Heavy Rain play target is “8-12 hours,” says Cage

It sounds like you've never played a Treasure game. And Treasure's games are extraordinary.

Dragon Drive, Stretch Panic, and Light Crusader are extraordinary, yeah.

I've played plenty of Treasure games, and I've played them plenty long enough. Gradius V, at 80 minutes long, is too goddamn long for a shooter; it's the game's biggest flaw. Especially when you consider the fact that it loops.

Monkey island 1 can be beated in 30 minutes

I'd like to see that. I'd be very surprised, considering it takes at least 15 minutes just to learn most of the insults.

The exact length I expected.

I'm really excited for this game though.

I really like David Cage, his Indigo Prophecy intro makes him incredibly endearing and he gives me that humble auteur vibe that's pretty rare among game makers.

8 to 12 hours? Isn't that basically the average length of games? Outside of an RPG the majority of single player games only last that long.

I don't mind shorter games (barely have time to play anything these days) but it's tough out there for short games. Unless they have a strong enough license to back up the game, games need to bring something extraordinary to the table or have mountains of online and offline content to get sales.

I'll rent it. With all of the free time I have, eight to twelve hours is nothing. Two days at most. And I don't trust his narratives enough to believe I'll be that($60 worth) interested in alternate endings and such. This hobby is getting to expensive for that. Five hundred bucks for a console last ear, $400 for the same console this year. I'm spent.

I remember Cage said before that it would be the same length as Indigo Prophecy, so I'm not surprised. It's not necessarily a bad thing, I didn't really IP to be too short.

If anything IP is too long, if Cage were to make Heavy Rain a 20-30 hour game, it will be hard not to make the story fall apart (plus they will be a lot more fillers like Tyler in IP).

on a sidenote, 8-12 hours mean basically 6
Sure, there are cases in which the average lenght is drastically wrong, see Metroid Fusion. Six hours at regular pace? i was surprised to clock more than 15 hours on my first playthrough. Game's just way bigger than that

And Bioshock and Gears of war!

Monkey island 1 can be beated in 30 minutes
Day of the tentacle in 30 minutes
Zack mcKracken in 10 minutes
Maniac Mansion in 6 minutes (not kidding)
Sam&Max 40 minutes

And those are the best adventure games ever so, no. Nothing to do with the length of the game :)

this doesn't mean a thing. It is pretty obvious most of the games can be completed in a very short time, but who the hell cares? If you are a masochist you can get some fun out of it, but I actually happen to like playing them instead of beating some retarded internet record
Oh yeah, I spent 50 dollars for a game I could complete in 30 minutes. Fuck I'm so interested in doing so.

This. For the type of game that Cage is making, it's critical that the story stays consistent and is well paced. Otherwise you would have a 20-30 hour game that is just boring.

artificially lengthening a single player campaign is the worst possible blow against a game.

Wind Waker motherfuckers! >:I

“We’re still in the middle of production, so I can’t really tell you the exact time of the game, but we’re targeting a game between eight and 12 hoursin gameplay for one walk through,” he said.

that means less than 7 hours
