It is a little bit like gambling. You are guaranteed 1 pack + 4 random rewards. So a pack costs 1.50 roughly, so you are betting 50 cents that your 4 random rewards will be greater than what you could receive than buying another pack. Apparently with a little luck and enough wins you can turn that 50 cents into effectively 9 times its buying power (or I suppose even greater if you get gold legendaries etc).

Oh, that's kinda cool then.

Is it known how the arena matching works?

Does a 4 win play against another 4 win, or can he play against a 2 win?

I dunno, I've been thinking though it would be cool if there was some type of playoff system. Say you reach 9-1, 8-2 or whatever then you would get an option to enter the playoffs for that day at a specific time or something like that.

Is there a difference between unranked and ranked matchmaking? All I am trying to do is beat the daily quests in the limited amount of free time that I have and I just played the most ridiculous, frustrating, unranked game. I got the guy down to 1, he had a secret that made him immune from dying, then he plays some 8/8 that sets his health at 15. I got him down again to 1, but he was able to pull off the win.

I just wanted to drop in and let every HearthStone player in this thread know about my experience playing HS on the Dell Venue Pro 8 tablet.

It runs perfectly. I was prepared for it to not run well since the current beta isn't designed for touch or tablets.

To put it simply: it runs flawlessly. NO complaints. Even with my stubby fingers, I have no problems placing units where I want or performing the actions I need to. I have yet to make a play by mistake that was due to input error from using an 8 inch Windows tablet.

Even the size of the text during a match is not a problem. Double tapping or holding your touch down on a card will increase it's size more than enough to read.

If you are looking for the perfect tablet to play HearthStone on in the 8 inch range, I cannot recommend the Dell Venue Pro 8 highly enough, although I assume HS will run just as well on any Windows 8 tablet.

The only issue I heard about was accidentally removing cards when customizing decks.

For anyone looking for some amusement, try building constructed decks that contain max 1 of each card down from 2. It's fun!

I think learning the game has more of an effect on getting those wins than getting the cards. Some of the cards can really help in winning but if you lose enough you end up facing people who make very basic mistakes. It might help to watch people play in twitch - they tend to explain why they are making the moves and why they prefer one card over another in draft. When I first started I was losing like 15x in a row but as I figured out how to customize my deck and gained a bit of intuition about how to play the quests became easy to finish (it obviously also helps to get better cards but don't overestimate it)

Sounds like a mage with iceblock and Alexstraza :p

I usually go ranked and have an okay time.

Was it you that beat me?

Okay i just made my first Shaman deck.

Should i change some stuff?

Take out ancestral healing for things that do things. It's very situational and awkward to draw in the wrong moments.

Well, that's my only real suggestion not knowing your other cards. If it works for you then by all means, but I think eventually you'll understand what I'm talking about.

From what I gather unranked is generally harder if you're transitioning from ranked matches, but I think if you lose a TON of games in unranked the matches will get a little better. Where ranked you'll never see easier matches by losing. This will change when the patch hits and rolls out the new match making system, where losing ranked matches will cause your rank to drop. Right now losing ranked matches does nothing.

In the arena, the match making pairs you up with others in the same win bracket if possible, so if you're 6-X, you'll fight other people 6-X, +/- 1, 2, 3, etc if no one is available at your current win score.

Went up against 3 straight mages in arena, all had 2-3 flamestrikes that won them the game. Kinda lame. First 0-3.

e: Got a couple nice cards in my consolation pack, which lessens the blow a bit.

I just dropped Malygos and I never play mage or priest or any spell heavy deck, or any deck worth replacing Ysera by Malygos

heh, pretty card I guess

Is there some kind of Frostbolt bug? I was up against a Mage that literally played six of them on different turns. Something was definitely amiss there. I didn't get a single point of damage in except with my weapons, but he also had an Ooze and froze me when I pulled Gorehowl. It was the most infuriating bullshit I have ever encountered.

