Have this quite a bit, every two or three months at least, half dreaming/half awake is the absolute worst state of being. Once you know the science of it it becomes more bareable.
Nowadays it takes me only a short time to realize in my dream what's going on and "will" my way into being fully awake, but there's still the terror at the start of not being able to move and wanting to, along with the sense of dread that something is behind you and you can't see what it is (at least that's what I get). Once I move I always jerk and kick the cat off the bed (she likes to nest between my legs at night), poor thing.
