Has anime changed or have I changed? (Slight spoilers)

Psycho Pass season 1 is one of my favorite shows, but I'm scared to watch season 2 because I heard it was disappointing, and I don't want it to taint my experience with the first one.

Both Season 2 and the Movie are disappointing. There's good ideas, but just nothing substantial to support a plot and cast

Also explains why there hasn't been any new projects

There's no reason to "give up" on anime. Imagine giving up on American films just because they're American films. That makes no sense.

I haven't been into anime for anime's sake since probably middle school. At 29 now, though, there's occasionally something I discover or decide to watch on a whim that ends up great. I tend to watch maybe one or two series a year, and that's enough for me. I also don't really keep up with the latest. Recently been watching Jojo's bizarre adventure, and just finished the first season which was pretty fantastic. Reserving judgment for the second season (stardust crusaders or whatever) for now, since I'm only 2 episodes in, but the story is really disconnected and it's not starting off nearly as strong. Based on what you like, I'd definitely say give the first season of Jojo a shot and continue from there if you want. It's good stuff.

Also, it's not new, but watch the entirety of Gundam universal century from the original series all the way up to Unicorn. It's pretty damn rewarding.

Off topic, but damn if this wasn't my most hated comic back when we got the newspaper. Even lazier than the usual funny pages schlock. Just awful.

Hold up.

If you want something great that reminds you of the toonami days.....

OP HxH will make you fall right back in love with anime, tbh. I was gonna recommend a whole bunch of stuff, but, just watch hunter.

Both. Anime has definitely changed to be more insular towards a particular audience, but your expectations and sentiments as you have grown older has also changed.

There are still plenty of award winning, great anime series being released in both movie and series format every year, but its very different from how it was from the 80s, 90s and even just the previous decade, and for a lot of older anime fans, that can be a hard pill to swallow.

Its just a matter of being more perceptive IMO.

If you ever need some recommendations just ask, i can help you out

This is interesting considering the versatility of manga, in particular.
Manga is much more popular and much easier to produce than animation. It's the same problem cartoons have vs comics in the US. Even though they faced similar problems (with censorship) in their early days, comics are much more versatile, simply because the medium allows them to be.

I got the steins gate blu ray on sale a few days ago, watched the first three or four eps and it is boring as sin. art isn't grabbing me either. seems weird, as it's got good reviews. will it get better, or...?

it's funny - sword art online is another highly rated show, but I found that pretty dull as well

A show that got me back into anime was Nichijou. What a fantastic show, I can NOT suggest it more.

It's amazingly funny and well animated. It's about 3 high school girls but its actually funny.

Probably both, hard to say as I've fallen off anime entirely in favor of just reading manga.

It's just better.

There's nothing wrong with watching older anime (or any other media) in preference to newer anime if that's your preference. That said, there are more recent anime that I think would appeal to you based on your expressed preference for action with a serious tone. Here is what I would recommend checking out:

Asura
Blue Exorcist: The Movie (standalone; doesn't require having watched the TV series)
Concrete Revolutio
Garo the Animation
Gundam the Origin
Haikyuu
ID-0
Kuromukuro
Majin Bone
Space Battleship Yamato 2199
Tiger Mask W

These should have the kind of tone and storytelling that you're after, at least roughly.
Listen to those recommendations.

Steins; Gate does pickup, but its still nothing special and is forgettable. The visual novel is much better.

What is the appeal of this show? A lot of old school anime fans love this show.

It plays to Takahashi's strengths by focusing on the comedy part of the romantic comedy and avoid basically all the stuff that gets associated with these types of series nowadays. That said, like most of her work, it's best to read/watch it in short spurts rather than trying to marathon it. The repetitive storylines will wear you down, otherwise. If you do decide to throw all reason to the wind and stick with a Takahashi series for the long haul, I'd probably go with Urusei Yatsura over Ranma, to be honest.

Read Maison Ikkoku instead. It's her best work.

