Help me, GAF: was told that using a wired 360 controller on PC is "harmful."

Simple way to tell him he's wrong:

Windows is made by Microsoft.

XBOX is made by Microsoft.

XBOX support is built directly into Windows by Microsoft.

Ask him to call up Microsoft customer support to confirm these three truths.

If he refuses, he's the one who fucked up the computer, he's a lying sham of a father, and you should never trust him ever again, possibly to the point of considering cutting all ties.

Best and only acceptable answer in this thread.

Is it possible you had that horrifically adware-infested version of MotionJoy running?

Because if so, he was right.

But anyway, you should check this too, OP.

I have read of problems with the wireless Xbox receiver needing much power that a normal usb port can't provide, and thus, can damage the port / MB, but never with the wired controller. Personally, I have never had issues with the wireless receiver.

Never an issue here. x360 controller on my PC 4LYFE!

In all seriousness - I love my 360 wired controller when I use it on my PC for action games, etc - never an issue. You'd have to pry that sucker from my cold dead hands for me to get rid of it.

You are having issues because of the various forms of malware and registry errors on your family computer.

There are many ways to fix this problem. The easiest way? reformat.

Its pretty simple.

1. Grab all of the files you want to keep.

2. Download your drivers and programs you want to install after you reformat.

3. Grab windows iso. Here is home premium 64 bit from Microsoft's DD site: http://msft.digitalrivercontent.net/win/X17-58997.iso

4. Grab your windows key.

5. Put iso on a bootable usb, need to use this tool http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msstore/html/pbPage.Help_Win7_usbdvd_dwnTool

6. reboot your computer, boot from usb, choose custom install, reformat your drive, install windows 7.

Finished.

Anything Vista and above has no problem just plugging in a 360 controller and using it.

Your dad sounds like an idiot. This isn't even like old people bitching about how installing something makes a computer run slower, its plugging a Microsoft product into another Microsoft product and saying its making the computer have problems.

Yup, the day I got my own computer was a glorious one. Funny how I never had trouble with my PC, yet my parents continued to have trouble with theirs.
Weird that.

My mom always blamed my games back in the day while she would click on every link that she sees when she googles something. Got my own computer. Never brakes down. Her computer brakes down after a few months.

It was glorious.

Yep. The worst thing in the world is having to share a computer with someone who THINKS they know what the hell they're talking about when it comes to computers.

My dad used to accuse me of getting viruses from places like GameFAQs and Nintendo.com whenever his computer got spyware. Of course this was back when we were using Windows ME and had Kazaa running all the time. He still thinks something I download on my computer can fuck up his when we're on the same network.

I used to get demos with PC Gamer and my dad would be SO AGAINST trying to run them.

I remember my brother and I having to wait until he left the house to try out the Tomb Raider demo because he was sure sketchy software like that was going to end it.

We also had to shut the computer off every night, never use the physical button to open the disc tray, and put these weird plastic sheets over the computer while it wasn't running.

On the bright side, it must have been awesome to have the Spruce Goose in your garage.

I used to have the USB connector a little twisted, if I used it on my laptop it would go full on fan mode, but I can't imagine a normal wired 260 controller doing anything

Reasons like this is why I'm glad my dad played games as I was growing up to. I never had to deal with the nonsense of stuff like this with old PC games and the like.

My mom played old PC games as I was growing up, so same here in that regard.

'Course, now it's different; whenever my bro goes downstairs and does something to it, like fill up the hard drive with a ton of crap or gets some viruses, it's all my fault for going to... a few gaming sites and Youtube. Alternatively, I download a 15 mb program and it's what filled up the entire hard drive.

Then she deletes the shortcut and believes that's the same as deleting the entire program. Oh, mom... ;)

Hooray for having my own comp! The screen is a dust magnet, though.

@TC: As already said, if the technician did indeed lie to your father like that then you are now doomed to Stubborn Parent Hell. Enjoy!

Also did the guy say something like this afterwards:

"As you see I identified this problem, you should buy this anti virus, it is $300 and expensive but will protect your computer from this virus"?

lol.

While I imagine it's POSSIBLE to an extent with third party drivers (just look at how MotioninJoy can take out your bluetooth) the 360's officially supported by Microsoft and others, built right into later OSes. I can't see how it could possibly be harmful unless you fucked up the USB port, and that's something else entirely.

Don't know if its been said, but the guy was most likely referring to a program like, or specifically, Motionjoy or whatever. People were reporting that it was akin to a virus.

Simpy using your wired 360 controller with your PC with official drivers from disc installed is safe (and Windows 8 instantly recognizes it without installation too). Relying on dodgy third party software to run it is not.

Haha parents have been pulling this for so long. Anytime there is a PC issue: "It must be that new game you installed, it messed up the computer."

Yep I was hearing this when I was a kid too. Its always the kids fault, meanwhile the generation now is Eons beyond what their parents can do. Nuts.

360 controller is made to work with Windows, in fact its supported and has Microsoft drivers.

Here's the solution, just hide the application title under all programs. Right click and delete. Wont delete program, but parents wont see it
