Have you ever bought a console for just one game?

Bought a Dreamcast back in the day just to play Shenmue. Still going strong. I even hook it back up once in awhile for the nostalgia hit.

I bought a Snes purely for Street Fighter 2. At the time the Mega Drive version was nowhere to be seen and that game was the only game that mattered to me at the time

I had a Wii U and sold it because there was nothing I wanted to play on it. I then bought another one a couple of months later just for Wind Waker HD. Played about 15 hours of it and haven't touched it since.

When I buy consoles at launch, I usually get multiple games. But with the purchase of the PS4 at launch, I broke tradition and got no games with it. I mean, I knew I was gonna get some free games with the system but there were no retail games I wanted at launch. If I had to pick the one game, it would be Resogun, which was still a free PS+ game.

Yes, I bought a GameCube just to play Resident Evil 4.

Sometimes I feel the urge to buy a Vita just to play Persona 4: Golden.

Usually it's one game that makes me buy it but I'll know there are other things coming that I want. At least when it comes to launches. But there has to be at least 1 game that I'm positive I'll like.

Like I bought a 360 for Dead Rising.
A Wii for Twilight Princess.
A 3DS for A Link Between Worlds
A Wii U for SM3DW.

I eventually bought a PS3 too, but that was really just to play PS2 games on, lol.

Playstation for Resident Evil 2
Dreamcast for Code Veronica
Gamecube for Remake
Playstaion 2 for MGS 2
Playstation 3 for Assassins Creed
360 for Gears of War

I mean I guess you could technically say most of the consoles I've bought or owned were for one game or rather influenced by wanting one game.

Most recently though:

PS3 - Demon's Souls (bought the console with the intention to import...game was announced as coming to NA a day later)
Wii U - Bayo 2 (lol it isn't even out yet)

SNES - Super Mario World
N64 -Super Mario 64
PS2 - Final Fantasy X
DC - Sonic Adventure
X360 - Dead Rising
PS3 - Metal Gear Solid 4

All I can think of right now.

PS Vita for Persona 4 Golden. I think thats the only one if bought for a game, and that's becuase I found a second hand (looks like new though) vita for dirt cheap

EDIT Holy shit, reading the whole thread, Sony needs to make a statue for Atlus, they are doing more with P4G selling vitas than anything they have done. Seems the thing would be more than dead if it was not for that game.

Got an N64 for Mario Kart
Got a Dreamcast for Sanic
Got a GameCube for Melee
Got Brawl BEFORE I got a Wii (shoutouts to Lunchables IWG)
Got a DS for Mario 64 DS
Got a 3DS for Mario Kart and Kingdom Hearts
Got a PS3 for Mahvel
Got a Wii U mainly for Smash Bros. 4 and MK8

If I knew the GBA had a Mario Kart, I'd have gotten the GBA much later than I did. Super Circuit wasn't planned for.

Only the Genesis, GBC and PS2 were gotten for other reasons (gift; gift; it was there so I took it). This is basically normal for me.

I think the true meaning of the term would be if you only had that game for the console. I bought a 360 just for Perfect Dark. Didn't have any other games for it at all.

No. But there has sometimes been one game that put me over the edge to buy a consoles--though I usually end up regretting it.

KOTOR got me to buy an Xbox 1. I played and liked some other games, but just didn't need it and wasn't really in to FPS yet which was a good chunk of the library.

Mario 3D World got me to buy a Wii U, despite having mostly hated the Wii. Enjoyed the game ok I guess, but sold the Wii U off a couple weeks back.

Otherwise, consoles have been bought for several games and never regretted.

I've seen this mentioned a lot and it's almost said that no-one buys a console for just one game and I wondered how true this is for most people.

I won't go too far back, but going as far back as the 360....

I bought a 360 for Condemned
I bought a PS3 for Resistance
I bought a Wii for Wii Sports
I bought a 3DS for Resident Evil Mercs 3DS
I bought a Vita for Wipeout 2048
I bought a Wii U for ZombiU
I bought a PS4 for Knack
I was going to buy an X1 for Dead Rising 3, but I was fortunate to receive one with the game as a gift.

I didn't give a second thought to any potential future line up when I bought the above consoles, I only gave thought to wanting to play the games I bought them with.

Is that strange? Has anyone else done it?

I'd argue that you likely didn't buy most of these consoles for just one game simply for the knowledge that as an early adopter you'll be given lots of software choices down the line. I don't think that's necessarily the same thing, but I did buy a late-gen PS1 just to play Resident Evil 1 and 2. And I bought an N64 8 months after launch just to play Mario. That one really worked out, given all the classics and future favorites the N64 would have.

I bought a 3DS for Super Mario 3D Land and Kingdom Hearts

I bought a Vita for P4G

Good thing both systems have more to offer than just that!

PSP for Peace Walker
3DS for OOT3D (never played a Zelda before then)
Wii for Skyward Sword ( because of OOT3D )
WiiU for Bayo2

Oh you Nintendo.

GBA for Pokemon FireRed
3DS for Fire Emblem Awakening
Wii U for 3D World
Vita for P4G

I am more of a handheld gamer and I missed out on the DS, Wii and PSP library so they were good choices for me.

I bought a Wii for Skyward Sword.

I kinda bought a 3DS for Fire Emblem Awakening. Although, that was really only the tipping point. Now, I really only play Super Mario Land 3D (fantastic game BTW).

Not a chance - every console I've purchased at least 20 games that I wanted, closest was 360 I got for fable, halo, fallout, borderlands ( with party chat)

I bought:

N64 for Ocarina Of Time

Xbox for Halo

Gamecube for RE:4

360 for Halo 3 (but had owned 360 before.)

Want to get a PS3 for Last Of Us next. Nothing on the new consoles I want that bad. Actually I'd like a WiiU if anything for Mario

I bought a PS3 for Twisted Metal 2 years before it was announced.

Bought an N64 for Goldneye, a 360 for Perfect Dark Zero and a PS2 for GTA3.

Every single time I buy a console, it is usually for one game.

Though recently I bought a Wii U after E3 2013 because of a the list of excellent games to come out this year, and W101 for last year.

I ended up buying many games for these systems (except Vita), but I bought them for these games.

PS3 - Ridge Racer 7
Xbox - Halo
Xbox 360 - Halo 3
Vita - Persona 4
PS2 - Devil May Cry

The only time I have was when I played the n64 on a demo unit when I was younger and was dazzled by Super Mario 64. I told my parents to get it for me on christmas for that game and of course I discovered many amazing games after that =) For xbox it was halo ce. Since then I have not really bought a console for one game only.

3DS for Pokemon Y. Although I was interested in Fire Emblem and Super Mario 3D Land too.

Couple months since I last touched it, so in hindsight it was a impulse buy...But I don't really regret it outright.

PS2 SotC and KH1/2.
PS3 for MGS4.
WII for Twilight Princess.

Will get Ps4 for FF15/LG/KH3 and WIIU for Smash Brothers 4.