The drama picks up in a couple of episodes but I wasn't a fan of it anyway

I am in the same boat. A few years back I used to watch almost everything or at least give most anime a chance before either dropping or continuing to watch. Now I can barely watch any anime. I tried watching different genre but still I can't finish one episode. Even when I was watching Attack on Titan, I skipped few episodes. Which sucks to me because I really enjoyed the first season. I'm gonna try with this season, though I've seen what's coming and nothing was interesting enough for me

Edit: I would say even with video games. I get bored easily? Sometimes I think I'm depressed :\

Under the advise of GAF, Hunter X Hunter 2011 I will check it out. Buddy of mine has them all so I'll just go borrow them. How many episodes we talkin?

Last night I finished Your Lie in April, which is modern, and it became quite possibly my favorite anime of all time. The story cut me deeper than a goddamn cartoon had any right to. The visuals were absolutely beautiful, as was the music, and the character development was really wonderful to behold. There were so many chances for this anime to be cliché and mediocre, but it ended up being incredibly compelling, emotional, heartbreaking, inspiring, and by the end, unforgettable.

I now understand what all those weebs call "Post Anime Depression Syndrome." I've been completely out of it all day today, and every time I hear the music from the OST I get a lump in my throat.

I cannot recommend this show highly enough. You can watch it for free on Crunchyroll and it's also on Netflix if you have that.

I watched the first episode of this and promptly decided I never wanted to watch it again.

A weeeeb friend of mine was going nuts last night telling me to check it out

~150, though if you're watching the dub it only has 50 out now.

The length is intimidating, but it really sucks you in. If you're not invested by episode 5 (or so), you'll probably never like it, even though it gets way better later on.

Anime, just like any medium, changes.

Music, film, tv-shows etc. These mediums are not immune to change and are infact constantly undergoing change with time. Anime is no different.

I want that 80's/90's anime aesthetic back.

It's changed but the general level of quality is still the same IMO. 1-2 series a year that really hit it out of the park.

I'd check out Psycho-Pass (dodge s2) and Black Lagoon, I throw them into the same basket as Darker than black.

I have a hard time finding anime I don't like, which is largely a reason why I'm overly picky about what I jump into lest I lose hours/days of my life to it. Yep, even the moe stuff, since I write love stories. Unfortunately, I've fallen into the same stupid niche as I have with live films where my friends only watch Action flicks with me, and save all the mushy stuff that I prefer for their SOs. Ah well.

Like people have said here and in other threads, anime has changed for better and for worse. Otakus are a huge focus in demographics which continues to bury the medium into a niche with lots of trashy anime catered just to them. There's also the problem where pretty much every single manga or light novel that's remotely popular gets an anime adaption, regardless of quality.

At the same time, these are both good things. Anime focused at Otakus tend to be very easy to spot and avoid, whilst the fact that everything gets an adaption means that more lower key stories get to have their chance in the sun, not only with an anime but with getting exposure overseas, something that would never happen back in the 80s or 90s.

It's a big double edged sword, you just need to focus on the positives. Do some scouting out for anime genres you enjoy, there's always going to be something there. Just because the mainstream stuff isn't as consistently amazing as it used to be doesn't mean there isn't good anime to be found, all it takes is some searching.

Well I for one would be great if they would finally move on with the cute moe look (art design) that's been going on for like forever and maybe balance it up, but that also depends on the original source material (manga, LN, VN) which it is adapted from if it isn't an original work.

Otakus are a huge focus in demographics which continues to bury the medium into a niche with lots of trashy anime catered just to them.

Which saddens me and it also means it won't change any time soon.

Truly, they don't make shows like Gundam Wing these days ...

Most of these shows you mention are pretty shit to be honest, some direly so. At the same time it's not difficult to find some similar shounen stuff these days and one that is probably better written and certainly much better produced and paced.

I mean you're talking about two of the most expensive animated films ever made against everything else. Not really a fair comparison.
I mean, those are the best representations of the style, but even lower budget stuff carried it well.

The style was different, not just the effort put into the backgrounds, characters and shading. Some modern day anime looks good, too, but it's missing that charm.

Hell, I miss 80's/90's cinema too. Something about that era's media, man.

I think its an art style thing for me now. It seems like most shows now have to have some degree of cuteness in them . Like I'm sure many of them have interesting stories but pretty much everything is too colorful and cheerful looking for me. After maybe things that came out in 2007 I haven't seen anything that looks nice to me
