Have Video Games Changed or Have I?

You might also be over-GAFinated. People on this site can either be very analytical or hypercritical about small things when discussing games. That's not a good mindset to be in if you want to get immersed in a game world.

So maybe stop following games online for awhile and then try playing again? Did you need GAF to enjoy Halo 3 when you were a kid??

Take a break from GAF and video game for a few months, watch movie/book/anime/outside/etc instead. You will find yourself enjoy gaming again.

Sounds like you need to look for genuine fulfillment in your life. Videogames aren't it.
Yep. Video games are usually just a fun distraction.

At the end of the day I can only sit alone in front of a screen for a little while before I feel that creeping emptiness. Life is lived outside of our computer screens.

Local multi games with good friends can sometimes be fulfilling, though.

I almost quit gaming after being stuck with PS360 AAA titles, I learned that I should keep thinking the games that are crap, are actually crap, even if people find it offensive and think I'm biased towards Nintendo.

This gen is easily the worst gen so far, and that's not so bad considering I have more time to know about underappreciated games (Opoona, Elebits, Clock Tower, Katamari, Echo Night, God Hand, Deception), there are plenty of games that deserve more love compared to the trash being release to critical acclaim.

Funny thing is, both my favorite PS360 exclusive titles (EDF and Folklore) feel like PS2 era games, games this gen clearly lacks. Maybe you need more "fun" games.

How much time you dedicate for gaming? I'm starting to realise that when I was little, ironically, I didn't have that much time or autonomy to game anytime I wanted. As you get older you can call your own shots pretty much, and maybe that's part of the reason.

Also, at some point in an obsession to try to beat basically every game in existence, gaming started to become a checklist thing for me and that's a no no. I'm trying to get away from this mindset as it's horrible

XB1 seems underwhelming when compared to XB360.
PS4 the same. Wii U was the shortest living Nintendo console.

If you were happy in 2007 when Sega was no more, then in 2001 you would be in heaven.

Now with online we're in existentialist hell

It's the nature of humans to crave new and exciting experiences.

It's why "your first time" is always best.

Videogames aren't necessarily worse.. They just haven't given us much more than we've already experienced over and over again.

Videogames are fun, but at the end of the day, it's just consumption. Look for opportunities to create or contribute something, or to develop yourself. I'd bet you'll experience that sense of satisfaction you're looking for.

Both games and you have changed.

This seems more like you feeling down in general and projecting this on games a bit. Purely from the gaming side point of view I'd advise trying something a little out of your comfort zone.

It's not so much offensive as much as just it's you not looking outside a bubble. PS360 AAA titles weren't even a fraction of the total gaming landscape, and gaming overall has only really gotten better over the years.

Everything sucks more when you grow up.

Games.
TV.
Movies.
Music.

Enjoy the sex while that lasts too.

That's just life. Try to do things that make you proud of having gotten out of bed in the morning. Use entertainment to fill the gaps around those other things.

Ha ha, I love both the cynicism and the wisdom of this post.

I definitely am depressed.

Part of depression, as you probably know, is losing interest and enjoyment in things that were formerly interesting and enjoyable. I'd guess that this is mostly a part of your depression. Looking to different genres or wondering about whether games have changed, etc., is probably barking up the wrong tree.

I would focus on trying to help myself through the depression, if I were you. Do whatever you do to get yourself through it. Be good to yourself. Don't take your thinking about gaming (or anything else) too seriously, when you're depressed. Depression can really skew your perspective.

Things will look a lot different once the clouds lift.

The GAF effect is real. GAF goes crazy on awesome a game will be before the release and then how crappy it is after release. Avoid GAF threads until you finished a game.

It's easier to find fulfillment from videogame when you are a kid because life is much simpler. As an adult there are far more better things you can be doing than playing videogames.

Also you've played hundreds of games since so each game is going to have less and less impact.

In short find something else to do that isn't just videogames

I think games right have changed and there's now a lot more of variety in them. Granted not so much in the AAA industry but in the indie scene you can literally think what kind of game you want and most likely there would be an equivalent indie game.

Games now are more than likely targeting specific audiences so all you need to do is find out what kind of game you want.

Most of the time as a kid you do not notice the finer detail of games such as frame rate, graphics and sometimes game mechanics because you played games to have fun. As an adult it is much easier to notice those finer details and for me in particular notice when good writing is happening in a game.

I have the opposite feeling. I'm more overwhelmed now than at the same time last gen, and in a good way.

Same with movies, you already have seen a lot and there is barely anything new that will truly surprise and shock you. You have that as a kid a lot. VR is the next best thing that brought me back to those days at the moment but it is still not the same.

I usually don't take the time to really apreciate anything anymore, even if I have nothing planned, internally I always have a clock ticking. That's also something I didn't feel as a kid, time seemed endless, didn't think about what I would do in a few hours, didn't care about when it was time to sleep etc.

well, I used to play constantly and now I'm in your very same situation. the only difference is that I've been feeling like this for a while and I've started to accept it. I just don't force myself to play anymore.

but I also realized that I actually haven't changed... the industry has. I started playing "retro" games that I hadn't played at the time, and I noticed that they tend to grab my attention a lot more.

games that I find wholly unappealing have always existed (mmorpg, for example), it's just that they are way more prevalent and some of my favorite genres aren't (3d platformers, extreme sports games à la THPS, story-heavy non "corridor-like" FPS, adventure games,...).

but there are still recent games that grab me like how most games used to (doom and obduction come to mind)...
