Has the last 360 update fixed DVD playback at all?

What's your connection and TV type? In my experience the upscaling done through VGA/HDMI results in pretty good image quality on an HDTV. I'm not a videophile, though, so I don't know what your standards are. I certainly wouldn't complain much if I got stuck with the 360 as my main DVD player for a while.

My 360's going to be my default DVD player until I get my PS3 sometime later this year or early next, so i'm wondering is the last Spring update has done anything to improve image quality. In this ExtremeTech article from January of this year it scored a pathetic 20/130 in the HQV benchmark, but I can't find any results done with the Spring 2007 update.

If you use a console as your primary DVD player, why are you using HQV benchmarks?

Because he can. I used my PS2 as my primary DVD player as well. My PS3 has taken over the job and is now the center of my home entertainment.

What? Oh, I get it, I should be happy if it looks like shit because if i'm using a console as a DVD player it must mean I can't tell the difference, lolz.

It was a rhetorical question, lolz.

Besides, it doesn't look like shit.

It's a perfecty fine DVD player.

Lolz.

Wait, wait, wait a sec... so your 360 is already hooked up via VGA to your 1080p tv?

Then how 'bout you pop in a dvd and be your own judge?

no shit!...a paper with numbers means shit. Let your eyes and ears be the judge. 360 plays dvds just fine..bit noisy but hey, nother thread entirely.

This article has been cited over and over again, but it seems like nobody actually READS it.

We chose to use component cables to hook up the Xbox 360, since that is by far the most common connection for it. Because Microsoft values compliance with the DVD Forum's rules, component cable output of DVDs is limited to 480p resolution.

Try it in 1080p through VGA or HDMI and you'll find that the 360 is a fine upscaling DVD player.

Yeah I was about to say that, if you 'can tell the difference lolz' then do it.

I personally wouldn't use a console as my primary DVD player, ever. Not because of quality, but drive wear and tear. You can get a cheap upconverting DVD player with HDMI for around $75 or less right now.

It's more than fine. When I play SD DVDs I don't even have a preference when upconverting movies w/the X360 HD-DVD add-on (I don't bother using the console DVD player since I always leave a game in it) or my PS3 both via HDMI.

For the record, I have a 1080p display and I haven't bothered to do an A/B test. For the one or two times I actually tried to compare a scene by watching, I didn't see a big enough difference to warrant wanting to do more tests. And as someone else put it, just watch a damn DVD and let your eyes be the judge.
