That is just fricken annoying as hell. I knew the chances of getting a key were slim, but to find out there never was a chance in the first place...

lol :(

Surprise surprise, look what just started appearing.

People are going mad at PCGamer on Twitter over this.

and they rightful do so.

Someone should conceive a better method to actually do this sort of things...

Another hour of my life wasted - thanks PC Gamer!

exactly... I was even able to load the page all the time but the button to actually claim the key never appeared.

honestly the system for this kind of things should be much easier:

people get on a queue to get the key.

keys are assigned to the queue.
People receive the key based on first arrived first served.

you could even have this community based:
got a key you don't need? give it away in a queue.

the person who receives the key gives a feedback.
People with a lot of positive feedback get the advantage of skipping part of the queues whenever they get in a queue to receive a key.

Hello damage control...

Update 2: We know that readers had trouble accessing the 13/09/2013 giveaway. For many, the page failed to update and the “grab a key” button didn’t appear. While the site was suffering under exceptionally heavy load way in excess of the visits we received for the previous giveaway, some were able to access a Google cache of the site, log in and get a key. There is no evidence to suggest the keys were taken by bots. For the next giveaway we’ll ensure that the competition isn’t accessible via cache, and we’ll reinforce our servers to cope with the demand. Apologies to those who were disappointed, we’ll have another 350 keys for you next week.

They should have a list of every key, as such they should get blizzard to disable every single one of them. If it was bots or not, people exploited the system to get the keys while legit people refreshed the page and waited, as such they should all be revoked.

To do nothing really puts PCgamer in a bad light IMO and is pretty crappy..

I don't know about that.
I was one of the people refreshing the page every other second but I still don't think that would be fair.

disable every key not used yet, in this way you are just going to punish those who are selling the keys and didn't actually got them for themselves.

The only "fair" way to handle beta access is to sell an early access package. The truth is, no one will remember this part of the process. So either sit back and wait for open beta or get use to disappointment.

I'd totally buy an early access package with a few decks. Make it so, Blizzard!

It's kind of amazing how Blizzard are literally leaving money on the table by not offering this option.

Personally I've resigned myself to waiting for the open beta. There's plenty to play starting next week anyway.

I would probably do that as well. Hell Valve showed that it can work with DOTA2. Why isn't Blizzard doing this? At least then people who actually want to play get in and selling keys on Ebay wouldn't be a thing.

This is exactly what they should have done, or at the very least they could have the virtual blizzcon tickets give beta access to its, it would have been a great idea to put in a "get access to the Hearthstone beta with this ticket".

The tickets are I believe $29.99/£24.99.

But yes the best idea would have been a £20 pack that gives a load of packs and some gold and beta access (Blizzard would have made a load od cash from this).

Yeah that would be a good solution as well. Get to see all the Blizzcon stuff in HD and get access to the beta.

I am now playing some card Hunter just to get my fix....

Well after a few weeks in the beta I think I'm kind of over this. Every match plays pretty well identically at this point since there are only a few strategies that seem to work and few enough cards that it's pretty easy to build those decks. At this point it seems like it's just luck of the shuffle.

Fun few weeks though. Maybe I'll decide it's fun again later on.

Are you playing Arena mode or just regular constructed? It seems Arena is really where the game is best from everything i've seen.

I know the current meta game for priests is to power up a single card with tons of +health buffs and then inner fire to make Damage = HP... but it's a dumb way to play and is just asking for death against rogues, mages, warriors, pallies and shaman who can either 1 hit KO or destroy it's stats with polymorph or the like.
I ran into this kind of build today and it completely caught me off guard. But you are right in that it is totally counterable by Pallys if you know it might be coming. Second priest I played after that first time I was ready and completely wiped the floor with them after the buffed out two cards in a row. Still feel like a lot of it is the luck of the cards but knowing some of the meta game evolving has helped. Still seem to have no luck against rogues though. They always seem to have an execute card in the wings when I make my big plays.

just hit 9-1 with a third class, Rogue(first two were warlock, then shaman). I haven't played arena in a couple of weeks, but this deck was just nuts.

If Blizzard cared about doing its best to stop bots or to stop people from selling beta keys for insane amounts of money they would offer an early access buy-in in addition to the give-aways. Unfortunately, I don't see that happening. I do agree that the Blizzcon virtual tickets would have been a great way to actually "sell" a HS beta key.

I would have preferred they did it the old fashioned way and just activated your account automatically for the beta instead of sending out keys.

If they want to get stop people selling keys they should just give beta access to opt-ins and get rid of keys all together.

That would be the fair way to do it, but the HS beta is a marketing machine for Blizzard.

I just gotta thank Coringar. Had an extra key and PM'd a couple gaffers and luckily I replied in time to get it. Good dude for doing that.

I give up. I've been playing this game for over a week now and while I do Ok in the normal matches I just can not win any decent number of arena matches. I just went through 3 arena setups, one paid by gold two by cash, and at best I only won two matches before loosing 3.