Was it Arena? Was it especially the card "Frostbolt" or just the "freeze" effect?

It was constructed, and I'm positive that it was Frostbolt. I know enough about the class to know the difference between Frostbolt and Ice Lance.

Even on a bad day, Mages have way too much CC. That was over the top.

They also have Blizzard, Cone of Cold, Frostnova and Water Elemental that freeze.

If it was FROSTBOLT (3 damage, freeze the target for 2 mana) then I dunno how he accomplished to have 6 copies of the same card. Bug? Exploit?

And I agree. Mages need to be looked at. Freeze effect is too cost effective at the moment. Tho, I'm still thinking nerfing Blizzard by 1 damage and making fireball minion exclusive they would be pretty balanced.

I'm hoping they streamline Traps (like 2 costs) for all classes and intoduced neutral traps, and traps for other classes that don't have them right now.

He was removing my minions nonstop. No sooner did I play 2, 3 or however many minions than he removed them all.. or froze them so he could remove them the following turn. And he didn't even play any Flamestrikes. It was almost all Frostbolts. It was ridiculous and hugely frustrating. He played a Mana Wyrm on turn 1, which I removed, but after that I didn't see another minion until somewhere around turn 9. In the meantime he was just locking me down.

If I built any other deck than a Mage to have that much removal, it would never be able to finish off a hero.

You don't understand!!! The arena button speaks to me! Sometimes I have no gold and it asks for my credit card instead. "Only $1.99" it tells me, so I click on it and charge my credit card to play arena.. Then I lose and again it says "Only $1.99"

I got my first 2 legendaries today! Do you know how many fucking packs I've bought with gold and gotten poop....

Don't feel bad, I've thrown in 8 bucks for arena passes (I think). The first one was "well, I kinda want that stupid golden card". The other three were a moment of weakness.

I think I'm done buying things though. These happened basically right when I got into the beta. Unless the expansion is completely nuts, I'm fine going through arenas with the gold I get from dailies.

Ive determined I kinda suck at this game. I think my main problem is that I must be pretty bad at picking cards. I don't think my in-game game is all that bad

Yeah I've tossed in $6 so far. The money for arena is only tempting when you're flat broke on gold and are really yearning to play. Otherwise it's easy enough to just play every other or every third day, more often if you get a good run in. Though I'm considering stockpiling gold for a bit to be able to run 2 or 3 back to back even if I didn't get any gold returned.

Yeah, I like the cheap secrets. It's so great as a Paladin to be able to throw down a noble sacrifice while still adding to your board presence with the rest of your mana.

I kind of forgot that the majority of classes are missing secrets. I wonder if this was a conscious choice, or if they didn't get around to designing them yet. And It's odd that the "sneakiest" class (rogue) doesn't actually get any.

This is really why I like playing my hunter so much in constructed, one flare and the worries go away. You also get a free card :p

I just got hit by the most bullshit Holy Wraths I've ever seen. This guy played no cards above 5 cost all game (went about 12-13 rounds) but on turn 4 he Coin'd and used Holy Wrath; hit me for 9 damage. Weird, but whatever he got lucky.

Around turn 13 I had 12 life left, he had no minions and two cards in his hand. He Holy Wrathed again, hit me for 12 exactly and won. He still had around 11 cards in his deck. I don't know if he just had a ton of high cost cards and wasn't drawing them or just got lucky twice, but damn, never been hit for 21 damage by 2x Holy Wraths in a game before.

Mages are almost a guaranteed win if you can survive the first 3 turns without someone huge mana wyrn and if you have a healing card in your hand (even more so if you have a healing/armor hero power). You just need to never have more than one creature on the board at a time.

Edit: Constructed mages, arena mages are significantly harder with good drafts.

Also, unless there's going to be a patch Christmas week (I doubt it), only two more weeks left for them to patch the game before all the doom and gloom 2014 patch predictions start coming true! It'd be a shame if they make changes to this game at the same pace as SC2 or DIII (aka almost never).
