Have you ever been to work with no sleep?

Getting candy from the vending machine really helps along the day. I usually use my lunch time and nap in the car if I end up with no sleep.

You can do it. I've done it a few times. You just sort of have to run on autopilot and accept you're not going to be as quick as usual. Double check yourself if the possibility of critical errors exist, and have someone else check what you remain unsure of. Maybe grab a coffee (or two) for the commute. And try not to do it again.

As long as you keep moving you should be alright. It's when activity stops or you hit dead time that your body will decide it's out for the day.

Whoever said that they're worried more about driving to work and back on no sleep than working is right. By the time you get thru your 8-10 hour day at the office with no sleep, driving home is a rough experience.

I work night shifts and there were several days I thought I was off but I had to work that night so I go in with no sleep.. Horrible

A few times during college. Basically I'd be useless and the best I could do was try not to get in anyone else's way.

Well I'm home and I survived. I basically sat in a chair all fucking day. Don't even want to guess the amount of times I caught myself nodding off.

A few times. Besides some general workdays, I did on the first day for both of the jobs I've had. I also did it for the interview for the job that I currently have. (For some reason, I did not have caffeine on those days.)

It's not fun, but it's doable.

a few times and it sucks.

Although I find the new job sleeplessness to not be a problem because you stay wired (it's not yet a routine). You should be fine.

Used to be able to do this but now I'm 30 I need a solid sleep to not feel like shit.

No sleep was always tough but even 2 hours could easily see me through a work day

Don't be like that other GAF member and leave the job if you don't get any assignments for the first few hours and are left to sit at a desk doing nothing. The sleep deprivation might make you consider such.

I once had recently started a new job, but had made a prior commitment to act as a guide during Orientation week at University. Since I was still relatively new, I didn't feel comfortable with booking time off just yet. The job was graveyard shifts, and I hadn't yet made the transition to day shifts. So I went about 3 days on no sleep between my days being consumed by the orientation duties, and nights consumed by work. Never again

You made it. My anxiety has been messing with my sleep pretty bad the last while. I found melatonin has been helping me a ton the past week. They are cheap and can pick them up at any drug store. I just slip one 3mg tab under my tounge about a half hour before bed and im out like a rock. I'd recommend it if it persists.

I did this pretty regularly when I first started college.

My friend and I commuted 1hr to a university because they had a great computer science program, and we didn't live anywhere close to a university (only community college). So we would commute, spend all day there for whatever classes we needed, and then drive home.

Our first class was at 11am, and the last one ended at 10pm. So we were there for a long time. To compensate for not being able to work during the day, I got an overnight job at target.

So we'd arrive home at 11pm, and I would need to be at work at 1:30 am. So almost always I was sleep deprived. After 1 semester of this I quit my overnight job and moved closer to the university so I could have a more regular schedule.

Looking back, I don't know how I did it.

I've actually wanted to try that for a while but I've never gotten round to picking any up. After last night though I definitely will so thanks for the reminder.

I'm not the best sleeper but every once in a while I'll get a night where I'm up til 3/4am but last night was just ridiculous. The more I thought about it too the worse it got.

This happened on my first day of work as well, survive and take a power nap somewhere during lunch. Set the alarm on your phone first.

Yeah, when I was in my early 20s, I'd do weekend trips somewhat often, and I'd always time it so that I could go straight to work after getting back in town. Sometimes I'd sleep on the Greyhound/plane, but most times, I wouldn't, so I'd just chug a 5-Hour Energy and deal. It sucks, but I saw it as an acceptable sacrifice to have more time away. And I had a somewhat breezy office job, so it wasn't really that bad. If I worked construction or something, I would've been a mess.

I had trouble sleeping in the past, and I have a long ass work day and commute. Could never just go to sleep on work nights for some reason.

I then tried taking 3mg melatonin about 45min before I wanted to go to sleep, and then read on my kindle for about a half hour. By the time it hits about time I want to go to sleep, I'm either already nodding off while reading or tired enough to just get zonked out in about 5min.

So yeah, it may just be a placebo at this point(and possibly just reading may help) but I dont even care if its a placebo. Sticking with what works.

Oh completely. My last job I was on call 24/7. We had a bunch of events going on one Sunday evening, so I was up until 3 AM dealing with calls that should not have happened. About 1 1/2 later I get a call because a guy can't get into our warehouse. I wound up just staying at work and doing things then telling my boss "I am going home here shortly."

Yeah, shortly was like 2:30 pm.

The neighborhood dog was put down yesterday after a few weeks of painful cancer (a carcinoma that basically wrecked her from the inside). I got no sleep last night for that.

And now here I am, in the office, attempting to stay awake. I took a 15 minute nap an hour ago and will take a longer one in my lunch break, but this is hell.

I'm about to today.

