Have you ever played a PERFECT game?

Yup. In terms of I believe they were perfect in execution of their design intent and didn't contain major notable flaws technically I'd note:

  • ICO
  • Portal & Portal 2
  • Half Life 2
  • Silent Hill 2

Shadow of Colossus, System Shock 2 and many others are damn close but either have some issues technically (frame rate on SOTC sadly was somewhat an issue) or have slight flaws (ending of System Shock 2 is a little weak in execution for example).

I'd probably put original Elite and some other classic games as perfect too within limits technically of their time.

Metroid Prime is the closest thing there is to a perfect video game. However the artifact hunting is a slight dip (still really good). So I would not say it's literally perfect.

More perfect than OOT since that game was too similar to this one in structure.

Sorry guys, better than Ocarina.

Wonder if it is an age thing or something? But I agree.

First thing that comes to mind is resident evil 4, but that had escort missions. Escort missions which somehow don't ruin the game...Resident evil 4 is perfect.

I mean literally perfect (having no mistakes or flaws).

I have played one perfect game in my 15 years of gaming, and that game is Metroid Prime, everything about it is perfect.

In fact, Metroid Prime is the only perfect thing I have ever seen in my whole life. It got me questioning that popular saying "nothing is perfect".

So now I'm here creating this thread: have you ever played a perfect game?

And once again, I mean LITERALLY perfect.
Before I even clicked into the thread, the first thing that came into my head is Metroid Prime.

I recently picked up an 55" LG B6 OLED TV. Need to hook my GC up to it and bust out this game. ASAP.

Understandably there are a lot of nostalgia fueled choices in here (not that that discredits your opinion of those games being perfect.)

I'd go a bit more recent. I genuinely can't think of a single thing I disliked in The Swapper. It was as close to perfect as any game I've ever played.

Garbage tier

Could you elaborate on that? I thought it did exactly what it set out to do. There are games that I like better, but they all have some flaws.

The Witness is among my favourite games, but not all the way up in the top 3. But it is the only game I have played that I found to be truly without flaws

Super Metroid and Tetris are my answers.

I prefer Prime, but Super is a better game.

Yup, this game was pretty much as close to perfection as it gets. I want a Galaxy 3 so bad.

I would say it's 99% there. The 1% being the lame final level. Make me grind star bits for an hour straight to unlock the same level on a daredevil run? Seriously, FUCK that...

The Last of Us was the perfect game for me. Solid Gameplay, it wasnt too long or short, the entire experience made me think Video Games can be the best way to tell a story.

No game can ever be "literally" perfect. That being said, I'd say that BoTW is damn near perfect for me. It accomplishes everything it set out to achieve and is easily my favorite Zelda game now.

There is nothing I would change about Quake III: Arena.

Except maybe for the fact that it was so perfect it almost ruined my life.

You got good taste OP! Metroid Prime is the closest I've ever came to playing perfection and the other being close to perfection was Bloodborne. Both games nail the settings, gameplay, graphics (although I wish Bloodborne ran at a 60 FPS), and music perfectly!

Yea Tetris.
I remember my favorite round was where I was playing marathon mode and I was about to lose. I was dangerously close to the top, but somehow I managed to save myself and clear the entire board. It felt extremely satisfying. I ended up beating the game with that amazing comeback. Probably my favorite gaming moment of all time!

The first Phantasy Star (Master System). I love everything, everything, e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g about that game. I played it when it came out, I still play it today. Graphics, music, creature design, 3D dungeons, main characters, length, everything about it is perfect in my book.

Xenoblade Chronicles X got pretty close too, sadly character dialogue is awful :) Conversations never end and the script is just terrible (though I like the plot). However, considering how big and complex the game is, it's pretty impressive that the dialogue is my only complaint. Just like Phantasy Star, I can already tell I'll be playing Xeno X for years to come.

One game I loved everything about from the protagonist to the story to the graphics and sound and that was horizon. Was it perfect? No but close enough as I don't think any game will be perfect.

I was going to say no, but people posting LttP and Super Metroid changed my mind. Those games were mind-blowing back then, and they are still amazing today.

I might say Diablo 2 as well, although I'm not sure it's as timeless as LttP and Super Metroid. I'm not sure that gameplay loop holds me anymore.

No game is perfect, but Super Mario Galaxy 2 is a game I would not change a single thing about, so I'm going with that one.

Mario Galaxy 2 is as close to perfect as a game has been for me, but I would definitely do away with the motion-control Fluzzard levels.

Perfect Dark for me is the closest to perfection. Sure it had small issues (voice acting and frame rate in spots) but it was a complete package with a well-done single-player campaign, co-op and counter-op campaign modes, and a full-fledged multiplayer suite with bots, customizable weapon drops, etc.

Will forever love this game above all others.

Metal Gear Solid would be my next choice.

Yeah, RED DEAD REDEMPTION!

Aside from the empty landscapes, nothing to do, story that meanders etc etc. Red Dead Redemption is one of the most boring games I've ever played, and I loved GTA 5, Witcher 3 etc.

Witcher 3 is a masterclass.

Journey = amazing.
What Remains of Edith Finch = amazing.

For what those two set out to achieve, they are just excellent.

Did anyone notice that this was a year+ bump for quite literally no reason at all?

I can't pick a game for some reason. If a game is perfect then theoretically a sequel, remake or an enhanced port shouldn't be able to make it better. My "perfect" games had better sequels but I would pick them for their novelty.

Like, this post was the bump that just continued the convo like it hadn't been 15 months since the last post.

Came into the thread thinking that the closest game to perfect would probably be Prime :)

That is strange.

In three minutes I came up with this list war:

Chess
Tetris
Mario 1, 3, World, Galaxy, 64
Half Life 1 & 2
Doom, Quake, Duke 3D
Metal Gear Solid 1 & 3
Super Metroid, Metroid Prime, Metroid Zero Mission
GTA 2 & Vice City
REmake, RE1-3, RE4
Hitman Contracts
Silent Hill 1-3
R-Type, Contra, R-Type 3
Starcraft Brood War
Castelvania SOTN
FEZ
Bioshock
FF Tactics
Command and Conquer, Red Alert
Dark Souls 1, 2, Bloodbourne
Civ 3
Diablo I, II
STALKER
Fallout 1, 2, NV
Street Fighter 2, MK2, UMK3, Virtua Fighter 2, 4

And there's so, so many more. Perfection in a game is measured in fun-o-meters and these games rate off the chartzzz
