Has Wii U secretly been delayed, or is N screwing up big time?

well production is about to start any day now, if it didn't already... I believe 360's were starting to get manufactured around this time for their launch in November 2005...
IBM shipped the first microprocessor for Wii on the 8th of September, 2006: http://www-03.ibm.com/press/us/en/pressrelease/20213.wss

That's more than two months before release (19th of November). I don't know when product assembly started though.

I know all about ninjas and NDA's xD but I mean WHY?

What if devs want to publicize their games? I guess what devs wants is people to know their game.

Remaining questions to be answered (from a previous thread):

- the OS: how do the menus look like on the tablet? What apps are included, will it get news, weather apps like on Wii? Will we have swap note as on 3DS? What else?
- The online store: what amount of content will it have? Will VC games be playable on the GamePad with the TV off?
- The online capabilities: will it be close to the PS3, x360? What will Miiverse bring in each launch game?
- Instant messaging and video chat: can it be accessible anytime/in-game?
- The TV remote: how well will it work to control a not too complex set-up?
- The different user accounts on the tablet: what kinds of asynchronous apps will there be? Will I be able to send messages, drawings or to do lists to other family members?
- The bundled apps: will there be any? Nintendo Land, Panomara view?
- The bundled hardware: will a wiimote be included? With Motion+?
- The final builds: how games will look once completed? Better than on PS3/x360 in AC, Mass Effect or Fifa? What will be the critical reception of games like Zombi U and Nintendo Land?
- The extra content in Game & Wario, Rabbids and Nintendo Land: how deep will it be? Can mini games be played online? Will each one have leaderboards?
- The streaming range: how strong will it be? Does the console needs to be plugged to the TV with the HDMI cable to start streaming, or can it stream with the power cord only, plugged in any room?
- The 2012 japanese third party line-up: what unannounced games will make launch?
- The 2013 lineup: what upcoming games will be revealed by year's end?
- The console price: how affordable will it be?
- The colors: will the black Wii U be available at launch?

Iwata said to investors competition was the reason why secrets were kept. It looks like Nintendo is betting on a blitzkrieg, with a full unveil close to launch.

What I don't understand is why the third party devs can't talk about their Wii U projects...

Well, Nintendo said they learned their lesson with the 3DS. While that includes pricing, I also believe Nintendo was talking about their schedule of releasing information. The 3DS E3 blowout was the height of the handheld's hype. Things began to go downhill after that, with announcement of price, online plans, and launch window software. With WiiU, they specifically have only talked about launch window software, probably to keep expectations in check. When Nintendo holds their next Nintendo Direct and their Fall Conference, I expect them to not only announce online, launch, and pricing plans, but also have a blowout on what will becoming in 2013 and potentially beyond. This way, hype will be at its highest one-two month(s) before release, and (presumably) more people will buy the WiiU day one.

Hey, Reggie's surprisingly ripped. I'd love to see more.

What is this Fall conference people keep talking about? Can someone link me to where Nintendo announced this conference? Or are you just talking about the usual Investors Q&A?

Speculation, but at this point (and looking back on history) September seems to be the month release all Wii U details. Plus, Iwata announced that for the Japanese games to be revealed you had to wait a bit longer.

I think there's only been one year in this generation in which Iwata didn't hold his very own event around the same time as TGS.

Two months prior to launch has been the Nintendo M.O. for two launches now (both Wii and 3DS).

Maybe it would have been wise to do it earlier, but it's definitely not strange for them to do it this way.

Pretty much this. I think it's stupid they've waited this long but all the info will come. They will concentrate their marketting budget and hype creation into one big-bang. I can see price cuts coming from SONY and MS and they will be trying to market their consoles, so Nintendo has to skyrocket above that to get attention. Hopefully they've realised they are launching a new console and need to actually push it.

That, or they're fucked.

Well, Iwata sort of mentioned it at the latest Investor meeting.

Iwata said:
Among some news reports, a report I was particularly disappointed with was that the announcement of the launch date and the price (of the Wii U) was postponed. We made a statement in public before E3 that we would announce neither the launch date nor the price (of the Wii U) at E3. It’s nothing new at all because, when we introduced the Wii, the Nintendo DS and the Nintendo 3DS, we didn’t announce the launch date or the price at the E3 shows, either. Nevertheless, what was reported in the media was that, in the context, postponement of the announcement regarding the launch date and the price was due to lack of confidence. This type of news somehow affects consumers’ minds and that would have had an impact on the share price as a result.