Yes. I counted stock aka inventory at my store after having worked an 8 hour shift. Came back 2 hours later and stayed there for another 8 hours. 8-4 then 6-2 am. Unfortunately I was unable to sleep and I went back to work 8-2. Was not fun.

In my early 20’s I would go out Thursday night, play cards until dawn, stop home to shower/change and go to work Friday 8:30 AM …I was a mess that summer.

A couple of years ago we were trying to finish an iOS build of a game for PaxEast submission. The last two weeks of December went to the office worked all day, stop to grab dinner and then head home to work on sprites till dawn.

I work the graveyard shift so sometimes for whatever reason I cant / wont sleep during the day atfer a shift and then go to work again that night... it sucks and it rarely happens >_>

Once or twice I had maybe an hour sleep, it wasn't great.

Once summer I had a couple of different jobs, one of which was the night shift at a supermarket. It was normally ok because the jobs didn't overlap, but one week they did. So I remember one day I worked the night shift, came out at around 8, had my other job from like 2-10, and then had to be back at the supermarket at midnight. That was rough.

i had a coke fueled party crazy Tuesday night like a decade ago with this girl and before we knew it it was time to go to work

worst work day of my life

Yep, two times I can think of.

1) Black Friday shifts at Penney's. Working 7PM to 7AM, then having to be back at 2. Couldn't get any sleep between.

2) Working until midnight at my radio job, having to be back at 5AM. I just "slept" on the break room couch. Couldn't get any, and like 5-7AM was just monitoring and making sure nothing screws up. Almost nodded off more than a few times.

Coffee and try and keep moving around if you're doing nothing.

A couple times. It's not fun, but once get past that initial wall in the early morning or afternoon it's not hard to stay awake. But you still feel pretty bad.

Once, fairly recently. I was scheduled to work at 6am at my job and couldn't fall asleep. By 12 or 1am, I just said fuck it and decided to pull an all nighter. I slipped once or twice by 4, but I had a live stream of Ninja Gaiden 2 from Mike Matei to keep me up for the next few hours. Once I got back home from my job, I just had a meal and a smoke and crashed.

Never doing that again, if I can help it. It takes a little time, but your body clock will eventually synchronize with your work schedule.

Yes, when Bloodborne launched I play straight until I worked in the morning. I might do the same thing tonight with DS3.

Luckily I work from home, so I just napped during my breaks and lunch.

I work 12 hour shifts and my hours rotate from days to nights every 2 weeks. So there are some shifts where I go in with little to no sleep. It can be hard, but drink an energy drink and push through

I show up to work all the time without sleep, the main thing I find is to keep yourself busy. If you just sit around or something it can sneak up on you but as long as you're keeping busy I can't even feel tired at all.

Yea I have cycles where I can't get to bed until 3-5am and it progressively gets worse/later to the point I just force myself to stay awake and just crash after work to get back on a normal cycle. Then I start going to bed early and waking up super early for a time which is great, but then I begin to stay up later and later again until I am back at where I started. Could handle it pretty easily when I was younger but it's getting harder to handle as I've gotten older.

Yes, many times. In situations like yours, I find that the first day nerves keep me awake and I'm flat out as soon as I get home.

There was a lengthy period of time last year where I was getting very little sleep every single night and everyday I would find myself falling asleep while chatting to a customer (call centre job). The monotony and repetitiveness of the job was actually useful during this time, as I'd wake up to find I'd still managed to do the job. I probably just sounded really bored.

Seriously though, get some good sleep if you're in a job where you're stuck at a desk all day. You can probably get away with surviving most days if you're in a workplace where you can keep moving and busy but otherwise it's rough as hell.

I have been on a workshop last monday, we drank till 4:20 and i had to get up at 07:30 for the second workshop day. So two hours of sleep, and still drunk.

Thank God for unions.

Yes I have many times while being a warehouse worker, unfortunately it finally caught up with me and I got fried for making impaired decisions at work.

Avoid being in this situation at all costs, as it is one of my biggest regrets.

Yep. I've had stretches where I've been awake for 38+ hours and have worked two shifts over the course of two days.

It's hell, but at the time, I smoked a ton of weed to keep me awake for it.

Plus, it was just slinging tacos.

Many times. I stayed up all night knowing full well I had to be at work the next day at 7AM. (it was just a grocery store though) No real secret beside kind of powering through.

I have a bad habit of doing that when coming back to work from being on vacation at home. I always take like Sunday Night or Monday night "Red Eyes" back so that I can get back to the airport at like 5:45 or 6am and still make it to work by 8 or 8:30 am. It's great. I can be having a beer and dinner at 8:30 pm in the hills of the bay, and then drive down the peninsula to the airport still at 10:30pm to be on a flight at midnight. Plus the airport is dead at that time!

The next day is a little rough, but it is great getting an entire day at home before having to come back. Previously you would have a flight at 3pm or something in the afternoon to at least try to get back by a decent time at night. But then you basically have to get up in the morning and then straight to the airport.
