Has Real Pic January changed your perception of posters?

nop

well i expected to see more frosted tips, and I am of course disappointed.
I definitely read everything you post in an authoritative tone due to that avatar. :lol

Also, smokeydave use to be a bad ass now he's just normal.

I'm new to gaf, so I didn't have any prior perceptions of people. What I have found from Real Pic gaf, though, is that everyone is very civil, well spoken, and I would probably share a beer with all of them.

That sounds like a plan for L.A. get together.

If everything works out I should be moving down there in the fall

I'm glad you decided to pose this question to GAF after I hassled you about it last night on TinyChat, OP. Haha.

It's kind of nice not to get recognized anymore; "In a town where no one knows your name."

I've wanted to tell a couple of people how stupid they are. I can't now because they know my real face and might find me and beat me up.

Made me realize that some people have dual accounts.

Real Pic GAF (the thread) could be mostly lurkers. There are lots of posters there I've never seen before. Also, people tend to really think about their posts when they have to put their face behind them. I tried it for a night and it really made me tone my posts down.

I just ran into this in the "Do religious people bother you" thread. I was expressing some admittedly harsh opinions about a group of people and when people were reacting like I offended them and they seemed like OK people in their avatars, I just backed out instead of standing my ground and fighting it out for no reason.

Not sure if that's a good thing or not, though.

Yeah, my experience with it has been similar and I'm with you. I'm not sure if that's good or bad.

I keep getting lazy I'll probably start participating tonight if tinychat is filled up. Will connect webcam, take a picture and join the fun.

I could see that happening a lot... I think it is a good thing.

ALSO, I just remembered technomancer orayn and their brother avatars, not even sure if i've seen them with new avatars or not.

[edit] omg I have, and they look like they'd get along so well, too :lol;

I think it's a good thing. We stop these discussions in person because we realize there are human elements to every discussion. It's not political correctness to not want to offend people, it's just not being an asshole.

It's way harder to be an asshole when you can't escape the fact that you're talking to people and I like that (and I say that as someone who could often be an asshole).

The real pic thread taught me real people actually like to yammer without direction to people on the Internet. People always claim they find personal blogs pointless but that's what it basically was.

Only people my perceptions have changed on are the regulars in the Real Pic thread. Everyone else is still a picture be it of themselves or someone else. I'm used to forums where people post next to their real face.

Yes and no. More in a negative way though...

Pretty much my thoughts on that thread, to be honest.

Sorry to disappoint you.

Or

i so sowwy i disgracu my ancestru

I don't even know how to read this. Am I supposed to be racist or something?

Hahaha well, you were actually the only one who took time to answer there, and that motivated me, so thank you!

Well that's good because it proves you are a civil and empathic person, but that hinders ME from getting to know what you actually think about something, and your reasoning.
So that's not good. :(

This.

I find myself trying to be nicer when my picture is there smiling like an idiot.

I'm also less likely to poke fun at someone else's post when they have a personal picture for their avatar. I don't want to hurt someone's feelings when I can see their face, it's much easier to be snarky towards cartoon/fake avatars.

No, I'm trying to be like the asian guy from Inception.

I barely see asshat posters here, and I find it great when people are voicing their dissenting opinions even if just because their anonymity. If they are being somewhat honest and not just contraire and spiteful, let the internet be an escape for their thoughts.

Its not about honesty or the ability to voice your opinion, but more the attitude you do it with, ya know? Like most people have probably heard from their mom at one point: "Its not what you say, but how you say it!".

Not so much.

I am a bit nicer to RPs with whom I disagree, but I still think they are wrong if they are wrong.

Your Avatar reminds me of the Allstate damage control dude...

Admittedly, I did initially lurk the thread (out of interest) and thought about "contributing" but eh. After seeing where it ultimately led to/became, I decided not to.

I'm less confrontational and more at ease. Aside from one or two, every 'real pic' member seems approachable and fun.

And no, I'm not talking about gender/color/beauty, but the visual agreement from post content to picture.
Well but I am and I have to say that I'm surprised about how good looking gaf is. The lonely basement nerd cliche doesn't apply to this board at all.
