Help me choose a new phone Gaf.

I've had the same LG V10 for about 4 years now, gone through a battery change, but now the headphone jack is degrading, the screen is ghosting, and I fucking hate Google. I need a new phone but....

1. I drive a truck for a living, and rely on my phone for audio entertainment. 3.5mm connectivity is a must above all else. If Apple users can relate their experiences with dongles which also allow them to charge the phone at the same time I'd appreciate it.

2. I had an IPhone 4 back in the day, but I prefer the ability to replace the battery without 2010 era Apple fuckery. Does Apple still charge exhorbitant prices to replace the battery on their phones for the crime of not upgrading?

3. Do modern IPhones still force updates that render phones unusable? My IPhone got unusablely slow when the bastards pushed an IOS update on me that might as well have bricked it. If I buy a phone I expect to use it for half a decade.

4. I'm used to just throwing a minimum 128 gig card in my phone for impulse-buy money. How bad does Ape still charge for their non-expandable memory?

I think Google is of the devil, and I am willing to spend $200 on a subsidised phone, but I need to hear that my prior issues with Apple are dealt with. I make good money, but not $1000 phone money. I'll also buy another Android if I must, though Google might as well be a owned subsidiary of the CCP.

Trucker? Can you get a new stereo system with BT support? If not what is your opinion on Motorola phones?

They have an audio jack
Turbocharge + USB C
They have phones that are 300 bucks and below with good stats
24 hour battery
expandable memory
You can use it with most carriers
The G7 is only 300 bucks
BUT it is a fucking android

Apple phones are 200 bucks? How old would those be?

My truck stereo has BT functionality, but my company (JB Hunt) is insane about drivers not using headsets while driving. We all have our headsets anyway, but even a provable (and subpoenable) connection between phone and equipment can be used against us. Plus an aux connection is better sound quality.

Also that $200 phone bit is the 2 year subsidised price. I know that no contemporary Apple product is $200.

Buying a smartphone is a losing game. You either have google turn you into bacon for the ad industry or you get the Apple shaft up your rectum.

With that in mind, I usually prefer and recommend Android because you have more options and you can easily save 400 bucks for what's essentially the same functionality although I'll admit that iPhones are pretty as fuck and I'm a sucker for the iPhone consistent design and experience.

True! However I like to change songs with my steering wheel!

I know someone with a newer Motorola phone, and they can change songs by holding down the volume button while the screen is off. Or you can just get a Fitbit and change songs on your wrist. If you're smart, you won't even take your eyes off the road. You can pretty much do everything by touch.

That's more for the OP, though. It sounds like you have things set up how you like them already.

I was involved in an accident a few years ago where I was proven 'not at fault' do to my company's lawyers subpoenaing the phone records of the dumb-ass who hit me. It proved that she was texting while she damn-near killed herself smashing into my drive axel at 40mph while I was backing into a customer.

They suboenaed my phone records too, and if I was proven to have an active BT connection at the time I'd have lost my job.

Apple phones are overpriced so you'll have to stick with cheaper Android devices. Where do you live? That'll help provide you with some regional choices.

Also what are the 3 things you are looking for in your future smartphone?

Re: iPhones, the dongles to gain a 3.5mm jack work fine generally. You can use a breakout dongle that gives you a lightning charging port as well as the 3.5mm.

As far as changing batteries goes, you can do it under warranty at no extra cost with Applecare+ ($199) within two years. Outside of warranty it's $69 for the X and newer.

iOS updates are pretty good these days, and you can keep your iPhone up to date on iOS versions for several years now without it chugging.

I would probably recommend an iPhone X, have one myself and it's pretty good. Certainly a better overall experience than any Android phone I had prior. But it's not perfect either. Typically for Apple, you have a more aggressive vendor lock-in. But at least shit works, even from a developer point of view. With regards to the audio jack: You'll get a 3.5mm to Lightning port dongle. So you can't charge the phone unless you get some sort of multi-dongle or you use NFC charging, while listening to music via headphones (Or you could get those wireless ear pods? But I wouldn't recommend them)

Also, Safari tends to have a lot better optimization towards battery usage than the travesty that is Google Chrome (both on phones and laptops) but ad-blocking requires third-party apps (or straight up rooting your phone) That being said, if you need more direct access to your phone and like to install some linux on it etc., than I would probably go with an Android phone, overall tooling for that is less complex.

For updates, I would recommend the following policy for any hardware and software: Don't update to X.0 versions, always wait for X.Y, with Y > 0 versions. Major version increments are usually more buggy than minor increments because the general philosophy is "ship features first, patch them later" because the reality of the market is that new features (regardless of how stable they are) always trump stability in marketing/PR (was a bit different back then, when you couldn't just patch software via the internet).

Lastly, and probably most importantly, if Apple stuff is too expensive, go for an Android phone, obviously. But I wouldn't recommend Google's own Pixel phones. From what I have seen and tested, they have below average build quality.

Help me understand the texting issue. One can use Google/Siri to play back texts or to dictate them and send. Is that illegal to do while driving? The more common approach where you see someone’s car weaving because they are looking down at their phone and typing is definitely distracted driving and illegal.

