Hey all,
Just thinking about the future of Hearthstone and how Blizzard will potentially expand on their core game.
I saw a comment the other day along the lines of "See? This game has so much more depth than people give it credit for! Everything's fine!" That'll be great if that's actually the case, but just how much depth is there?
Looking at the product itself we have what,
1) Ranked PvP play. 1-1 match with another player.
2) Arena. Ranked, limited environment play.
3) Tournaments. (data-mined text seems to indicate there will be tourney support)
4) Dailies.
At this point, Arena seems to offer the most potential for varied, long-lasting play. There was an interesting post about this earlier in the thread about the problems with Arena - specifically that players will always go for the best cards rather than attempt to explore possible synergies with their class.
Overall, I don't have too much of a problem with Arena other than the fact that as time passes, certain cards are going to stand out as being clearly better than others. Once this knowledge reaches a certain percentage of players, success in Arena will be largely determined by RNG - all things equal, the player who gets the better cards will win. Draw luck and player skill will add the variables, but deck construction is still probably the biggest contributing factor to success in arena.
2) Tournaments. Right now we're still in the early stages of the game where everything seems fresh, but I'm going to say that the 400-something card pool will not last. Dominant strategies will surface, much like we say in the beta pre-wipe. Then you're going to have decks broken into one of these dominant decks or a deck tailored to beat it. Everything else will be tossed aside. To keep things fresh, HS will need expansions and lots of them. I'm not convinced that the light, beginner-friendly, bite-sized game they've come up with can support more complicated rules / unit abilities. If that is true, then we're looking a finite number of variations for new units and an inevitable power creep. It will be interesting to see what kind of plans Blizzard has for the game on this front. I kinda feel like tournament play clashes with their design goals. We'll see. I mean, take a look at another emerging product - Hex. If I wanted to run a tournament for it, there are a lot of choices even now during the alpha - highlander, tribal, 5-color, and pauper come to mind. Hearthstone could potential do Pauper and maybe some sort of Hero-restriction based tournament but it's a lot harder to swing. Hmmm...
Still, it's not like Blizzard to put the time / money into putting out a product, only to not support it afterwards - especially if they're going the F2P route. Is this just an experiment to test the viability of the F2P market? Is this going to be a gateway product into some other, casual game? Or are they in it for the long haul? Are we going to see something like Magic with new expansions, sets, multiplayer variants and what not?
Don't get me wrong, I'm dying to play the game. Waiting for both a HS beta key and Hex alpha access is pretty rough. P4 Golden is the only thing keeping me sane.
Anyway, I'm sure there are a lot of things I'm probably not seeing. How confident do you feel about HS's longevity? Do you even care? Will it be enough to just jump in, play around for a few weeks / months and then move on?
edit:
DOOOOOODs, Blizzard just sent me a key! *.*
I thought they hated me because I didn't opt into their Cataclysm beta! See you in the game!
To you guys who haven't gotten in yet, I know it sounds hard but just try to all hakuna matata about it. If you're obsessing about it, it'll only make the wait go longer! Just keep believing and you'll get in!
We should get a google spreadsheet up with gaffers up!