Finally, another issue is that the visibility of the future software lineup is unclear. During E3, titles for the overseas markets were highlighted and the titles we introduced then were only the ones to be available at the launch time and within the launch window period, which might make you wonder, “What will become of the software in the next year?” It is our intention to convey a strong message this fall with the information about the price and the launch date and then to create momentum good enough to convince our consumers to buy (the Wii U), but currently, there must be some concerns. Overall, we believe that the current share price has been determined based on what I mentioned today. In the near term, with the introduction of the Nintendo 3DS XL followed by new software titles in July and August, the most important issue is to what degree we can change the business momentum of the Nintendo 3DS in the world. Then, subsequently, when we launch the Wii U, we intend to announce the next step by saying what will happen in the future, and by doing this, we would like to change the evaluation in the market.

No.

Let's test Jackson, guys:

Should we buy Scribblenauts?

Yes! (But my NDA ninja's won't let me say anything beyond that lol.)

I'm actually really excited to be a "launch window" title. I've never experienced that in my career, it's actually one of my bucket list items. So I'm pretty stoked for Wii U's launch. I wouldn't have made another Scrib on the platform if I didn't think it was worthwhile.

Jackson, what are the major differences between the 3DS and WiiU Scribblenauts Unlimited games? If you can say, of course. :p

It's still supposed to be out this year right? Less than 5 months left of the year (and we're talking the absolute end of the year, not the holiday season) and we still have no idea about releasedates (even for Japan), launch line-up, available colors and loads of other info. It feels like this device is still a year away, to me atleast.

This is typical Nintendo

Being American, I initially read "at the till now" as "at the until now" and was as confused as all hell get out.
Maybe I was Brittish or whatever this is, in a past life because although I never heard the word, I instantly understood "till" as "register" or "checkout".

But Nintendo would never miss this holiday launch. There's too much riding on the holiday, the hardware and the jump on the market before the more powerful systems launch. Nintendo needs this time to get established.

What exactly are they supposed to do?

They've clearly got one little press event left in them before launch. They've got to announce the price, the line-up, the date, maybe an announcement or two to stir up some hype...

It's not like anyone sane is going to say "well they didn't say anything in August, therefore I no longer care".

Check out this month's Nintendo Power, we're the cover story and it goes into 10 pages of detail about both versions. :)

The general NDA has some loopholes (which I won't talk about), so there is more Nintendo could do. If another NDA has been issued beyond the development/engineering NDA I don't know, but seeing so very little information is being distributed it wouldn't make me surprised.

Nice to see your excited about what opportunities given to you may bring. I'd be excited to take a look at Wii U out of an engineering standpoint. I got some game ideas brewing but unfortunately very little money for it (outside development under Windows), and you know that Nintendo won't accept any garage developers.

What do you mean?

-It won't have an OS
-It won't have an online store
-There are no online capabilities
-No instant messaging
-No TV remote
-No multiple accounts
-No bundled apps
-No hardware
-There won't be a final build
-No extra content in those games
-No streaming range, the controller has to be held next to the console
-No japanese third party games
-It will be cancelled by 2013
-There won't be a price
-There won't be any colours

Well, this is NeoGAF. Expect people to start getting impatient and flip their shit in many threads to come.

3DS XL is the real relaunch of the device. It makes sense they are letting it have its moment to shine. It needs its moment so they can start trying to build momentum in the west.

Wii U being a totally new device will get its prelaunch hype train started in full after the XL launches

I sure hope all these are answered before launch. The moment they are, I'm happy to hop back on the Hype Train (tm), but until then I'm remaining a cynical bastard.

It will make holiday shopping, now what games make it before the end of the year is what I want to see, from what I have played it seems Pikmin 3 and NSMBU are the only two I'd describe as good to go (exclusives anyway.)

Did some people suddenly forgot that Nintendo reveals release date and prices for their consoles in Fall?

It's coming in November.

Nintendo will announce the official price and date at the Tokyo Gameshow.

Nothing to see here, move along folks!

I was fucking abusing that website looking for a wii.
Oh man, memories. I think I used one that sent me a text message when Amazon got them in stock. My main concern was getting one in time for the Brawl release. :)

*edit* Wait, I posted in the thread without asking Jackson a question.

Jackson! Will Scribblenauts on PC release before the end of the year, since you mentioned the Wii-U launch window?
