Has anyone ever substituted actually playing a game with watching a playthrough?

Let's Play Sonic 2006 by pokecapn and friends
This thing, it's so amazing, everyone should see it.
The ball... the friggin' ball puzzles
Yep, this. Watched it with a friend, was awesome.

I could never finish the final battle in Half-Life 2: Episode 2 so I gave up and watched the ending on YouTune. I don't care. It was the end of the game and the only thing left playable in the game and it was too fucking hard.

I have friends that do this and I really don't understand. It's like proxy enjoyment.

I can understand doing it sometimes, but it is crazy how I have friends who watch more than play.

Though when I was really young I used to like watching my cousins play games more than actually playing them.

Another one for Deadly Premonition, watched the 'V+J' endurance run. Watching the story unfold with their reactions was pure gold.

I'd love to play it myself but I don't think I'd make it past one hour haha.

twitch.tv is great for watching someone else play a game. I recently saw Gears of War 3 played that way for a lot of the game, so I got single player story down. I've watched more Dark Souls than I've played and i bought the game on release.

I watch others play League of Legends instead of me playing since I sorta suck I watch while I play SWTOR.

I go into Spectator mode for DOTA 2 in game its nice.

Loving Supergreatfriend's laid-back, low-key, highly articulate, no-talking-during-cutscenes, non-obnoxious humor-laden, efficiently played 100 percent playthrough of Deadly Premonition, downloadable in 720p and linked to on YouTube HERE. I don't have a 360 (I'm a PC/PS3/Wii/3DS gamer) but I absolutely love the 12+ hours I've watched of DP so far. It's like a TV show to unwind with at the end of the workday. Always surprising, always a joy, and none of the difficulty I might experience if I were contending with the somewhat stiff controls while having no idea what to do in its open world. Highly recommended.

I also like what I've seen of his Shadows of the Damned playthrough. Is that available to download anywhere?

Shadows of the Damned is something he's doing for 1up, so all those videos are only available on 1up's Youtube channel.

If you haven't, watch his LPs of Illbleed, D, and D2. They are some weird-ass games, and he does a great job at showing them off. They definitely fall into the category of games I am glad exist and was happy to watch, but don't ever want to play.

SGF is definitely one of the better LPers out there.

I used to have a tendency to just stop a game right before the ending. Dunno why really, but sometimes I even sold the game before I could. I've been watching up on youtube just to see the final segments, since I don't really want to buy the game again. I think the last time I did this on was with FF13.

Yes, for games like 999, Clock Tower 3, Deadly Premonition.

I'm trying hard not to look at one for RE:Revelations, since I might one day decide to get a 3DS.

Not to substitue actually playing a game, but I watch them when I'm considering a purchase.

Recently I was considering repurchasing a game, and then after watching a walkthrough was reminded of a few levels I don't feel like going through again. I decided not to purchase.

As I'll never play Deadly Premonition I think I might give this LP thing a shot :) So do I chose Supergreatfriend or Giantbomb LP?

Supergreatfriend. It's extremely well researched (it even has movie reviews for the movies York talks about during the game), expertly edited and it's a 100% run from someone who knows the game inside out, has a great LP voice and doesn't talk over cutscenes. The game really benefits from that kind of treatment as opposed to the blind run from GB.

No idea about GB's, but I've been watching Supergreatfriend's for a couple weeks now and so far it's grown to be one of my all time favorite LPs. Great pacing, 100% run and he really manages to transmit his love for the game.

I love LPs. Aside getting the chance to see what the games I can't play are all about (mostly console stuff), the LPs are often interesting and humorous on their own. And for grindy games like No More Heroes, having someone else do all the hardwork's a blessing.

I watch LPs for games I will never play or watch them for the people's reactions. I never watched them as a substitute.

I'm struggling to have fun with Demon's Souls and am considering watching the SDA marathon run. I would like to beat the game on my own, but slogging through one area of one level for an hour or so just to memorize where enemies are is quite boring. I feel like if I knew ahead of time what to watch out for I could worry more about combat, which is very enjoyable.

I also watched my friend beat Bloodrayne: Betrayal in a day, so that eliminated my need to play it. Looked like a fun game, though.

Yes I have. I don't like horror games but everyone hyped so much Amnesia so I watched let's play Amnesia by Jesse Cox.

Yeah, I did this with the persona 4 endurance run. I had bought it but couldn't get past the first hour of pressing X to move dialog along so I dropped it.

When I started watching the ER, I thought I should give the game another chance, but then I saw some more of the dungeon designs and decided not to. I preferred to watch Vinny cast Bufu on things.

I watched Myst, not proud of it, but I really didn't have time to play it, and the video was awesome.

I also watched a walkthrough of FE GCN, but I was midway through when a friend lent me a copy, so now I'm playing it (wanted to play/see it before playing the Wii game).
