Wow... Arena is almost not worth playing anymore. They nerfed the rewards so much.

4 wins and all I got was 50 gold and a deck. I use to get that with 0-1 wins.

It's random, and always has been. Payouts on average seem to be much higher now, with people cashing out at 500+ gold and multiple packs for 12 wins.

0 wins is a special case, you generally get a better payout than 1-2 wins I believe (again somewhat random).

People were saying before you could get like 5 gold and all dust for under 5 wins (this was my experience as well, my poor arena runs were generally rewarded with 20 dust and 10-20 gold, definitely not 50 gold for a 1-X run), now at least 4-5 wins pays some gold. It's possible to get nothing from 1-2 wins other than the pack and a common card now though, you really need to have a good run to have a shot at better than before rewards.

Sure, it's easy to speak of cards strictly on theorycraft, not so much on play. I once faced a guy in the Arena that had 3 of these things, and of course that match did not end well for me :P

Yeah, not referring to arena play, everything is too random, I didn't think the original reference I replied to was referring to an arena match. If it was, I take it back, if not, it's not really theorycraft when there's like 20+ cards to deal with it, and casting one takes away your turn without giving you board control, so if your opponent had a turn 2 out, those 20+ cards are now not even needed depending on hero power. :p

Pre-patch I've had 5 wins and only won pack and a little dust. So, yeah, it's random.

I do find it amazing that people who play a card drawing game think a single datapoint is statistically significant.

That's a big part of it. Also if you're still playing hunter post-patch you may have more problems than before. However, that being said, I do think 3 star gold would land somewhere near the 18-20 range. The new ranking system is brutal, and the only way you can 'get ahead' is with a streak of wins so that you aren't constantly at a zero-sum of win/loss. I like it though, there's something to strive for, and you are having a constant battle with other players, rather than a stagnant rank being given to you with no real significance. My goal right now is to try and hit 10, but it'll be a long and arduous journey. Apparently once you hit rank 5+ you no longer have win streaks and it takes 5 wins to progress to the next rank. Absolutely soul crushing.
Yeah, the streak of wins is what got me to Rank 20, but I'm furious right now as I can't win even one match on Rank 20. Played almost 20 of them today, and won 1 (and that one was due to opponent lagging). Just tried playing unranked for the hell of it, and, lo and behold, I won every single one of them (played like 5-6 matches in a row).

I like the idea of new Ranking system in theory, but couldn't they make seasons that last couple of months instead of one? I'm gonna go crazy if I have to suffer this every month, unable to win couple of matches in Ranked due to resets and getting in the same pool as better players. Btw, can you fall from better ranks to the lower ones? I'm not sure if that's the thing just in these lower ranks - I mean, if you get to, let' say, rank 17, can you drop down to 18 again, or are you in 17 until next month's reset?

And yeah, yeah, I know, there's always unranked, but I quite liked playing ranked :(

I tried a Warrior in Arena lastnight. I shouldn't have.

No weapons and my mana curve sucked. Went 0-3.

All I got was a pack. That's it. Sigh.

Well there goes that theory, but all I've ever read about people going 0-X or retiring immediately because their draft was so bad they had no interest in playing was a pack and 25-30 gold. Guess you're not safe at any low number (nor were you before though).

Yes, you can go from a very high rank (5? 1?, there's some rank once you reach and you keep it for the rest of the month iirc) all the way down to 20 if you lose that many games. But I disagree with your assessment about having to suffer every month, it's only the first few days you'll suffer each month, since you can't go down in ranks until you hit 20, all the best players will clear out quickly leaving easier matches in ranks 25-20.

Yes, post rank 20 you can get deranked if you lose enough and go back down to 20.

so rank 20 is like the "loser" cap? that's harsh... I still prefer the old system :( now I don't feel like testing any new decks anymore, and I can't win on casual anymore

Why do you care about ranking? Play the game, you'll face people you deserve to be matched up against. It feels like the rankings actually mean something, so just play and get better while you're not capped with higher skill players with great decks.

Sometimes I think people (myself included) just want a button that lets us play against people who suck for these purposes. Or just play against people who are worse so we can win more than 1:10 games and feel good again, lol.

I guess your best bet is using your friend list to test out your decks, or if you're super-desparate, bringing them against the AI, but I don't see the purpose of being upset about testing decks which get slaughtered to the rank 20 players - isn't that the purpose of testing a deck? If you lose it was bad and you need to test another deck - why would expect a test deck that loses to the lowest ranked players (lvl 20) to actually be any good elsewhere? Perhaps that's the low-bar, and there aren't going to be worse players than what you find at rank 20.

I can understand once you climb in the rankings to around 15 or lower, you could feel like you only can use a certain deck in ranked play mode, because nothing else is competitive enough, and that casual mode is too hard as well. I will agree that I wish there was a true random casual mode that disregarded MMR or whatever, it's casual so why do you need to match up like as if it were ranked. Maybe have a third mode that is less depending on ranking, outside casual and ranked, because casual isn't really that casual.

Everyone keeps saying things like "oh Everyone and their mother probably has an invite by now" I've been opted-in since the first day and still nothing :(

RNG destroyed me in a game just now. I had 4 minions on the board to the opponents 2, life was about equal (21 to 22 for me), I had more cards in my hand. Opponent plays Ragnaros. Ends turn, the fireball hits my 7/7 on the board. I kill some of his minions on my turn and play an 8/8; I have about 3 minions on the board. He kills one. Ends turn, Ragnaros kills my 8/8. My turn, I play a 7/7 and a couple small minions. He kills another minion of mine and at the end of my turn Ragnaros kills my 7/7.

