Have You Ever Tried Fugu?

tried it in Osaka but it feels average, but that might be due to that they use man raised ones instead of wild caught ones? the grill fugu fin soaked sake was nice thou, really adds to the taste.

Pick some stinging nettle and eat that if you want your lips to feel numb. Fuuuug No I don't want to try that fish. Ahhh Simpsons 😂

It's the only food in the world that is illegal to serve to Emperor Akihito of Japan or to even have it in his presence. Still worth trying just to say you've done it

Yes, about 6 years ago in Japan. We went to an expensive place where we had our own room. It's a course dinner so they bring out fugu served different ways. There was a salad served with fugu skin, deep fried fugu and a hot pot served with extremely fresh fugu. I'm talking so fresh the muscles were still twitching. Very fun dinning experience and I'd love to do it again.

At the same place I had shark fin sake. That was absolutely vile.

No, but I'd love to try it.

I was watching some documentary a while back, and they said it's a lot safer now than it used to be, as they use washing machines to wash out most of the poison.

I think the documentary is called "Fish: A Japanese Obsession."

Nah I rather not eat something that has a chance to kill me if not cut properly. But you could saw that about not cooking several meats properly. I do not know I would rather not take my chances that is all.

Yes, but not intentionally.

I got it as part of a tasting in Tokyo. I avoided it because they are too cute to eat.

Also most Fugu will not make you sick, and it is rare that it kills you at all.

Had it many times in Japan. The whole "you might die" thing is so overrated, it would never happen with fugu purchased at a supermarket or a restaurant.

It's pretty good, but not my favorite. I like fugu nabe (hot pot) with diced pieces of the fish that cook and then you dip them in ponzu. Really good that way.

Edit: And it's never made my lips numb or anything like that.

A couple people have told me it's too risky and they wouldn't even want to take the chance. I've tried telling them there really isn't any risk. More people choke to death eating mochi on New Years.

I've had it a few times at sushi restaurants in Japan. It's really nothing special and definitely not something I personally would order.

Live very close to a big fugu farm, had it sashimi, fried, boiled...not great. Barely any taste at all, barely numbs your lips. It's just another piece of Japanese culture being for culture's sake.

There are nontoxic fugu raised in farm now. Some chefs use them, so some people probably ate a few of them not knowing there are 0% risk.

Yep, I always make sure to eat it when in Japan. I absolutely love fried fugu.

I believe that nobody has actually ever died from eating it in a restaurant, other than when people have asked for the poison.

Here in Korea they have farmed poisonless fugu. I have had it a few times, but it is not the same experience.

Yep, i have had it.

Overrated. Firm texture and not much taste. You get a slight tingling sensation in the mouth.

I've had it once as part of a fugu set offered at Morimoto's restaurant in Manhattan. There was some fried pieces and a plate of fugu sashimi in the set. I actually thought it tasted pretty good, but didn't really experience the "tingle". I was a couple drinks down at the time, too, so maybe I was already tingling, haha. I'd probably get it again, since they only serve it for a month or two out of the year, there. Honestly, though, some good o-toro is gonna be much better for the money, but definitely have it once just to say you did.

My family took me to try it in Shimonoseki one of the times I visited them in Japan...they didn't tell me it was fugu until after I was already eating it, though. o_O

If you enjoy raw seafood/sushi/sashimi in various forms you will probably like fugu. I didn't get any numbness sensation when I tried it, but I only had a few pieces. Like any other piece of sashimi, I just ate it with a bit of soy sauce/wasabi and it was great.

No, I want to live.

On a side note, I picture the trash cans in the back of a Fugu restaurant just surrounded by piles of dead cats who got a taste of the parts the chef tossed out.

The only people who have been killed by eating fugu in the last few decades fall into one of two categories:
1. They caught it and made it themselves
2. They pressured the chef into doing something illegal

There is no longer a serious health risk associated with eating fugu at a restuarant.

I loled so hard at this...then felt really bad and cried.
