thanks for that clarification. It is possible my Ridge Racer flag comment was stretching the point a little :)

I *do* look forward to some of the things physics can do, but I just don't see it as the holy grail as some hold it up to be. I suppose I prefer things to be broken down.

eg animation with proper IK etc. I guess thats down to physics, but its also maths. Where does maths become physics?

Its just an example of a word being inflated to encompass everything anyone wants it to do. If we don't keep basic definitions clear it doesn't help when morans (sic) start using ambiguous terms against us.

Yeah, words certainly do get abused here – and everywhere – and you are right, at its core physics really is just math.

Regardless, I think it isn’t too hard to separate the two. As you stated, IK is certainly an example of ‘physics’ since it is attempting to simulate 'real' physical interaction of objects.

Let’s make it a bit easier … here’s an example …

Let’s say you have a 1st person shooter where the player has a rocket launcher. What happens when you shoot at an enemy? If it is not using what we would call physics, the determination of a ‘hit’ is pretty simple. A calculation is made simply by using your location, the enemy’s location, and the angle you are shooting. Basically it will determine whether a ‘line’ drawn from you (based on where the launcher is facing) will intersect with the enemy.

Now take the same situation, but apply some limited Newtonian physics. In this case, a calculation is made that not only includes everything mentioned before … but it will also factor in the arc of your rocket. This arc is calculated by incorporating a velocity and the weight of the projectile as characteristics. This information is then fed into an algorithm attempting to simulate the effects of gravity on your projectile.

Uh oh you just gave kittonwy a heart attack methinks. :(

Closer to may 2007 release, the better.

I don't think that really matters, both interviews took place during E3, so its not like they're goign to change release dates mid E3 with the game. They've always said they wanted time to fine tune it and it appears they're getting the chance to do it instead of being told "Get it out before Christmas". On Sony's official site they have it listed as March 2007, which is the first time its ever been giving a specific date

http://www.us.playstation.com/E3/Games/GMID-020

I'm disappointed.

If its a very constant 30fps then that is fine. If it drops below 30 like a lot of games claiming to run at 30fps do then it wont be fine.

So you'd rather have them rush it?

I want them to make the Christmas holiday season, it doesn't have to be a launch day title, but it's good business to cash in on december sales.

Imo everything is "rushed", there's always something a developer would want to implement or polish but can't because of either budget or time-constraint, a developer would always want more time, it's like God of War having several levels cut out of it, but the game was in development for three years, SCEA Santa Monica can't spend their time developing it forever, I feel the same way about Heavenly Sword, it will never be "perfect" (no game is ever "perfect"), if it's ready and polished enough, I don't see why they need to hold it back, it's been in development for 3+ years, I'm not going to wait for ten years because a developer doesn't think it's "polished enough".

It's been in development that long technically, but on the PS3 with Sony's funding and publishing its been in development for a shortly over a year.

And it's shit business to release a game if the devs don't feel it's done. It will come out when it comes out.

Regardless, I find it hard to believe they'll have a problem with sales - even if it doesn't come out until '07

Like God of War, some games spend quite a long time in pre-production though (God of War's three year of development included pre-production).

The question is how do you gauge when the game is "done"? A game can have most if not all of its mechanics polished and highly playable at a rock-solid framerate and the majority of the content planned making it in and still a developer might ask for more time.

And it's not JUST what's best for Heavenly Sword, it's what's best for BOTH Heavenly Sword AND the PS3 launch line-up, and how Heavenly Sword fits into the grand scheme of things while benefitting the most from the strategic positioning of the title. A march release might not be the most optimal time to release the game if the game can be highly polished and make the Christmas season. The developer might want a bit more time, but there are gamers wanting to play this ASAP.

I'm glad you're entertained.

Hopefully in July they'll show more of this game, and more importantly, Lair gameplay and Warhawk ground missions.

There will be a presentation on Lair at Siggraph '06 if nothing else. Although like GDC we may not get much, if anything.

I'm guessing that is not the case, as Sony would make them wrap it up.

Heavenly Sword needs a day of its own to shine. Launch day for the PS3 is too crowded.

I wouldn't say that. I just don't think Warhawk or Resistance will fulfill a killer launch app. Lair might, but I don't think that will make launch.

If some extra months will make Heavenly Sword that much more awesome though then fine. I got too many other games between PS2 and DS to get anyways.

I personally think Ninja Theory should get as much time as they need to make this game as good as possible (as far as the technical aspects, framerate and such).

Yes, but they won't. Fortunately and unfortunately, HS is now tied up with PS3 launch (window, whatever)

Unfortunately because there will be insane pressure to get it out quickly.

Fortunately because otherwise I doubt they'd have had the cash and support from Sony that they are getting now.

Ninja Theory just need to suck it up, accept all the money hats and make their next game all it should be. This first one has strings attached.

in away, this is true, however, if this game sold well.. i expect bright future for Ninja Theory developers. that if Sony didnt buy them out like usual

Given what they've been saying, their next game will likely be HS2. :p

But really, if you're picked up by a 1st party (or 3rd party) to make a game for them, when isn't there strings attached? They're funding it so they're going to control what happens with the game to an extent.

If Sony buys them out, it would work out in their favor, given they can focus on their tech and they've already had more experience on the PS3 platform, and they'll likely be better funded. On the other hand, they're situated right next-door and most of the NT founders are from SCEE Cambridge, Dean Ashton actualy LEFT Ninja Theory to join SCEE Technology group. It should work well with them being second party to Sony, it's mutually beneficial to both parties.

DMC4 will destroy those 2 wannabe-action games!!!!!!!!!

DMC4 is going to be strong like a bull... made out of steel. If DMC4 comes out in March 2007, Heavenly Sword will have a lot of competition if they delay the game until March.

The developer of Heavenly Sword hates that smilie.

While I will buy Heavenly Sword when it's released, I can't go along with the personal preference of the developer of Heavenly Sword because I wuv this smiley very very much.

Kittonwy, I love your use of similies, they somehow always fit your posts - but as a friendly warning I have to tell you that one guy who was posting here was banned just because he would put a :( smilie at the end of every post he made. Tons of people cheered when he was banned too. I'd PM mods about clearing up your smilie use if I were you.

But without the smileys they will just be emotionless posts, like this one.
