Have you ever played a PERFECT game?

No such thing except in your mind, which I suppose is all that matters. Since this is 100% opinion based, I'd say the game I found that I enjoyed the most, and was so good that any flaws were not even noticed, would be Super Mario World. But this was largely due to when I played it- I was a teenager seeing one of my favorite game characters reborn in 16 bit heaven. And it had YOSHI!!!

I'd never find a perfect game now. I'm just too old and cynical, and do not appreciate games like I used to. But some recent great games have been The Last of Us and (don't hate me) Dragon Age: Inquisition.

Hindsight being 20/20 I would say no. But, there are a number of games that, at the time, were so head and shoulders above the rest that they seemed perfect. SMB3, Super Metroid and The Legend of Zelda all fit that bill for me. They were perfect for their time. The fact that they have stood the test of time and are still considered some of the best games ever means they aren't far off the mark.

There is no perfect game. You can find flaws on every one.
For instance, a few flaws from top notch games (which could be considered "perfect" for their time) I can remember from the top of my head:

The best game ever imo is Zelda Ocarina of Time.
-It runs around 20 fps
-The "stealth" sections in the castle are a drag

OT's Metroid Prime:
-End game fetch quest. It totally ruined pacing, which was almost perfect until then.
-Bosses were a little of a letdown, had a few good ones though
-Music wasn't as good as Super Metroid and thus lacked some of its atmosphere

Super Metroid:
- Too short
- Visuals were a mixed bag.

Soul Calibur:
-Some bad textures
-Uneven sound samples quality

BTW, I loved these games, and I consider them among the best of all time, it's just to show that every game can have flaws

But, considering "perfect" doesn't really exist, we can do a little exaggeration here and there, and give a name such a strong word if it stands above other games. It'll be our 10 which from all the others are judged.

Yes.

Yes, I have.

P.S. Just in case it needs to be said: Chrono Trigger

Journey, Persona 4 Golden, New Vegas, and Alpha Protocol. All 4 are amazing and just some of the best experiences I've had.

So many great games in here, I agree with man of them.

I'm going to have to add Assassin's Creed 2. At the time, at least, I couldn't find a single thing wrong with that game. The atmosphere, the gameplay, the music, the cities, the improvements over the first. It was easily the best game I played that year.

It's sad that we'll probably never have another Assassin's Creed that comes close to capturing how great ACII was.

I've never found any game to be perfect, but Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Resident Evil 4 come very, very close.

Regarding the latter, I don't think the ball dropped towards the end or that the castle lasted too long - the castle is full of nicely varied encounters and the game escalated into camp action territory (which was fine by me).

However, a lot of my favourites have plenty of flaws.

Tetris

That's the closest to the non-existent perfect game, although there are numerous games that I consider functionally perfect, in the sense that if I had the opportunity to change anything about them, I wouldn't. Chrono Trigger, Ouendan, Super Mario World, Street Fighter II Turbo, Portal, RE remake...

Some things are perfect. Getting 100/100 on a test = perfect. Nobody is perfect. But there can be perfect games for people because it's a matter of opinion.

My perfect games:

Super Mario Bros 3
Mario 64
Goldeneye 64
Socom 2
Command & Conquer Generals
Halo 1 and 2
Ori and the Blind Forest

I feel sorry for those saying there are no perfect games. There are.

You can play a game at a time in your life and have it perfect to that moment, the ones that spring to mind for me are :

Half life 2 and CS:S - loads of free time while at school meant i whittled away the hours with 24/7 office.

The order - More recent and definately contraversial. It was a fun, easy game to play through, the gameplay was satisfying without becoming boring, the story was enjoyable and (as a black bar hater) the ending sequence made me appreciate, more than any other media, the importance of framing a shot. Never will i aspect zoom again!

Halo - amazing co-op experience on my new black slab of a console, the dreamcast 2

Streets of rage 2- beat the shit out people for no reason.

La Noire - lost in the atmosphere, an easy game to play and fun to be involved in

Neir - I hated this game, i made fun of it, called the graphics crappy...then i played it. Never has a game had such an emotional impact than this one.

Dragons Dogma - The woods at night, attacked by a drake, fighting for my life to survive. The music, atmosphere etc. Perfect.

Gears of war - rolling with mates, blasting fools with shotties.

Advent rising - use super powers against aliens because you are god, force lift+push them into space while fighting outside of a space ship.

I could go on forever with perfect games. Enjoy what you play, don't be so critical or negative ;)

Seconding the "My Favorite Games: The thread" sentiments, but...

Age of Empires 2 - A desert island game if there ever were one.

Grand Theft Auto III - This has aged poorly, but it laid the groundwork for some of the great sandbox action games we got after. The feeling I got initially playing this game can't really be duplicated. For the first time I felt like eventually anything might be possible in a video game.

Red Dead Redemption - As with anything else this comes down to personal preference, but that game is like everything I wanted a video game to be. Ever since I can remember I wanted to be a cowboy in a western movie. RDR is the closest a video game has come to allowing people to live out that fantasy. Built on the idea that GTA III implanted in my mind.

I'm going to say perfect is subjective in this case, since we can find flaws in everything.

But my list of games that have a high pedigree of master design:

Super Mario Bros. 3
Doom
Doom II
Super Metroid
A Link to the Past
Super Mario 64
Metroid Prime
Resident Evil 4
Dark Souls

The original Prince of Persia is flawless in my book. I've played through it countless times, and the ports are usually very good too (sometimes even better). It's short, but that only makes it more replayable.

This is really a subjective question, but Halflife 2 is perfect imo. Mass Effect 2 also. I would also place Final Fantasy Tactics in there as well. Burnout Paradise is probably the greatest racer(arcade or sim) I have ever played.

Super Mario World would be the closest thing to "perfect" that I can think of. That or Super Mario Bros. 3.

EDIT:
Fuck how do I miss the obvious correct answer here? It's Tetris.

Nope, and it's probably one of the reasons I don't nitpick whatever small issues I come across in games.

Misplaced nostalgia makes for impossible standards, leading to disappointment and bitterness.

The only game I could actually say with full confidence that it's perfect is Super Mario Galaxy for me.

The camera was never a problem for me, the motion controls were perfect, and the game overall was just an incredible, unforgettable experience.

So I guess that would be my choice. Now that I think about it, though, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past comes at an incredibly close second.

Metroid Prime
Super Mario 64
Super Mario Bros. 3
Super Mario Galaxy
Super Mario World
Super Metroid
Terranigma (well, almost perfect)
Turrican 2

I think Ocarina of Time was perfect when it released. Nowadays it's not very playable since it's 20fps and the N64 controller is pretty bad

My man...

On Street Fighter games: they're great, but some of them are so flawed. World Warrior, for example, has no mirror matches, a bunch of game breaking glitches, and Guile is so far above the rest of the cast it isn't funny. Alpha 3 has V-ism crouch canceling, which completely breaks the game. HDR has some really bad balance changes from the original Super Turbo.

My favorite Street Fighter, which is Super Turbo, has playable Akuma and O. Sagat. It's flawed, which is why I haven't listed it.
