Heartbroken people dismissing "hit the gym" advice as a meme

When I was heartbroken and in the worst part of my depression nothing helped me more than starting out my day by going to the gym.

The gym is definitely the right place to be when you're heartbroken, but you should also not let yourself get our of shape when in a relationship. Focus on the gains all year round!

It's not a cure all for break ups but it's one thing that can help some people. It's also pretty generic advice which is why it's often given on Internet forums where we know very little about the situation.

It won't help everyone and it's only one small part of recovering.

Actually just saying "sorry to hear that" can be helpful. "Go lift brah" doesn't come off very sympatethic.

"Go lift brah," would be a shitty thing to say at any time.

I guess we have a difference of opinion about "sorry to hear that." That kind of stuff means absolutely nothing to me. Just like all of the "praying for xxx" or "xxx will be in our prayers" stuff I see whenever a tragedy hits. Zero meaning at all.

gyms are expensive.

Got a YMCA near you? They are reasonable, and as a charity will actually decrease the cost of a membership if you make less than a certain month.

Mine has quite a nice gym in it, a pool, basketball courts, and a variety of cheap fitness classes. Some have an indoor or outdoor track.

Precisely. I understand the good intentions but stuff like that is meaningless. I did not claim getting in shape will help everyone and I did not promise it will cure your mental pain (because nothing does from one day to another) but it sure helps unlike anything I know.

You don't even need the gym for a legit good workout.

You just need a yoga mat unless you just want to sweat on your carpet.

I joined a gym and it was a waste of money. I've never been a gym rat, had no idea how to run the equipment, no plan on what to do, and the people working there weren't much help as they were too busy hitting on the women or working out themselves. I spent most of my membership time just walking around the track.

Uh.... dude, that's on you. Watch some YouTube videos and do your own thing.

If I did not hit the gym, my depression would be MUCH WORSE. It's the little thing that helps me feel a bit proud and relieves the stress.

I may quit a lot of things when short on money: Game subscriptions, laser and electro, dying my hair, cinema, makeup, new clothes... but the gym is that little thing I consider vital for both my physical and mental health.

Are gyms just depressing in the US or something? I go to a small local gym that focus on physiotherapy for old people, the squat rack and free weights are free all the time I fucking love it.

The experience is something like a combination of the feelings of a visit to a used car lot and a visit to a public restroom. I'd rather go outdoors.
