if OP can't get into Maiden because of the vocals, then good luck getting into any decent metal that doesn't involve gruff/growling vocals.
He already mentioned Maiden...lol

i hate metal
i like sabbath
but that shit is awesome
thanks man
No problem, my friend was super high once and he looked at me and said "What the world needs most man is more Black Mountain listeners"

Scar Symmetry- Morphogenesis

Times of Grace- Strength in Numbers

Paradise Lost- Frailty

Between The Buried And Me- Obfuscation

Meshuggah- Bleed

Motorhead
Megadeth

I pretty much started with the same music taste as you a couple years ago. Look for bands that influenced/are influenced by the bands you currently like. For example, look at what artists Metallica covered (Garage Inc) or what bands Sabbath or AC/DC toured with

Why not just checkout one of the Sabbath clones/stoner rock bands - Sabbath would be considered stoner rock today

1. Black Mountain

Holy crap, these guys got pretty good. Saw them years ago when they opened for a semi-big band (for the area) from around here and they fucking sucked! (Well, live anyway, their first recordings were OK) They've really gotten along well.. did a good job with the sound that they had.

Pretty sure you're looking for Clutch.

Don't listen to this man, purchased an album based on a friends recommendation (he knows full well what my tastes in music are) and while good music, it is almost certainly not what you are looking for.

The song "Electric Worry" is an instant classic but outside of that, it's an acquired taste at best.

<--Huge Black Sabbath fan! I believe you will like those bands/albums because they kind of belong to the same family in one way or another. They are different but all of them at least owe something to bluesrock:

Led Zeppelin Immigrant Song from the third one (The first 4 albums especially)

Cathedral (first 4 albums + EPs, especially Ethereal Mirror) In my opinion the band that really "got" the Sabbath sound without copying them. They have their very own flair. Tony Iommi even played a solo on one of their albums!

Motörhead - Ace of Spades album...It really is a great and consistent album!

Cream - THE blues rock band

Mountain - Very nice early 70s heavy rock!

Hmm well let's see what others haven't suggested, for Blues rock you'll be wanting....

Gary Moore
Clapton
BB King
Stevie Ray Vaughn
Joe Walsh

These are just a few. You'll eventually come across more yourself once you start listening.

Most decent stuff that does not involve growling is mentioned.

Take it slow, and listen to the bands you like from the recommendations, and don't feel pressured to listen to growling metal bands.

However, if you want music with alot of energy, you can try hardcore/post-hardcore music.

At the Drive-In is a fun place to start.

As someone else mentioned, you sound like a hard rock fan rather than metal.

Tuning in to a classic rock radio station and seeing what you like is probably a good first step.

Couple of recommendations:

The Scream
Hardline

Motörhead, Iron Maiden, Mötley Crüe, W.A.S.P, Helloween before Kiske left and they turned to shitty Derisween, Megadeth and the first four Danzig albums.

Then why would you list Slayer?

Never liked Slayer. A few of their more melodious songs are ok, South of Heaven etc. but I just don't get this band.

My bother is an accomplished guitar player and holds them in high esteem. King's technically accomplished but it just doesn't sound good. Just like someone jacked up on drugs going crazy.
And their concerts have the reputation of being retard fests. I remember when I was kid, people would brag about coming home from Slayer shows and showing off all their mosh pit injuries.

Mercyful Fate's first album "Melissa" is good and hasn't been recommended. I like the throw back classical music mixed in with the shredding.

love this band love this band love this band.

only band of this style that i enjoy. they are just a nice balance of things.

example (listen to this song beginning to end to get what i mean its 19 minutes long so its split into 2 parts because youtube won't allow standard accounts to post this long of songs/videos):

swim to the moon part 1 (intense half/lots of growly vocals):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d_6Dybf024A

swim to the moon part 2 (softer half/pretty singing vocals):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2GiPU-ab5gY&feature=related

OP trust me. start the second half 35 seconds in, and just sit back!

Yep my favorite band in the world for the past few years. The shit these guys can blend together is surreal, and they do it so well. Incredibly creative band. Colors album is my bible of music.

