They had a bunch of chances to reel the marketing back in. Hell, Sean himself made shortly for release a blog post about what people should expect from the game, part of that was his appearance on Colbert where he talked about meeting other players. So even in that "cards on the table" moment he was promising something that wasn't thereI can't believe people are so devoid of empathy as to not feel sorry for Murray or the team at all. They clearly wanted to make the best game possible -- it just turned out it wasn't possible. By that time the marketing had gotten away from them and I'm sure they thought the game would still be good enough to warrant the enthusiasm it incited, flaws and all.
For most people that wasn't true.
And everyone has raked them over the coals for it like a mob of selfish, angry children.
I didn't like No Man's Sky. I was also highly dissatisfied. It was not worth the price of admission. And it was marketed on promises it could not keep. But that is no. reason. to. ruin. a. life.
It was just another mediocre game. It didn't hurt you. Get over it.
Thanks. The Polygon, Forbes, and Mashable reports are all based on statements from Sean's personal email, which appears to have been hacked in addition to the HelloGames twitter account.
We also got a long two-paragraph "statement" from a Hello Games email address that was very clearly fake.
We've been trying to get him on the phone to sort this out. Most likely their email server was compromised, hence all the misinformation.
What a strange reaction.
Thank you for the update Jason. Put this in the OP as well and update. The Polygon, Forbes, and Mashable reports are all based on statements from Sean's personal email, which appears to have been hacked in addition to the HelloGames twitter account.

I enjoyed the game. Absolute insanity how much hate these guys have received.
Dissapointment? Sure. But pure hate?
Wish the internet wasn't always so savage, considering it's all human beings behind the shroud.
No no.. It's:
WE NEED AND EXPLANATION EVEN AFTER WE RECEIVED OUR REFUND AND CAN GIVE TWO SHITS ABOUT THE GAME BUT I STILL WANT TO BE DISGRUNTLED!
Like... Move the on. deal. You got what you wanted and clearly the communication line is dead so leave the past in the past, know not to buy from the company again and leave it be. What the heck could they say now that would make anyone feel better? Nothing at this point! but you would think people who clearly aren't in the interest of hearing anything now would want that and they KNOW that they won't accept any answer besides whatever coined unrealistic phrase they have reserved that if not said exact, they won't accept.. So why even try it? It's so silly and immature now.
True, but I doubt other mediums here stuff like "the Google Pixel phone sucked, so screw every team member who worked on it, hope the worst happens to them blah blah blah".
Hmmm, I wonder who it was:
Oh, so exactly what I said? I see you haven't responded to my second point (since you cut it out) so I assume that means you believe this warrants ruing lives?
You've done nothing to invalidate my post. I say again, "Get over it."
Enough empathy to be pissed, want answers (which I agree is valid!), but not enough to attempt to ruin someone's life.
Hmmm, I wonder who it was:
There's absolutely no way to condone the abuse some are dishing out, but do some of you actually believe it's OK that Hello Games lied to their consumers regarding the product they sold? I don't understand how it's OK to give them a pass because some people are being abusive assholes.
I personally think you guys are just as pathetic as those throwing out the abuse.
The soundtrack alone was worth $60.
Sean: "Hope you enjoy"Whatever is happening they deserve it.
Yes it's just a videogame, yea it was just 60 bucks but they did this to a MILLION + people.
The way criminal charges work varies on severity, scam 60? Slap on wrist. Scam millions of dollars, life sentence.
Fuck hello games and that lying prick Sean.
You can tell he knows his gig is up even with this letter to reviewers.

I'm too confused now

Hi you must be new here
THERE
IS
NEVER
A
GOOD
REASON
TO
GIVE
ABUSE
TO
ANYONE
Worst case scenario: he scammed a person out of $100. This divorces Sean from all human empathy? Really? Petty, thy name is "gamer".People don't usually feel empathy for scam artists.
This meme is cute and all, but I would save it for when people are actually pitchforking and calling for abuse. The last 2 people ya'll quoted haven't discussed abusing him.
How do you figure? There's two sources pointing to it being Sean. He himself in an email as well as en email to the Wall Street journal saying it's a disgruntled employee which is something he also could classify as. There's only 15 people to choose from isn't there? As far as a hack goes..... that would mean someone hacked the Hello Games LinkedIn page and wrote one tweet and then quickly deleted that tweet and locked the count. Then this hacker proceeded to email gaming websites? There's quite a few assumptions with the hacker answer and not so many with the it's Sean Murray answer. I hope he gets the help he needs. I also hope he takes the time to at least apologize to his customers for failing to deliver on what they promised. It would go a long way towards stopping the vitriol.
You have to realize that NOT EVERYONE FELT LIED TO.
I rented and played the game for about 15 hours. It was kind of fun. Exactly what I expected. So this backlash against Hello Games seems crazy to me. Sure they exaggerated and lied, but I feel that way about every release. What came out recently... Titanfall? Well, I remember a promise of sort of campaign that was supposed to have multiplayer integrated. That's not really what we got. I can come up with 50 examples just from past 3 years.

Simmer down.
Jason Schreier said the e-mails were clearly fake.
Not everything is All The President's Men.
At this point, who knows what's true. I'm just watching it all unfold with my popcorn. So, they were hacked. Or not?
"You play with fire, you get burned" is a standard justification for abusing people. It can be paraphrased as "You deserve what you got for what you did".
English is fun.
Come the fuck on.
Are you a sociopath? Are you ok?
Sean brought it to himself by choosing to hide away. When unsatisfied customers are treated with radio silence instead of calming down and moving on chances are the grudge continues to grow and eventually gets out of control, and even the initially sympathetic customers may join the angry crowd when their impression changed from 'I wasted $60 on this' to 'Sean took my money and ran away'I can't believe people are so devoid of empathy as to not feel sorry for Murray or the team at all. They clearly wanted to make the best game possible -- it just turned out it wasn't possible. I bought the game, I think it's trash, but I didn't fall for the marketing and I couldn't care less about the money I spent.
There's no acountability in this industry and it's time that something changes. So yes, they deserve all criticism, especially with how they've been handling post release.
But yes, I get it, outrage culture is in right now. I'll leave poor Hello Games alone. Sorry guys![]()

This thread really is unbelievable.
Have you been reading the same thread? Care to nip back and read the posts.
"Deserve everything they get": Im sure that doesn't condone abuse at all.
"Play with fire, get burned": Nothing to do with abuse , eh?
