Help me decide GAF: Destiny vs Halo

So let me explain my situation first. I'm off traveling across several countrys right now for my business (organizing freerunning exhibitions) and have little time for gaming at the moment in any meaningful way. It will be like this till the end of October which is why this is even a thing for me.

whynotboth.gif totally applies here and I agree with it. I am most likely going to have both eventually, the price will be the same for both for me and buying both isn't an issue. What is really limited right now for me is time.

The way I like to game is pretty intense. I love space operas and when I get into one, I usually like to focus on it for a period of time both for pve and pvp. I was a huge Halo fan, 100%'d 1 and 2 on Legendary and played the hell out of 3 and 4 as well. I lived the pvp in all of them, the gameplay and setting were everything I loved, I also had a pretty good group of friends that played all of them regularly which really helped my enjoyment. However, that was quite some time ago now and a lot of those memories are kind of a distant past.

Destiny was the first game I played that gave me that rush again. I felt despite some of the flaws in the story telling, the core game was so tight, so epic in scale and looked so good in a setting I loved, I couldn't stop playing, I probably spent several hundred hours in vanilla pre-dlc Destiny, collected almost every exotic, maxed most of them out, Gally was my first exotic drop actually I didn't realize at the time what I had haha. And I'll be honest, after the first DLC I was a little burned on how little it provided so I dabbled in it a bit but my interest after that died off. I haven't picked it up for some time now and skipped the second DLC pack entirely.

But now TTK is here. Everything I'm hearing from reviews, gamers, and here on GAF drives my hype just a bit higher as everything I felt critical about seems to be fixed (in game lfg would be nice but I digress) to be honest, I would probably start fresh in the game, and spend a Massive amount of time doing everything I missed along with all the new stuff. It's an MMO version of Halo to me for heavens sake, and it seems to be in a complete state finally.

On the other hand, Halo 5 will be here. Halo 5. My hype for this had been building for years, and the more I hear the more It grows. I was a little hesitant about the mobility changes, boosters, dashes what not, the ADS being added to the game. Definitely bummed about the local coop being removed from this iteration (local coop halo was a staple for me) But reviews have been high about the multiplayer at least, and the new trailers look so good. The fact that all maps will be available to all players is huge to me. I wish all games did that and the new war zones look amazing! If I choose this path, I'll likely get MCC (which I skipped due to being broken) and play through all the campaigns again, and then dive headfirst into 5 to complete the cycle and stay for the multiplayer.

So my dilemma. Time is now an issue for me more than it ever has been. During my down times at the end of October I will need to choose one of these to soak my brain in for the foreseeable near future. Both will likely do the job well. But I am limiting myself to just one for now due to my time constraints.

Help me decide guys.

Destiny.

As someone who actually did enjoy most elements of its first year, The Taken King has lopped it on its side and made it into an even better game (for me) and fixed most of year one's problems.

The way I see it, go Halo if you prefer PvP (I find Halo pvp >>> Destiny pvp), and Destiny if you prefer PvE/cooperative content.

If you're constantly traveling I'd say go with Halo unless you know you'll have a good and stable internet connection, then sounds like Destiny is more up your alley

Destiny will probably suck you in to the minutiae of raids, loot drops, leveling, etc.

I personally do not enjoy that style of play. Having played the Halo 5 beta, I can say its the most fun Halo has been for me, ever.

Halo 5, especially if you've loved the franchise before. I'm of the opinion that this might be the best Halo game since Combat Evolved, and I've been playing since day one with too many hours played to count lol.

If your passion for Halo is strong, I don't think you can miss Halo 5.

Gotta be Destiny, TTK is top tier and there is content for miles. I keep getting more quests to do and so many branching paths to follow up.

It's just brilliant.

Having played Destiny's H2H MP and a fan of Halos H2H MP will say that most def Halos is by far more enjoyable. Esp with the fact that you are not having to deal with the broken flavor of the month weapon constantly. Asides other things.

But if its not for the H2H and you have friends to play with Id suggest Destiny.

I was promised Halo for PC by the lords of gaming, but Phil Spencer has denied me like Australia denies refugees.

Me and my PC am cry salty tears forever...

Would love to play me some Halo, specifically all the games I missed that did not make it to PC to see how the game progressed over the years, but as I only have a PS4 and PC I don't have such an opportunity unfortunately.

The Halo 5 beta alone makes me say pick Halo.

Especially with time being an issue, because it seems Destiny is only good for the endgame grinding, and that's time consuming.

Go Halo

I'll take Bungie over 343i any day. No disrespect or anything of course. You can say all this shit about the lack of story and everything in Destiny but the game plays very well and it has legs.

Halo blows Destiny out of the water, IMO, of course.

Practically speaking, like some have mentioned, if you're going to be on the road a lot Destiny is going to present some issues due to inconsistent scheduling and suspect internet.

Frankly, though, with H5's campaign looking like it's gonna be pretty great, and H5's multi beta selling it to me as best-in-series, I'd recommend Halo even if you had regular circumstances.

Halo by a mile.

I thought Destiny was one of the worst games I played in 2014 though, so take my opinion with a grain of salt.

Halo. Has an actual story and the multiplayer is much better. Hell even Halo 4 had better multiplayer than Destiny.

