Help getting Nat 2. My router gives me NAT 3 on my PS4.

hello...

I have recently upgraded my internet to a better line. To do this I had to get a new router.
Thing is the internet provider only sells these :

JEcWTkZ.png

Technicolor TG789vn v3

So I bought one of those, and it all works fine. Great speeds and reliable Wifi. Only problem I have is that I can't get my PS4 to get NAT 3.

So I have tried Portforwarding.. BUT port 443 and 80 can't be used with this brand of Router, and those are needed to make it happen. And you can't DMZ anything with this Router...

Anybody know a way to make it work..? or is the only solution to buy a new better Router..?

If you can't do those things you've listed, you can't unfortunately.

NAT 2 isn't necessarily bad, it just means it knows you've got a router in the way and UPnP is enabled. You're most likely not going to be effected. The only time it'll get bad for you is when you've got multiple PS4's on the same network all playing P2P games concurrently.

I have NAT 3... which makes some MP games unplayable.. NAT 2 is fine.. But I can't get NAT 2.

thanks .. I have... but that didn't help me..
I'm presuming it's enabled?

If you've got a router which doesn't allow port-forwarding, putting a device in DMZ or a shoddy UPnP implementation; I'd buy a new router IMO.

Take that thing back to the store.

Is that box plugged into the wall or is there another box or modem "behind" it? Usually this is a problem if you have your own router sitting in front of another thing that can act as a router.

Some routers/modems have a "passthru" or "bypass" mode that basically passes connections coming through the device without trying to firewall them etc. if you can turn this feature on on one of the devices, it might drop you down to NAT 2.

I'm in the same boat OP. Upgraded to faster internet, only to get stuck with a shitty piece of hardware on which UPNP doesn't work correctly, the same goes for port activation/forwarding.

I configured my PS4 as a DMZ host. It's not recommendable to do this on let's say a PC which has services potential attackers target. But for a console it shouldn't be that big of a deal.

I went from NAT 3 to NAT 1. Mind you, this was my only option. If you are allowed to forward the right ports. I'd recommend doing that instead.

If he did that, it means he can't plug anything else into his router as it's just straight through. His PS4 would have an external IP.

The Router is plugged into a Box on the wall that was installed by the Internet Provider. I have had other routers before, and never had any problems.. but this model gives me problems..

I will check to see if there is a Bypass/Passthrough mode on it.. thanks.

Use this router solely as a gateway if possible and buy yourself a capable router.

How did you configure your PS4 as a DMZ host?

If you can, use Homeplugs. I did and it made things much better. That may fix your problems.

And you'd be wired.. Plus, cheaper than a router.

Does the box installed by the ISP have four ethernet ports or wifi? If it does then you probably need to have it put into bridge mode to disable the router functions. A lot of people plug their router into the router/modem provided by a ISP and that causes double NAT.

Ignore me, I misunderstood. For my NAT issues in the past wired has always been the solution. I'm off on this though.

All good. I thought maybe there was some solution here I was unaware of. I use homeplug at home as well. I'm a huge supporter of wired connections when possible.

Yeah, if you can use them they're much better. It has sorted my ping spikes which used to be an issue. I've not had any connection issues at all since getting them.

Sorry I've not been of help op, but consider them anyway for online play.

How did you configure your PS4 as a DMZ host?

I made sure to configure my PS4 with dynamic (DHCP) address, and noted this down.
After that I logged into my router and looked up the PS4 in my client list via IP address, and I assigned a public IP address to this address.

After that I restarted my PS4, and refreshed the web interface of the router.
You will see that the router has assigned a public IP to the PS4 in the client list.

Configure your network settings on the PS4 manually with this address.
Subnetmask should be 255.255.0.0
Gateway is the same as your public address. The last octet should be a 1 though.
Primary and secondary DNS I just used the Google ones.
8.8.8.8
8.8.4.4

Your PS4 should be on NAT 1 after this.

I've never been a fan of DMZ myself. The standard rule with any firewall is you block everything, and open up only what you need. DMZ takes an opposite approach to this.

The wall "BOX" is just a box full of wires.. no ports or anything. The Internet line is coming from that box and directly into the Technicolor router..

I had a NAT 3 problem that wouldn't go away, no matter how much I tweaked the router settings. Turns out my modem had a "security" setting that was on by default that was ruining everything. I wouldn't have guessed.