How would one prove you had an active BT connection? Is there some sort of internal phone log data?

I'm sure it's just me being paranoid, but sometimes they really are out to get you. I'd just prefer that my phone and stereo never interact in a provable way when working for a company in which it's prohibited, hence the aux cable.

I can't reccomend galaxy phones enough but I see you have a strong stance against them. I'll not badger or try to change your mind, but IF you ever for some reason switch to android i reccomend galaxy everytime. My wife and I both had a s3, s6, s8 and s10 and never had an issue of any kind.

I can't comment on your apple concerns though as I never owned one.

Just don't get an iPhone. I know they look pretty or whatever but don't buy one.
Maybe consider a Huawei if you're not paranoid about the Chinese recording your porn history.

In that case, get an iPhone 11 Pro. The XDR Retina screen won an award from a prestigious display rating website, and the cameras are the best around and brought some serious competition to the phone space.

I'm willing to go back to Apple, but I'm not enough of a mark to shell out the cash for their newest toy. I'm perfectly happy with 'good enough'.

Also, what model of IPhone should I look for in a new phone if all I need is podcasting, audible, music, and internet browsing? I won't use virtually any of the bells and whistles of the $1000 phones.

What is your current budget in USD?

If you have google run a phone with lineage os

You can turn off all google play services but it breaks your phone

I’d get an iPhone SE or iPhone 6 if you want a headphone jack.

I'd be willing to spend $200 on a 2 year subsidised plan from Verizon (another company I'm not fond of).

I'm an old man yelling at clouds in a 34 year old's body. How do I remove myself from Google while still using an Android?

Because I desperately prefer Android.

Pixel 4 comes out soon - maybe wait for that and get the latest tech?

Google may be the Devil but Apple is definitely a dirty Succubus as well. All of these tech companies are 'evil'. Plus Terminators are cool so support Google in their endeavours!

Of course, all corporations are evil, but Apple is the lesser of the two evils.

O rly?
Please tell me more.

Last I saw they were utilising Chinese sweatshop labour (that regularly commited suicide at 'work') and avoid corporation tax and are therefore directly responsible for the homeless people defecating on the streets of San Fran :messenger_savoring:

All corporations do that, and it's inexcusable. But I hate all corporations equally.

Apple keeps your data for themselves and their products.

Google is an add agency that sells it to literally anyone.

both are evil and do business with government.

Oh ok. I wouldn’t advice it then.
It will cause the phone to be nearly broken if you disable y google play site and google services sweet.

One+6T or the 7 with it's pop up front camera that way you have a whole screen over a notch. High quality high end phones for half the price of Samsung/apple do not buy Apple they will update your phone to its death also the camera on the new one is literally a 'what the shit is this'

I don't know what you use your phone for exactly, but how about one of those new Nokia phones? They run KaiOS, so no google or Apple, have basic functions and apps, they have the headphone jack. Might be something to look into if you're not a heavy user.

Verizon has stopped selling subsidized phones - you can either pay full price up front or split the payments over two years.

For what you’ve described, I would recommend getting an iPhone 8. It’s not the latest and greatest but has a good screen, strong battery, will be supported for at least 3 more years through iOS updates and will only cost $449 ($50 more to double the memory from 64 to 128 GB).

I'm probably going to go with an older IPhone. Not particularly happy about it, but my current phone is on its last legs, and I really want to cut Google out of my life as much as possible.

As much as I use my phone it’s never a question to get exactly what I want. I don’t even consider price because I look at it as a monthly expense just like the bill.

To me having used Galaxys, Nexus and iPhone devices, iPhone offers a better experience particularly if your social circle is using them, which in all likelihood they are. Watch Flossy Carter on YouTube, he will give you the skinny on any phone you are considering. On Android I think One+ is offering the best value and quality.

Pixel 4 will not really be the latest tech though. It's hardware will be pretty dated won't it?

I've never actually owned a Pixel but I read that Pixel 3 had the best phone camera at the time of release and Pixel 4 is rumoured to be a $1000+ phone so I imagine the tech will be impressive.

OnePlus 6 is a gem. I'd recommend it if you're intersted in a solid Android. About 500 bucks. Great battery life, comes with a huge Dash charger for super quick charging. Awesome camera, great colors, beats the iPhone 7 easy. Aux for headphones. If you like customizing the displays, apps, folders, etc it does it all.

IPhone 8 if price is an issue (no major company does the $200 subsidy price anymore, that went away years ago) or a X/11 If you can swing the price. You’ll have a phone that works perfectly, always supported update wise, Siri works great for dictating text and responding to people hands free. You want something nice that will work, last and get support for years to come. Stick with the known quantity.

another plus: the sound canceling software in the iPhone is some of the best I’ve seen for making calls when you can’t use a headset and hava to rely on the phones speaker phone mode. We have to do it all the time when on the road doing shoots, the iPhone kills the galaxy in that specific use case.

Iphone 8 is a good phone but I love my X because of FaceID. It's so much easier to unlock the phone than using your finger.

Apple doesn't sell the X anymore, and I'm not sure you can still get it from Verizon (OP's carrier). You can get an XR for $599 which would get you some upgrades over the 8, but OP would have to determine if that's worth the extra cost.