While a fan of all of these bands aside from Danzig, the dude said he isn't into Power Metal, so if he listened to Helloween his head may explode. Or, he may realize the errors of his ways.

Also, I'm gonna just come out and say it that I prefer Helloween with Deris. The Keeper albums are legendary, no doubt, but they have released at least 5 or so fantastic albums with Deris, and they continue to evolve and never play it safe, while still keeping the quality up.

Time of the Oath, Better than Raw, The Dark Ride, Keeper: The Legacy, and Gambling with the Devil are all fucking awesome.

Oh, and as for the OP, you may want to check out Cathedral, and for the love of god give the Dio-era of Sabbath a shot, Heaven and Hell in particular.

Clutch, though not metal they are a hard rock/blues/stoner band that is awesome
They're very southern, If you're in to that. (I've seen them several times)

For Blues Rock, I'd say check out the Black Keys.

Go buy Megadeth - Rust in Peace right fucking now. If you like heavy metal or thrash music at all, that is essential listening. I actually put it up there with the best of Metallica's albums. Just fucking awesome.

Rust in Peace should have a national holiday.

Same here. Alaska has some good stuff but Colors(live) hasn't left my car cd player in 6 months. The Great Misdirect is an amazing ride. I cannot wait for the next album!

And how could he not? Which reminds me about mentioning Gamma Ray and Stratovarius.

Really? I admit, I just can't get over his voice, but that alone kind of ruines current Helloween for me. Admittedly on the Dark Ride and some songs of the oder albums he is on I do enjoy, but that's despite him and I would prefer them with a different singer.

But then again Helloween had to die for Pink Cream 69 to rise to greatness I guess.

And another suggestion, that might suit the OP: Europe in its second incarnation. While I will forever prefer their glorious 80s selves, they still do make great music.

Also it can't hurt to give a listen to White Snake's Live... in the Shadow of the Blues recording.

Good sir, it would appear we have similar tastes.

I get you on the Helloween thing, if a singer just rubs you the wrong way there's not much you can do about it.

And speaking of PC69, I was just listening to their Self Titled album today at work. Take those tears from your eyyyyyeeeessss... THEY TASTE LIKE LIES.

I haven't heard any of their newer stuff, any suggestions?

Check out Lamb of God and Megadeth - Rust in Peace.

You're going to need something powerful to launch you into the realm of metal.
I would suggest Testament - More Than Meets the Eye

It was voted the #1 metal song of 2010 by me. The riffage and vocals are more powerful than a bullet train filled with vikings.

You know it's kind of a pet peeve of mine when people create threads like these and cease to dialogue with the people within them.

Time of the Oath, Master of the Rings and Better than Raw are admittedly pretty good (especially Better than Raw), but The Dark Ride, Keeper III and Rabbit Don't Come Easy are all awful IMO (haven't heard Gambling..). But the worst shitstains on their career is that holy shit fuckawful covers album they made, Metal Jukebox. And the recent album with acoustic re-recordings of their old stuff was pretty damn bad too x_x
Gamma Ray > Helloween with Deris

Luckily I only have that with Derris and to a smaller extent with Tobias Sammet.

Well, if we're talking about anything with David Readman, I'd basically have to recommend three fll albums:
Sonic Dynamite, Endangered and Thunderdome.
For individual songs my winamp ratings suggest that I'm partial to "King of my World" and "Face of an Angel". And to suggest something from their latest, (and I hope it still is their most current release, I'm kinda out of the loop lately) In10sity: "Crossfire".

Baroness can not be mentioned enough, their Blue Record is a masterpiece, just absolutely amazing.

An example of their greatness.

And then if you like that check out Mastodon and Black Tusk, similar kinda sludge bands. And you'd probably like the Sword too. The person that said Megadeth's Rust in Peace is right too, greatest metal album ever.

The Melvins.

They are so awesome, and have done nearly everything within the rock realm. From Kiss inspired solo albums to hardcore punk to grunge to experimental metal to avant-garde...

Their new album, The Bride Screamed Murder is my favorite from them since Stoner Witch, highly recommended.
