Has hardware ever stopped you from enjoying good games?

After reading through this thread about story twists I saw that Baten Kaitos was mentioned quite a bit. I had bought both Baten Kaitos and Origins back when I got my Wii, but had never played them. I knew I needed to buy a GameCube controller to play it, so a couple days ago I bought a Japanese white controller with a longer cable. It arrived today, so I was pretty happy to play some Baten Kaitos. First thing I do is pop open the top of the Wii and plug in the controller. I put the game in, but I can't select it in the menu using the GameCube controller. Sigh. I look for my Wii remote, but find my Pro Controller. I'm looking at how short the cord is and then it dawns on me it plugs into the remote, so it really isn't needed. Sigh. I find my remote and hit power to turn it on. Nothing. Batteries are dead. Sigh. I find some batteries and plug them in and hit power. I see it light up and I start flailing it around trying to select Baten Kaitos. I then look over and see my Wii U tablet is on. The remote was synced to my Wii U, not my Wii and I had just turned it on. Sigh. I turn off the power on the Wii U and start looking for the sync button the Wii. I can't remember where the hell the button is since I've literally only synced it once before. Sigh. I google the answer, pop open the front and hit the sync button. The remote is synced up properly now and I start moving it in order to select Baten Kaitos only the cursor isn't appearing. It hits me that the sensor bar is plugged into my Wii U. Sigh. I unplug it from the Wii U and plug it into the Wii, restart it, and finally I move the cursor to Baten Kaitos and start the game!! "All that effort, just to move the cursor to the game and hit A" I think to myself somewhat miffed that seemingly anything that could go wrong did, but I'm happy to finally have the game going. I get all cozy on the couch, all wrapped up in a blanket and watch the opening cutscene all excited to play me some Baten Kaitos! Hit new game. Memory card not found. FUCKKKKKK!!! Turn off Wii, unplug controller. Go to amazon and buy memory card. Then come here and find this thread.

My brother have a Vita, but I don't feel more comfortable playing it than the 3DS... Actually I rather play on 3ds than Vita, just because the Vita feel more like a console than a handheld.... So I rather play Vita games on TV.

guess you don't like Mario 3D Land, Mario Kart 7, DKCR3D, ALBW, OoT3D, Luigis Mansion 2 then

damnit Nintendo stop putting console games on a handheld!

nah but price has.

money's an issue yeah but it's more like "does this thing justify X dollars even if I have tons of game I know I'll enjoy on it?"

I actually find myself disappointed when I have to play a game on Vita instead of the 3DS XL but I won't sell it either, just suck it up and play the games I want to on the Vita and the rest of the portable games on the XL. I find the Vita to be quite lacking in comfort myself, no good place to put my fingers on it with that damn back touchscreen.

Try to get your hands on a Vita Slim. I hear the ergonomics, and especially the rear touchpad, have been improved.

Not exactly what you're probably after with the thread, but Sony's and Microsoft's hardware prevents me from enjoying their good games as I don't buy their consoles. I don't have time or money for more than one console at a time, and Nintendo has always provided me enough content with their consoles. But of course that doesn't prevent me from enjoying some good games on those consoles if some friend of mine has PSs or XBoxs for example.

Yes

The minute I mentally moved to Ps4 I stopped buying 360 games (stopped buying Ps3 games when I migrated to 360 and its controller).

Once I move, I rarely go back...

Shame as I missed TLOU

Any iOS/Tablet/Phone device is the real answer to this thread.

yes .cs go with 20 fps when you are playing competitive is horrible . i kept apologizing for everytime i could see someone but couldnt shoot in time because of how laggy it was . but games designed for the hardware like how consoles and handhelds are nope.

When Crysis came out I was excited as hell because I waited so long for it and I bought a HD 4850 to enjoy those amazing graphics but the thing overheated every single time I tried to play Crysis T_T

FUCKING 3DS(although XL fixed some stuff, the screen and no second analog stick still pisses me off) And let's not forget Wii, so many great games that I wanted to play but couldn't be bothered with the hardware. Thank God for Dolphin.

Have fun with all those amazing Vita games (?). I'll stick to my 3DS for now, thanks.

I bought a PSP and a bunch of PSP games last year, but I find the thing feels fragile and flimsy and is kinda uncomfortable. I haven't really dived into my PSP games as a result, but I plan to eventually. I'm a bit hesitant about the Vita as a result of my experience with the PSP. I would much rather just have the Vita TV and be able to play the games with a standard controller, whereas I don't mind holding and playing DS / 3DS games for long periods.

And I'm sure there are probably good games on tablets / smartphones but I'm just not interested due to the lack of proper controls.

Vita's build quality is off the fucking chain, absolutely destroys 3DS in that regard so you have nothing to worry about.

My first 360 died a week before Mass Effect came out.
Yeah, this is what I'm thinking of, though in this case it was shortly after Lost Odyssey came out.

Well, problems with hardware can be an issue too, when my PSP developed dark mura spots I didn't really want to play on it much, my Wii's GPU started getting flaky so I didn't play too much in the later years, and my 3DS XL has scratched screen protectors so those need replacing and it even developed some bright mura. If the experience can't be optimal or close enough within the hardware's constraints it's kind of a buzz kill.

not an attack or anything but what are the upcoming Vita games that you mention?

i love my Vita but can't deny that 3DS has arguably the best library overall, and is getting a good amount of games for it.

i still use my psp 1000 from time to time so playing on the 3DS isn't really that tough to adjust to for me, but i can understand where you're coming from

He didn't say Vita had a better library.

No never. Sometimes I want to play games on the best hardware available (for example if there's a PC version) but I just love games and don't care too much as long as the game's good. Then again I buy all the consoles eventually anyway so I have that choice.

