Have you ever ACTUALLY BOUGHT an "Online Pass?"

I pre-ordered the Hardened Edition of MW3, which includes an Elite subscription.
I don't think that really counts. OP is asking used game buyers if they ever buy/bought Online Passes available on XBL/PSN for their used games.

I then asked if those who did buy them felt that they were worth the money, and if so, why.

I mostly buy PC games, and the only online multiplayer games I ever play are Team Fortress 2 and (occasionally) Left 4 Dead 2.

I buy online passes for games I don't own just to support developers.
I haven't gone that far, but I did buy useless DLC for motorstorm apoclypse just to throw some money Evolution's way since MS:A didn't sell that well.

I've bought online passes a few times. It's either when I get a game from Goozex or the library. I'm still saving money vs buying new, but I still always try to ask my Gamestop friends if they have any extra first.

I rent most of my games so I do buy the "Pass" if I think its worth it. So far I got it for Alice Madness Returns cause I wanted to replay the original, and I'll probably gonna get the Batman one too.

No, I usually buy games new. In the places where I shop for games the price difference between new and used copies of some titles are less than the price for the pass itself.

i think it's too early to tell. These things are still relatively new.

Wait a year and ask again if people bought Battlefields or Resistances etc. used.

Yeah, none of the games are really old enough TO be bought used, and if you did that you either didn't know about the pass thing or didn't care about online at all anyway. In a few years though at least a few of the games may be more practical to buy used than new.

I know this is a poor group to make a decision from, but it doesn't seem like online passes are at all meaningful.

People seem to either buy the game new or just not buy the game at all.

I borrowed my bro's copy of Mass Effect 2 back in the day and payed the $10 or $15 for the Cerberus Network.

Thats all though, I swear!

I have never run into online passes on console games. I mostly buy new copies of games, but I don't actively look for new copies. Aka. I don't buy console games when they are new, ever. Always wait 6-10 months and buy dumpster priced copies, the games are still 'new' though.

Which games have online passes?

My copy of BFBC2 was free from a friend, so buying an online pass was an easy decision to make. It's the only pass I've bought so far, but it's easily justifiable.

With the exception of BFBC2, any game I plan on playing heavily online I buy day 1 so an online pass isn't an issue. However, I wait on single player games most of the time, since I don't allot much time for them anymore. If Arkham City hasn't hit $30~35 by the time I'm ready to let up on BF3, I'll probably buy it used and buy the Catwoman pass (assuming it's still significantly cheaper than a new copy).
.

I bought the LA Noire pass. So much for supporting Team Bondi. I haven't even played LA Noire yet :P It was on sale which is why I bought it

Not yet.

But I plan on buying "Alice: Madness return" used and then buy the first game from PSN.

Oh!
And I'm boycotting "Archam City" despite my initial plans on buying this game on lunch!

if a game has an online pass, i will most likely skip it just because of that.

Will also never buy a game new that has one.

Never. And I avoid games that include them - single player games especially.

I've never even bought a game that had one, and I don't expect to.

No and I'll do my best to avoid buying any game, new or old, that promotes this practice.

Is this because:
  • You would have otherwise bought a game used and don't consider it worth buying used without online functionality?
  • You would have bought a game new, but don't want to buy any games with online passes on principle (even though you wouldn't be getting less for your money than if it didn't have a pass)?

I never did because I buy most of my games new and those that I buy used are older games before the online pass crap happened.

Never got one. The few games that require that I usually get them on day one.

If there's a game that I'm waiting for a price drop, like Resistance 3 I wait until he gets cheaper and order it.

It's better than getting it used because it can go for the same price or even cheaper. Plus, it's new.

LA Noire.

I'll only EVER do it if I decide I want all the DLC.

Most games, I could give 2 shits.

edit: oops. Oh you mean access to multi buying used.

Hell no.

I bought this LA Noire one too in the XBL sale half price for 600 points the same time I bought the game on discount.

Yeah for Bad Company II but that was before I was aware of their existence and stupidly cheap'd out on a second hand copy.

Oh and LA Noire...but I don't really count that because it was all DLC (I bought the game new but still got screwed; with the GOTY edition coming out soon).

I wanted to buy the "Online Pass" for Arkham City, but seeing that most people are disappointed with Catwoman I don't think I'm going to.

note: I didn't buy it used, my little brother bought it and although I wanted to buy the PC version, that one got delayed and I just played the 360 version.

I redeemed my Dead Space 2 online pass even though I never wanted to (and never did) play a single online match. I thought that's how I'd get my DS Ignition. Alas, I was wrong and devalued my copy for nothing. How silly is that?

I already answered in the negative, but I feel that I should elaborate, since this is a complex topic.

Both of these. As far as I'm concerned, online play (multiplayer or not) is a part of the package, not just an additional mode separate from the rest of the game. When I pay for the game, new or used, I expect the game as a whole to be the full product and to work as advertised. I don't accept that the cost of running servers is any excuse, especially since the vast majority of console online games are P2P. Though that may be my entitled British arse talking, but whatever.

Note that I'm not talking about day-one/pre-order DLC like the Karkand pack or Catwoman, which are a different (though no less onerous) anti-consumer practice. I'll just wait for the GOTY Edition of games that have those, unless I can get a great deal on a pre-order or promotional item (like Arkham City), or I can get a cheap new copy a few months down the line. Patience is a virtue.

No, and there will be no time in the foreseeable future that I ever would buy one. I have bought a few used games, but generally the split is usually like 65% new, 35% used. And mostly the used games are usually games that I didn't get around to at the time for whatever reason.

Even if I wanted to play online, or give it a try, I am not going to shell out $10 to maybe like it.

Never have never will.

I always worry that I will buy an online pass for a game 2 months old to find no one is online playing it, online passes have a high chance of killing the online user count very easily.

I always buy new where possible also.
