All about speed (cardio perk, for sure) and planning. you really need to use it in conjunction with the UAV, and you probably want at least 2 fully upgraded beacon slots on the team (10 beacons total). You should be dropping the first one away from objectives in isolated areas, popping a UAV to find a safe route and then looping around the enemy horde. It can take some practice but you'll eventually be able to go entire missions without seeing a single enemy (save for extraction sometimes).
Plan ahead. Drop zone should be away from everything else with a back route for the team to escape from, away from the beacon and towards the first objective. As long as you don't trap yourself in a corner and keep moving, you should be good.
Edit: I find some players don't like this strategy because it involves running in the opposite of objectives sometimes or ignoring an objective until you can lure the patrols away. This can be time consuming. Once in a while you might need to "reset" too, and people can get impatient.
I play like that pretty much, and will go a roundabout way to avoid patrols if I need to, but I stick with strategim priority. That always gives me enough cool down to throw a decoy either at every other objective or slightly between them. I'll let someone else throw the UAV, so I can keep ammo, recoilless and something to hold us down at the extract with. Recoilless is swappable for personal shield, rep-80, jump etc depending on race, planet and objectives.
...but you have to make serious time for that to work, before the 5 decoys are gone, if no one else brought any. I swear it's heaven playing with another decoy player who knows you're still in cool down.
I might try cardio solo sometime to get a feel for it. You're definitely right that "no, we gotta go this way" doesn't jibe with most players. I hate getting in screen pulling "negative" tug o' wars. Then you just have to go their way, knowing we have a slim chance of finishing from that point on.
EDIT: ran cardio, two decoys, and a combination of mech + nuke or 2 of each, with a new player on Suicide Mission planets and it worked out pretty well since capture points almost always fucked us over. The emergency run away speed really helped.