Warzone in Halo 5 will scratch the PvE itch too.

I would wait till Halo 5 is closer before making a desicion.
But since you seem to be busy most of time. I would choose Halo which would be a much easier game to play in short bursts.

Halo 5 by a long shot. It's shaping up to be something great.

I haven't played TTK, nor do I intend to because the base game is awful. Bungie fell off hard.

I really wouldn't ask gaf to pick between these two. The answers just come down to what people prefer, which is not necessarily what you'll like as well.

I would just highly recommend waiting till halo 5 reviews to decide for yourself.

You don't wanna go all in on destiny then find out halo is great, or wait on halo and it might suck. Destiny could also be a lot less intriguing in a month as well, so there's that.

Like I said, wait for reviews, decide then.

I can't really give you a good answer since I am currently in the honeymoon phase of destiny content that finally feels meaningful and I have only played the halo 5 beta thus far. Please try again around black Friday.

There will be Halo 5 previews hitting next week and the reviews will probably hit a week before launch. If you're trying to decide now, you'd be better waiting.

As for my opinion, Halo 5 all the way. Everything about it screams 343 knows what they did wrong with 4 and are coming back with something incredible.

Halo 5 isn't out yet and TTK is by no means perfect but it is the best that Destiny has been and it's been a pleasant surprise for a very critical year one player who was sick to death of that game. Plus the 6 player raids are unlike anything else out there

I'd wait to see how Halo 5 launches. If it launches problem free, go with Halo 5. Destiny still has legitimate matchmaking issues in terms of skill matching and keeping laggy players out, and TTK patch doesn't fix the inherent issues the core game has. House of Wolves/Dark Below more or less fill in the gaps that Destiny launched with, but ultimately you're still paying for an *incredibly* solid shooter that can seem very thin at times.

Remember that Metal Gear Solid V launched with large promises in terms of narrative, and ultimately delivered on very little. Yet, people do defend it, some even feeling that it's the best of the Metal Gear games. Halo: Master Chief Collection launched in a literally unplayable state, and still to this day has issues in campaign and MP. People continue to defend that as well, saying "it's worked fine for me since day 1."

So yes, there will be people that defend Destiny vehemently, and they'll be people that legitimately love the game. But talk to people that hate it as well to get a more complete picture of the state of things.

If there's one thing I've learned about GAF it's that everyone always keeps these types of OP disclaimers in mind when posting.

Anybody who played the H5 beta will tell you to go with that. Destiny is a fun time with friends but it's also a repetitive grinding borefest. It got to the stage with Destiny one day where I literally snapped out of it and thought ''what the fuck am I doing wasting time on this nonsense''?

Traded it in the next day.

Destiny hands down, if you're looking for content, you have to go with the game that will constantly adds to it and is always evolving, halo is kind of just halo, it's the safe game to pick up if you're into that type of thing. But with the taken king, even after you beat the story there is just an over whelming amount of things you can do with out even touching the raid or nightfall

Yeah, not like that at all anymore, but I hear ya, halo does allow you to not grind and just micro transaction yourself some guns for war zone (depending if you're even good enough to achieve the rank necessary to use the guns / items you purchased)

Halo seems like it is more drop in drop out than Destiny

So for travelling I would go with that, Destiny looks like it demands a lot of time that you might not have.

Of course Halo 5 will likely demand a lot of time as well, just probably less than Destiny.

Halo 5, but I'm biased, cause Halo 5 multi is actually good.

but seriously, if you're looking for a game to play with friends, either is a fine choice. If you want competitive, Halo by a long shot.

I prefer Destiny but I'd say Halo in your case, OP. Play the story, play some multiplayer, play the story again on and then sell it. Buy Destiny. FIN

I have to pick Halo.

Destiny I found enjoyable up until I got to about lvl 29. For me this was the point where the next thing was Nightfalls + Raids. For me it was too much hassle trying to get into them. There is no matchmaking so be prepared to spend time searching/waiting/inviting players to play these modes. I just couldn't be bothered with it especially with how much of a grind the game is.

I'm about 3/4 into the first Halo game and enjoying it. I haven't played online yet but from what I understand it's more like say Call of Duty/Battlefield where you pick a mode then get put straight into a team. Destiny is more of an MMO than a game with a separate single/multiplayer games.

You can't wait for halo 5 reviews to make a decision?
I understand this sentiment and it's completely fair. I personally however tend to trust your opinions here far more than the hype train reviews from the general media. They could all give it 10s and I might still hate it, or more likely they may give it 6's across the board and it might be the GOAT for me. Had similar experiences with Heavenly Sword and Wonderful 101 for instance.

I lost some respect for the review and critic outlets in general over the past few years. So now, I tend to skip them entirely. That's a whole other story though.

The beta alone was better than Destiny MP. It depends what you want from a game. Do you enjoy PvP multiplayer the most? Get Halo. If you want to focus on both PvE and PvP equally Destiny is probably more satisfying.

I'd go with Halo but like you said whynotboth applies. This fall with be the first time in my life I play 2 FPS games heavily.

I think Halo 5 will be the greatest of all time personally. If that's true wouldn't it be crazy if it was GoTY?
