Has Your City Been "Open Worlded?"

I've heard from other gamers they did a pretty good job if making it feel like Seattle (it wasn't supposed to be a 1 to 1 recreation).

I know that but for me it felt like some total other city. Makes me wonder how much gta v would feel like lots angelos or fallout 3 like DC if I actually lived there and was more familiar (maybe I have a hard time stepping back from where it is different but then I just want recognizing anything really other than the needle).

But nothing looked familiar and I know alternate reality but all that colorful neon is nothing like Seattle. For whatever reason despite living with grey skies a lot people really like black, white, and grey colors here. It is not a colorful city (kinda a pet peeve of mine. We get enough grey in our skies, do all our houses and cars have to be so drab too?).
 
My city was sort of featured in San Andreas, just part of downtown though. It got dropped in GTAV. There's a little more in the Crew, and downtown is in a few other racing games.
 
Forza Horizon is far out of the city and surrounding suburbs, so it's all foothills, trees and small towns. Doesn't even have Colfax.
 
Yes. Infamous 3 (Seattle) and the city did not feel like Seattle and wasn't all that recognizable except the space needle. It's as if they thought if they put that in people would just think it looked like Seattle just for having that. And the developer is from this area! So they should be really familiar with it.

I'd love to see how rockstar or Bethesda would do this city.

Yeah. They took a lot of liberties on making it to the point where it wasn't all that recognizable as Seattle.

Would love to see another devs take on this city.
 
Osaka was kind of open worlded in Yakuza 2. Other than that, can't think of any.
 
Los Angeles in GTAV was almost perfect, both sights and atmosphere. Only things that were missing/innacurate where The Valley and Koreatown.

Agreed. The city felt nothing at all like Seattle. For one why is half the city on an island? Did everything south of the city fall into the sound? Where are the bridges? Two the geography is completely off. Given the city is founded on a series of hills it is far too flat. Third, the color palette is way off. I have never seen so much neon ever in this city. Fourth, the whole thing feels incredibly compressed.
 
I first would say no, who the hell would make a small Belgian town like Ghent into an open world game? Then I remember they did a very shitty game tie in with a cop show taking place in Ghent years and years ago. Never played it. Looked trash.

LA. So, yeah a lot but it's weird because I don't think there's a game that did a 1:1 scale of the city. Maybe LA Noire but that was the 50s.

True Crime has a surprisingly accurate map of LA, but obviously it's fairly primitive by today's standards.

In atmosphere, sure, but in actual street accuracy and geography, GTA5 is Cliff's Notes. They squish tons of neighborhoods and distinct locations together.
 
Would be interesting to see the Virginia Peninsula done in a game. Hampton, and Norfolk to be specific. Virginia Beach would be cool as well.
 
No never, I had hopes for a sequel to Assassin's Creed Unity set in Vienna during the Congress of Vienna, given that we had already met Napoleon and Arno being half Austrian I thought chances were actually there to actually happen.

Game was mediocre though and Arno not particularly endearing.
 
open world tokyo would be the most amazing thing

I'm from MA so I'd say the same thing about Boston (my hometown is too boring and shitty to be in a game). Guess Fallout 4 has that covered though.
 
I live less than an hour from Seattle, so yeah I guess you could say Infamous Second Son did it. I don't know though, the game just didn't capture anything about what makes Seattle so special in my opinion, it could of been any city in the world and nothing of substance about the game outside of the NPC and character designs would of been any different. I wouldn't mind something like The Getaway that takes place in Seattle and actually does it justice.

Wow, i'm in Geelong too. I always dreamed about a 1:1 realisation of Geelong or Melbourne in a video game as I was growing up. Imagine a new GTA set in Melbourne that'd be nuts.
 
I don't think gamers would be blown away by the map size of an open world game set in Dublin. Nor the verticality of it, when I can reach the top of the highest building if I go on my tippy toes.
 
Soma is the only game I can think of that showed anything from Toronto and that's obviously not an open world game. I think it'd be a good city for that though.
 
Nancy, France. And... Nope! No open world games here. That's too bad, I always wanted to have some bullet times on Place Stanislas, one of the prettiest place/plaza in the world.
 
They did Paris in The Saboteur but I haven't played that so I don't know how accurate it was. Wonder if it'd be worth a playthrough nowadays, I kinda dug the setting.
 
Didn't Test Drive Unlimited 2 do a full scale representation of some places in Hawaii using satellite data?
 
I doubt an arbitrary little village in the Netherlands will ever be "open worlded". In fact, there's multiple ones with the same name in the Netherlands alone.
 
...and if so, how did they do? Share some comparison. Could you see your house?

I still need to pick up Forza Horizon, how's "Colorado?" Is there much to "Denver?"
Interesting. There's a decent chance my apartment in Denver would be there. I'll probably never get a chance to find out though.

Anyone can replicate the thrill of playing an open-world game set in Geelong.

Just create a new Monogame project in Visual Studio and press Start.
 
Not quite but it was pretty awesome to see Vancouver as a major Earth city in Mass Effect 3.

Closest to being 'open worlded' would be the railway bridge in GTA V.

GTA V had 1 location from each of the other Rockstar offices. So, Los Santos has one landmark that's from Toronto for Rockstar Toronto, and one from San Diego for Rockstar San Diego. There was also one for Rockstar Vancouver, but it's from outside Van in BC near Banff and the Alberta border.

Specifically, Stoney Creek Bridge is what the GTA V Raton Canyon bridge was based on, and I grew up about an hour 'as the crow flies' away. Close as I get to the OP title phrase.

Lille was the basis for a post-apocalyptic MMORPG called Leelh. It ran from 2010 to 2013. I never got to try it so I can't really comment on it, but judging from the comments, the world was good, but the game wasn't.
 
El Paso was in The Crew but it was not represented well at all. Nothing recognizable and I'm fairly certain is was in the wrong spot on the country map.
 
As someone has already said, Edinburgh was in PGR but we've never had the rockstar or bethesda treatment despite rockstar north being based in the city
 
There's a small fragment of Newcastle as a hidden level in the first Driver, because the developer is based there. That's probably all there'll ever be of my city in games.