I'm constantly out maneuvered by the other players deck to a degree that borders on more than just random chance. I don't want to say the game is cheating - because that is paranoid - but my god I'm not that bad at this game. It's just beyond frustrating to never win more than 2 matches in the arena when I can play any class in the other mode and do better. What the hell am I doing wrong?

They either have some late game card that negates everything or start off with some insanely lucky break of cards that I can't recover from. So. God. Damn. Frustrating.

Hard to say what you are doing wrong without more info about what you have been doing. :) What classes have you been playing in arena? How did your deck lock like?

As I mentioned in an earlier post, I started recording the deck building process during arena, so i could have a look at it again afterwards to see what I could/should have done differently, as well as get critique from friends to see other perspectives. If you want to have a look: http://www.youtube.com/user/MotteInParis/videos

Read some Blizzard forum stuff earlier today and it sounds like their opt in keys might be running out. Guess most of us will probably have to wait for the open beta.

Yup, I was about to post this - I didn't get the key - but I still really appreciate Coringar for doing that.

I hope you enjoy the game, Ferny! =)

how did he end up with a couple of extra keys? O.o

It's possible he just had one extra key, but I've heard the opt-in has given people more than one key before or he could have won one via contest, plus opt-in etc.

No. Nooooooooooooo!

Wait, you can start the tutorial off with different characters? I figured we all got Jaina.

I think everyone starts out as her, it doesn't take long to get past the tutorial crap though.

How can they run out of keys? They make the keys. And the final game will have to support upwards of a hundred times the amount of players as the opt-ins.

Ask some questions. Start well in the early game, lose it towards the end? Deck composition doesn't have synergy?

Yeah I just feel like my deck's don't have the best synergy. I try and have a gameplan and I don't /really/ want to follow the pack and build a miracle or spell power rogue because those don't seem that fun.

I've been struggling with Warrior for a while and it feels like even though I win a few games, I'm losing a lot more. I recently switched it up for a more spell-based/board clear style and have been having more success, but classes like mages or rogues absolutely demolish me. I've been trying to branch out to other classes like Shaman/Paladin and those are fun but I wish there are some neat Warrior guides/decks out there.

Got to force the executes out early so your big plays don't get killed. Look for crazy overpowered stuff with huge drawbacks like Venture Co. Mercenary. He forces people to basically waste a turn if you get him out on turn 5 or lower. Granted, if they don't kill it outright, you better hope you saved some cheap creatures or have some spells to play. You don't really want him sticking around for more than a turn or 2.

Rogues don't go spell power, they go for scrubs. It's Defias...something, but when you combo it another card is summoned. If you have Shadow Walk or any of the brewmasters, you can keep spamming it.

You keep the damage magic cards/minion effect for clearing the board or dealing damage to the opponent. Dagger up if you can clear with it, but the most important thing in this game is to keep board control.

Edit-It's shadow step, not walk.

Spell power rogue is a really popular archetype too. It, miracle rogue, and rogue aggro are all super common and strong; rogue midrange is good too but not as common.

Rogue is just really solid all-around right now - cheap to build and the best class overall.

Is it bad that this is making me want to play WoW again? I haven't got a chance to play HS yet, but it's increasing my temptation for WoW. I'm just going to resist it, for now. :/

Also, what does everyone think about the cards not being tradeable? I think it's a horrible, shortsighted mistake - just because I think a major fun factor in card games is the value that the cards hold and I think it's hard for cards to hold any value if you cannot trade them. I could be wrong with HS though. I know it's not supposed to replace a major card game and is more of a Blizzard side-project.

As much as I wish there was trading, I think Blizzard is in the right here. As a ftp game, if there was card trading, then botting would also be rampant. This goes a *long* way in ensuring that any botting exploits are too inefficient to be practical.

I don't really think the FTP model is the reason there is no trading - Hex, for instance, is free to play but you still have an extensive trading model. What they do to prevent new accounts from getting massive amounts of free cards is that they essentially will make the starter decks not tradeable so in order to get PVP cards you have to either buy them from CZE or trade them (which you cannot do with the starter deck you start out with). They also have put in extensive systems to track botting and other exploits, but like anything they'll have to be proven in their effectiveness. I do think Blizzard, of any developer, has the resources to prevent botting to the greatest extent.

I think Blizzard made trading unavailable because of the simplicity of the game. I don't think there's enough cards to really make trading viable, but that's just from an outside observer. I still wish there was trading, regardless! =P

Blizzard may have the ressources, but the whole point of this project is to avoid Blizzard's rather bloated dev cycles and keep a project as cheap and simple as possible for once.
They have no interest in having elements in the game that would need fixing and maintenance later on.
And they really really hate bots.

Yeah like iirate said, spell power rogue is a pretty big archetype going around - defias rogue too but I have decent amount of board clear to deal with that, but having to constantly clear 4hp+ minions with spell power is a lot tougher.
