Has there ever been a well done pirate RPG?

Man ya'll really want me to hop back onto Tales huh?

It's a good game, much better than Xillia and Zestiria.

And it's actually polished!

My favorite pirate game? AC Black Flag

My favorite pirate rpg? Skies of Arcadia. You get to be a sky pirate on a flying f'ng pirate ship.

Does Uncharted 4 count? I know you don't play as a pirate, but the entire game is centered around pirate lore and treasure.

While not exactly totally about pirates and such along with it being a much older series if you have an old SNES look up the uncharted waters series. Though beware game is pretty hard lol. Well made game though that is fairly famous for the odd genre it is.

If you like things such as trading and exploring you might enjoy the game. Though you can be a pirate too and jack other trade ships and such. Makes the game insanely hard though as the royal navy will be constantly chasing your ass if you go that route.

Also dont play this if you are averse to stress lol

I played this for hours on PC, in DOS with EGA graphics.

Suikoden IV is about sailors. The protagonist army's fortress is a humongous ship and it even has strategic naval battles.

The story leaves a lot to be desired, though.

Not too bad of a suggestion....HOWEVER! The lack of fast travel kills this game as half of the time will be you just sailing.....

I'd suggest Rogue Galaxy! You not actually pirates though....YOU'RE SPACE PIRATES!!!

Edit: For Tales of Berseria...you're not actually Pirates though.... one of your party members is and you use his ship for transportation. You don't even do anything pirate-like except for that expedition bit....which you don't even take part in.

There should be a Black Flag 2 that drops the AC ties, and rather puts more emphasis on RPG elements and exploration. That's still the best pirate game to date IMO.

Check out Sunless Sea. It's very lore heavy and more about sea exploration than pirating (even though there are pirates in it) and it may scratch that itch.

The pirate concept is not as heavy as compared to other games but it's there and the cast you use are part of the pirate crew, namely Eizen as the primary pirate (i guess you can say Velvet is a pirate too) and you travel by sea on a pirate shup. What works is that in this game you use the "bad guys" trying to take down the good guys and is a huge change of pace compared to the other Tales games. The cast is certainly "villainous" and the chemistry really works. The battle system may seem repetitive a bit but it's still mashy fun.

Compared to Xillia and Zestiria, Berseria is godsend. The former 2 games come of as rushed IMO and a bit generic IMO.

Is this the most recent Tales game? I'm definitely interested. Last one I played was Xillia which I did like.

It's not an RPG but I fucking loved sailing around taking boats etc in Black Flag. That was so much more fun than any of the actual story.

Where can I find this game? What platforms was/is this on? Its not the "Worlds End" version is it. Thats all I can find.

It was available for the original XBOX and PC. I don't know how it is on the XBOX.

The game is not on Steam. Maybe you can find it at game stores. I also was not able to get it working on new Windows versions though that is probably more to do with my inability.

I lost the original boxed game ages ago, and since the developer is not around I was not really morally felt bad about downloading the game from other means.

It also has a active community for Mods, did not really try them tho.

I'll add +1 to AC Black Flag.

Not really an rpg, but It's open world and you can upgrade character and ship, so it's something. Apart from that, there's a lot of mechanics that make it a good pirate game:
Sailing
Climbing up the sails
Naval combat
Boarding enemy ships
On-foot combat
Exploring islands
Searching for treasure with treasure maps
Diving and whale fishing
and more

There's something magical in sailing to an island, seamlessly letting go of the wheel, running to the side of your ship, diving into water and swimming to the island to look for treasure.

Not an RPG, more of an action adventure, but Pirates: Legend of the Black Kat on the PS2 and OG Xbox was just janky enough to be charming back in the day.

Bonus points: Giant enemy crabs with frickin' pirate skull shells!

I generally roll my eyes at the romanticism of piracy, so I'm not surprised there are very few pirate RPGs. It's hard to systemise the raids, rapes, disease, and slavery aspects that are key to the pirate experience, and still have a likeable cast. You'll have to start cutting large swats of what defines your concept, or make crew that distinctly rejects all of that, yet still carries the pirate moniker for... reasons. That's fine I guess, since people obviously like the aesthetic and roguish vibes. To me it comes across to making a Klansman With The Heart Of Gold story though.

Now that I'm done raining on the parade, I guess I should contribute. Skies of Arcadia is probably the closest you'll get to a pirate RPG, since it leans heavily into the ships and integrates them well into the gameplay. The game itself is well-made and quite a lot of fun. That game does have a pirate captain with a distinct lack of colossal sea dragons for a pet however.

Steamworld Heist is may be a bit light on RPG elements to fully call it an RPG, but it otherwise does a great job at presenting a steampunk cowboy pirate story. Most of the traversal is on a simple map screen though, so it lacks the seafaring aspect. It too lacks a leviathan-propelled ship unfortunately.

I like my bros Faris and Syldra.

Rogue Galaxy is a pirate RPG... in space!

Skies of Arcadia is a pirate RPG... in the sky!

I mean if you really think about it the sky is kinda the same as the ocean, just without water.

I am actually shocked Ubi did not make a separate Pirate-themed IP after the success of Black Flag. They nailed so much right. Naval Battles were soo good. So much potential.

played this non-stop this was one of the most addicting games

Pirates of the Caribbean had RPG elements to land and sea

Yes! Published by Bethesda rather than developed by the Elder Scrolls team, but had a lot of similarities with its open world approach of "go anywhere, do anything". For its time this game was visually stunning as well.

Black Flag and the semi-sequel Rogue shouldn't be overlooked either, so long as you embrace the RPG-light aspects. You're still upgrading your ship and character, and exploring an open world.

This thread points out that we are in dire need of a current-gen pirate game. C'mon Sea of Thieves, be good.

Its a damned shame we do not get single player games like this anymore. Though for online stuff I think an online version of Uncharted Waters exists. Not sure what regions its for though.

And basically Eve Online is Uncharted Waters in space lol. Well in the sense of being full on do whatever you want with exploration, trading, etc. Super hardcore stuff that basically turns into a second job.

Though for such an old series it was a fairly well made one thats for sure.

Actually wait to be fair I have not tried the remake of Sid Meier's Pirates!. I should do that sometime soon...

im reading up on these games and they sound amazing!
would you say city of abandoned ships is better than their newest game, To Each His Own?

From what I read TEHO is less open.

I've never actually played TEHO because I heard it wasn't great.

Sid Meier's Pirates!

I was the most vile motherfucker on the ocean! Never took prisoners, sacked every single town I came into, so much fun with this one!