The dreaded double NAT. It's the reason I'm stuck using Verizon's router in my house.

I don't know what it is with Rainbow Six Siege, but that's the only game that's ever given me NAT problems. It says my NAT is strict and won't let me party up with my friend, it's super obnoxious. Literally no other game does this.

Could you please tell me how..? I have looked in the manual and around the net.. no DMZ options as far as I can see.?

What I did is I went and entered directly to the router settings online like I put 192.168.1.254 or something like that will bring up the router page, on there you go to Tools and then Firewall, it should have options on blue on the bottom clickable saying "Assign DMZ to a local device" or something.

That video show how but is in spanish, the model is not quite the same but neither mine was and I did it that way.

The PS4 is quite weird when it comes to network.

Sometimes it works great, others it doesn't even let me party chat with the same people I always party chat because of NAT problems (but we can still chat in-game).

NAT always alternates between 1, 2 and "can't test it". Outside the connection tests always showing a low speed, and downloads been slow while the unit is in use, but at normal speed during rest mode.

So, will be watching this thread to follow any possible solutions to try on mine (is on DMZ already).

Yeah i have issues with my Superhub 2 (supplied from Virgin media) which is in 'modem mode' and my Linksys EA6900 wireless router, i have everything setup correctly (UPnP enabled, port triggering etc) but i still sometimes get NAT Type 2 (on the PS4) & Moderate Nat on the (xbox one). I think it must be a double NAT issue but i have the my device from Virgin Media set to 'Modem mode' so it should be ok but it isnt!

I would buy another router OP. My ISP used to give out Technicolor routers and they're absolutely dreadful. They use Zyxel now which are equally as crap. Always buy your own better router rather than using ISP supplied ones, they're pretty cheap for a good quality one.

Check on a pc whether you also get an ipv6 address - it could be that you are behind a v4 gateway so you will never be able to do v4 natively.
Check your v4 ip address by going to a “what is my ip“ site and go to a nslookup $ip“ on your computer and tell us what the output of that is. It should return a name.

thanks for the responses and advice here.. will give it a go when I get home later.

found this Dutch forum ... and looks like the solution for MY problem is right there. Hope it works.

This is exactly what I did as well (I speak Dutch). It's basically the same thing what I described a few posts back. Doing this will get your PS4 on NAT type 1.

The same disclaimer with regards to a potential security breach is still in order though.

ahh thanks. Will get a new Router soon anyway.. just need a solution for now, a game I am reviewing made it impossible to play online. It even told me it was because I have NAT 3. Hard to review a game when you can't go online. ;o)

One thing to keep in mind is that ports 80 and 443 shouldn't need to be set because they're the default HTTP and HTTPS ports. If those needed to be opened there would be some wicked crazy issues going on.

NAT2 and Moderate on their respective networks are perfectly normal when you're using a router. The only time you should be getting NAT 1 or Open on the systems is if you were connecting directly to the modem or had a device in DMZ at the time (bypassing all other routing, which is akin to being connected directly to the router).

You need to forward these ports: 80,443,1935,3478-3480 if you want it to work (as far as I know)

and this router does no allow to open .. 80 and 443. The homepage of my internet provider even tells me this..

so if they somehow use those ports for something else, then I will get the problem I have.

or am I mistaken?

Right, but 80 and 443 are always open, otherwise you'd never be able to use the internet. The other ports are the ones that usually need to be set, they simply list the HTTP/S ports on there for completeness or in the event your network is locked down super tight.

Forwarding port 80 and 443 will break web browsing on every other device. The way port forwarding works is that a signal comes in from the internet to your IP address sent to port 1935. Your router looks at it and says "Hmm, 1935, ahh this is for the PS4. Let me send it along it's way." If you forward 80 and 443 all web traffic will be forwarded to the PS4 only. You should never have to forward those two ports.

I don't think it's anything to do with the router.

It's something to do with the modem. If he's on DSL and has a router modem hybrid thing that doesn't have multiple ports and uses a router for the modem-router->router, he's double-NAT'd. I haven't found an answer for that problem personally, outside of trying to "bridge mode" the modem-router into just being a modem. Even then, my ports wouldn't forward so I just threw my hands up and accepted my NAT-3.

I got nat 3 when I moved to a new apartment and changed isp. I had to call customer support and ask them to send public ips to my specific router, otherwise they'd use their own additional firewall. That fixed my problem and I'm at nat 2 again.
