with watching older anime (or any other media) in preference to newer anime if that's your preference. That said, there are more recent anime that I think would appeal to you based on your expressed preference for action with a serious tone. Here is what I would recommend checking out:

Asura
Blue Exorcist: The Movie (standalone; doesn't require having watched the TV series)
Concrete Revolutio
Garo the Animation
Gundam the Origin
Haikyuu
ID-0
Kuromukuro
Majin Bone
Space Battleship Yamato 2199
Tiger Mask W

These should have the kind of tone and storytelling that you're after, at least roughly.

Then there was Sword Art Online. As a former World of Warcraft addict the appeal was obvious and after episode 1 I was absolutely hooked. It was really cool how they blended a lot of my favorite anime tropes and a lot of my favorite MMORPG tropes together. But they sped through most of what made the show good and abandoned the primary hook of the show in future seasons. Not only that the main character became devoid of personality and was never challenged again.

I would recommend Log Horizon if you're interested in an exploration of the details of living in an MMO world. There are some harem aspects and the production values are below Sword Art Online, but it's a much, much better show.

After that, I tried a few anime here and there. Really enjoyed Kuroko No Basket for a while but it didn't draw me back to keep watching. Hajime No Ippo was absolutely incredible but that wasn't a modern show.

On the sport side, try out Haikyu!!, which has such amazing animation and a solid shonen sports tale. It's currently on its third season.

Now I look at the anime space and there just doesn't seem to be a ton of anime that appeal to me. I primarily like Shounen, action, mecha, and anime based around a battle of wits. But I don't like comedy that much and it feels like every anime of that type doesn't really take itself seriously nowadays (other than Attack on Titan). Things like One Punch Man don't really appeal to me because of that.

Okay, on the serious side of things, but recent? Here's a few shows to try. For mecha, try Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans, Gundam Unicorn, or Aldnoah Zero. The Heroic Legend of Arslan is a great fantasy action show. Fate Stay Night's Unlimited Blade Works line is only three years old at this point.

I'd say try some of those out and see if anything catches your eye.

No, Trojita is just a dumb dog.

Please do not comment on harem anime unless you have watched the entirety of Urusei Yatsura as well as all the movies.

I do not feel that Aldnoah Zero is a good recommendation. Protagonist just solves everyone's problems nearly singlehandedly repeatedly, while the deuteragonist is a mess, to put it lightly.

The first half of Sword Art Online I thought was pretty good to me, it was darkfantasy for the most part and I liked the tension due to lives being on the line. The 2nd half of Season 1 and all of Season 2 were awful to me. Haven't seen the movie.

OP you may be interested in Mob Psycho 100. Its from the same author as One Punch Man but its a more serious show even if there is humor. Its got some great action, incredible animation and art and a lot of heart.

Please watch One Outs. You said you liked anime based around a battle of wits and that's precisely what it is. It's a baseball anime but you don't need to like or even understand that much of baseball as you'll pick things up as you watch.