So, I had 5 targets, 3 targets, and 6 targets (including my hero for each turn) and Rag always hits my big guy. Couldn't do anything after that point really, but man, I had a Rockbiter and Windfury in my hand which at any point would have been lethal if I could have gotten just one turn with one of my big creatures up and able to attack.

It's just the way card games go, but man, it still stings a bit when the odds are in your favor but you miss out 3 times in a row.

as I stated yesterday, i'm not competitive at all but there's that OCD part of my brain that refuses to ignore any "in my face" type of ranking system. That's why I prefered the old ranking system, I had no idea where I was in the rankings

When I was doing my Warlock run, every time I threw down Goblin Bomber, no matter how many targets were on the field, it would insist on nuking my Blood Imp.

All you can do at that point is to spam "Well played!"

Ah, I'm just the opposite, and would prefer to know every little detail if possible, to see the exact placement I am on the ladder, even if it's rank 1,300,000 or whatever. They only display specific placement for the top players, so we still are shielded from that info, but hopefully they start letting us see our win/loss record and stuff like that soon.

Some of my friends mentioned this game is actually pretty fun, but it wasn't really on my radar.

Where's the best place to learn about it considering I probably won't get a beta key until forever from now?

PLEASE BLIZZARD DON'T LISTEN TO THIS MAN :P

I don't want to know my loss record EVER

Or, you know, you could not play a terrible card.

I haven't had much time to play since the new ranking system was introduced. For those that may be interested -- 7 wins in a row got me to 2Star Rank 20. I feel naughty but I've been using a high-end Mage deck (not the popular freeze one) to rank. After reading this thread -- you all scared the shit out of me with all these Mages. I expected to run into ONLY Mage decks. Not quite, it seems.

I play with a notebook in front of me. I keep a record of what deck I play and my win/loss record with that deck. I only do this for ranked play. In unranked I tested my decks out. I think some of you need to realize that it isn't just about the cards in the deck -- but rather -- how to play the deck and how to play the deck against a specific class. That takes time to understand. I played well over 100 games unranked with multiple decks until I was comfortable with "taking them out" into ranked play.

Speaking of -- is anyone still using "Doctor Draw?"

STOP CONCEDING I NEED TO FINISH MY 40 SPELLS DAILY

;~~~~~~~~~~~~~;

I'm playing rogue ;~~~~;

The only spell I get off is Backstab before they concede!

Man, I wish I played people who auto-conceded!

I need to re-evaluate my decks though. From what I hear a lot of people are doing the swarming stuff, and I like doing stuff outside of the box. Maybe I'll do a lot of big cards + heals, hah.

Has anyone been successful with a Spell Power warrior? I tried it one and it was terrible.

Yep, and that's probably where I'll be for quite awhile. I can barely win any games at all in the past few days of constructed, everyone seems to have incredible epics and legendaries and much better cards than I in general. I mean I've not even won my up TO rank 20 yet, LOL.

Yeah, matchmaking has the whole "ladder anxiety" feeling now of Starcraft II or League of Legends before they made it so you couldn't rank down.

I liked being able to mess around with new decks at masters level, because I knew I wouldn't get ranked down if I lost because it was a worst deck then I had first presumed.

Now I only want to play my good decks and just want to try and win, and losing streaks really suck. The highest I got last night was level 16, and then I lost a few matches and was thrown back down to 17 so I just quit ranked for the night.

I know its not alot by anyone else standard but currently 3-2 in arena, never been so proud :|

Hmm just drafted a Druid arena deck and managed to get Harrison Jones and Illidan Stormrage. The rest of the deck kinda sucks as I made horrible choices in all honesty. Think I'll play it later after a few beers tonight ;)

What are the prizes for ranking up, though? You can't improve or properly test a deck if you're doing it against substandard opposition.

That feeling when you win against a Mage who had 4 Fireballs and 3 Flamestrikes and 2 Cone of Colds.
Maybe he should have drafted some Minions .. all he played was card draw minions and then died with a full Hand. Arena is not constructed ;)

Can't you just test new decks by playing under casual if you're so worried about your rank?  Kinda figured that's what it was for.
You're still matched up against the same skill level. It's annoying when you just want to finish dailies.

3-6/x win rewards definitely seem better now.

Yeah, just use casual if you want to mess around with other decks now, or wait for the ladder to reset each month. Casual should provide the same (or harder) difficulty challenge as your current ranked placement. I imagine you'll mainly encounter other people with similar rankings doing the same thing (only probably with better decks lol).

My worst Hearthstone week I think. Luck isn't on my side right now.

I've seen some insane draws from other players before, but these last two days was rage inducing non-stop. Crazy, crazy luck for them.

Karma will be on my side next week to balance this (yeah right). :O

I thought it was just me!

The last 2 days I can barely win 1 match anywhere. I am just getting curbstomped by turn 4 when I normally dont.

Ended 4-3 got 85 gold and a pack, not bad considering this one was a free arena too

Ah, I didn't know that casual play matched to your ranked level of play.

It's still not quite the exact same, because I assume others will be trying test decks under casual as well, so it's not going to necessarily the same level of play as you will expect playing on Ranked.

The animations for gold cards are obscene, my god blizzard is good, just got gold spirit wolves, tempted to gif them
