Has TGS became irrelevant in the console market?

A lot of Japanese developers moved onto mobile gacha games, panchinko, web games, closed studio or merged with bigger ones.

Everyone is eyeing Final Fantasy XV and seeing if big budget JRPG games can be successful in this market anymore.

What to expect out of a full price game has changed over the years. The cost to develop is more expensive and JRPG's are very time consuming to make. Overall the lack of games is what made TGS falter over the years. That and the major games we do see announced are usually prior or if they are shown exclusively at TGS the game is underwhelming or only markets to a very small amount of customers even in Japan.

I find TGS sometimes even more interesting than E3 with the types of games being shown there. Nioh and Nier announcements, seeing sega and Tecmo Koei spread theri wings is also a welcome sight. I think this TGS will be fine. Now as for it being a spectacle, that will require Sony de-risking console development and slowly building up the Japanese market and more games that are truly international in scope, that you can sell everywhere and do well.

My excitement for all conferences has dropped several notches so TGS doesn't even register anymore. I just want them to come and go as quickly as possible so I can catch up on the news after. It was a much better use of time to ignore e3 this year then skim the news when it was done.

A lot of Western games are selling pretty well in Japan. Well, at the least at a rate higher than before. I can see some western titles being shown at TGS.

True. Last year I believe they showed CoD, Assassin's Creed, and Uncharted 4 at Sony's conference. Maybe one more western game but that was pretty much it. There were way more hype JP announcements and footage, like Ni-Oh, Dragon Quest Builders, DQ Musou, Gravity Rush 2, New Yakuza, etc. They might show Watch Dogs and CoD again this year. I doubt they'd show titles like Steep, Ghost Recon, Mass Effect, Battlefield, etc. Maybe they'll show them in a montage near the end.

I'll be happy with some new Last Guardian

If this title is nowhere to be found at TGS(mere months before LG's release), I'd be worried if I were you.

Please God, allow Capcom to rise from the ashes and unveil DMC5, Dino Crisis 4, Onimusha 5, Lost Planet 4, Dragon's Dogma 2, Monster Hunter Next for consoles, Resident Evil 2 (with over the shoulder aiming) and show RE7 combat... Please God!

Capcom: "Sorry Allonym, there is no god"

In the grand scheme of things, Japan is no longer a relevant force in console gaming, and the most prominent Japanese publisher by sales success (Nintendo) never really shows up, making it even harder to attain relevance.

That said, obviously Japanese game enthusiasts still find at least a few announcements to be excited about every year. Nioh was probably the stand out last year.

I've erased the titles that won't show up and fixed your post.

I guess the bigger question would be is Japan still relevant in console gaming? It doesn't really seem like it since their tastes lean more towards mobile, but also handheld so I guess it still counts. It's becoming further detached as time goes on with various Japanese publishers having prioritized other events for a number of announcements. It seems if it will have appeal to an audience you could classify as anything above niche it will end up at E3 or elsewhere instead now.

Seems like it....but Sony e3 this year was pretty spectacular, I wouldn't mind updates on things that were shown there. Also some dragon quest updates and ff15 trailers is pretty hype. I think Japan can make a splash again. Look at splatoon. A new Dragons dogma, Re7 update, new DMC or something. They can still make a splash.

Haven't paid attention to TGS at all during last gen when the likes of GREE and Mobage dominated half of the show but with E3 slowly reduced to glorified Sony Conference these few years I find myself caring about TGS again, especially now we begin to get English and Chinese version in Asia from some major publishers

Hell no. We still got Summer Lesson and DOA VR coming. That's very relevant.

This Capcom you speak off doesn't exist anymore sadly. I only hope we see more of RE7 (although i'm not very excited for it tbh)

I care about TGS more than E3.

...though, to be honest, that might speak more to how little I care about E3 than to how much I care about TGS.

Every year I am hopeful that a few key games from the likes of Konami (Castlevania, Silent Hill, Vandal Hearts reboot or remaster, etc.), Capcom (Mega Man (X) sequel or reboot, Dino Crisis reboot or remaster, Devil May Cry sequel, Lost Planet reboot, Final Fight reboot, console port Recent Monster Hunter, etc.), SNK (King of Fighters, Samurai Showdown, Fatal Fury / Garou 2, etc.), Square Enix (FFVII remake, new console Secret of Mana, Seiken Densetsu 3 localisation, etc.), FROM (Bloodborne 2, Otogi reboot / sequel, new IP, etc.), SEGA (new 2D Sonic, Shenmue 3, Taxman Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Skies of Arcadia something, Panzer Dragoon something, Jet Set Radio something, Outrun sequel, etc.), Sony / Japan Studio (Tokyo Jungle 2, Trash Panic 2, The Last Guardian, Legend of Dragoon reboot, etc.), PlatinumGames (anything) or an out of left field game like a new Shadow Hearts, Grandia or a Japanese indie game will be announced at TGS and instantly make me believe in the relevance of TGS again for me as a western, old school console gamer, but quite often I end up getting disappointed for the most part.

That said, I can't help but feel hype each year in the days leading up to it. Having hope is better than nothing I guess.

I don't know, Sony seem to be the only ones who make a big deal out of it anymore. Their TGS Conference is always good for Japanese game fans though. Personally really looking forward to Tuesday.

I can't really cite anything specific that's come out of TGS in the last couple of years that really really struck my fancy, but I still view it as a big event to look forward to.

Last year was Gravity Rush 2 reveal, I think? That might be the only thing that stuck with me...