Hell right now I spend time playing EDF 2025 on my PS3, a game that if you're lucky goes above 20fps lol. Still enjoying every minute of it though.

I also think when it comes bad bad looking/performing games that sometimes it's a developer just ignoring the platform's limits. It's why games that waver under 30 FPS can get to me (though I got over it for DSII), unless you're trying something truly large in scope like open world games and Shadow of the Colossus did I'd really prefer the FPS be consistently smooth, doubly so if you have to go under 720p and STILL get bad performance (even DSII avoided that apparently, being native 720p like Demon's Souls and unlike DS1.)

Then there's the hardware just being innately low resolution like 3DS and Wii, but ah well.

Hardware/game prices and what it offers yes, actual hardware no.

I'm willing to overlook the 3DS' resolution and only barely the lack of account system.

I hate MK7 but I'm anticipating MK8, SM3DL Is average compared to SM3DW, DK and OoT are ports, I rather play LM2 on the Wii U, ALBW is perfect for the 3ds.

I mostly play FE:A, Pokemon X and Bravely Default...
And there are tons of other games I want to play that wouldn't work on a console without changing the whole game like: KI:U, M&L:DT and Animal Crossing...

I don't dislike the Vita, I like it actually, but most of its games are console like experience, that's why I dislike playing most of its games on it (Vita) and rather play them on the TV.

If you put AC:NL & Pokemon and most of the 3ds games on it (Vita) then it would be my favorite handheld ever.

I don't quite understand how 3DS is a chore to play but alright. I think I somewhat get what you're saying but not really.

Now Wii games with gimmicky waggle controls are what I consider a definite chore to play.
I play on both a Vita and 3DS and I wish I could magically make every 3DS game play on that Vita screen.

I'm taking a break from my 3DS and playing only my Vita. After I beat a few Vita games, I'll go back, but the first few hours are always rough.

Was the same with PSP and DS. The DS screen seems sooooo small after being used to the PSP.

I haven't held one so I can't judge the Vita yet but in terms of the PSP / 3DS I prefer the feel of the 3DS in my hands. The circle pad feels much better than the PSP analog, too.

Plenty of times, actually.

The Wii had poor graphics, something that prevented me from fully enjoying most of its games. Also, the focus on unnecessay motion controls was bad. To me, the Wiimote design is just lacking, they should have done it differently.

The OG 3DS is so poorly designed it's not even funny: the Vita (which I still don consider great, design-wise) is light years ahead. I'm currently playing Mario & Luigi: Dream Team Bros. and the graphics are just horrible. The 3DS XL is a little better but has its share of problems, like the fact that bad graphics pop even more, and the bad d-pad placement.

I never had a truly great experience on PC: to be honest I also never had a true gaming PC, but even the small annoyances that stay between you and the game, and the fact that I'm basically forced to use Windows, are a chore.

Every Wii game that forced you to use the Wiimote.
Nailed it.

It might be the analog placement. I'm used to the Dualshocks so it's no biggie to me, but sometimes the circle pad placement confuses me when I switch after a long session.

I do have difficulty enjoying some old portable systems now. Stuff like Game Gear and Lynx are just hard to enjoy due to the incredibly low quality screens. This was from a time when LCD technology was in its infancy and the quality of these screens, a selling point at one time, really detracts from the experience. They're difficult to see and scrolling results in a completely blurred out image.

Also, I have to agree with the Wii-mote. It really does keep me from playing certain games.

3DS>>>>>PSP for sure when it comes to build quality, PSP is definitely flimsy. OG PSPs are aight though.
The OG PSP and the PSP Go are both rock solid. The Go in particular feels really high quality (and is super useful once you enable homebrew).

The PSP 2000 and 3000 definitely feel cheap, though.

Vita feels much more premium than all of them.

PSP GO is amazing, a bit too small though but it's stylish as hell.

Wrong thread, this is not "Has misinformation ever stopped you from enjoying a good game?"

Also, handheld games in general. They make my hands cramp and my eyes strain. And the games themselves are usually watered-down versions of console games, so why wouldn't I just play a console?

No, but I didn't bought the 3DS because I don't consider it a decent technological
jump from the DS, which I still play and buy games.

The Wii. Mainly the Wii. Yeah, the Wii.
My main problem being that the graphics hardware sucks. It resulted in games looking worse or games being completely different as it couldn't display the level of power that the other games had.

2 games that instantly come to mind are No More Heroes. A game that's fun as hell, but looks so much better on PS3/360 in High Definition.
Another being Sonic Unleashed which had such a downgrade that they were two completely different games with different mechanics.

As of late I've been pretty disappointing with next gen. Showing off their FPS prowess and yet still have problems. Even games like Knack has FPS drops or Dead Rising which frequently dipped. Oddly, the Wii U is the most sturdy machine out at the moment ...just hardly any games.

As much as I'm ashamed to admit it, despite having a PS3 I never got TLoU because I played a bit at a friend's place, and a combination of the framerate and gamepad (I play Tomb Raider etc on PC with M&K and laugh my way through hardest difficulties) made it really impossible for me to enjoy. :(

My flame-absorbent umbrella is deployed. Come at me

I don't know why I can't play games for extended periods with the 3ds... I never had any problems with other nintendo handhelds... but the 3ds I can only play for an hour or 2 before stopping.

I have quit so many games because I can't play using the 3ds for long.

Also, not really a hardware thing, rather than a game design problem. I couldn't play early vita games like Golden Abyss and AC:L because of all the stupid shoehorned gimmicks I couldn't turn off

I loved my PSP but the lack of a second analog made a few genuinely good games feel like a chore, and I know I'll feel the same about my future 3DS.

Still, good games are good games. I mean, people are playing MH with a claw grip, it gotta be worth it.
